First of all, teens are not aware of all the information that is being targeted towards on the internet so they are easily manipulated by it. In source C, Mizuko Ito states “In both friendship-driven and interest-driven online activity, youth create and navigate new forms of expression and rules for social behaviour. In the process, young people acquire various forms of technical and media literacy by exploring new interests, tinkering, and ‘messing around’ with new forms of media.” (Ito, Source C). Mizuko emphasizes that the youth are constantly bombarded by the media on the internet. This can result in constant manipulation and impact their ability to make unbiased decisions. At last, media is taking away the formal classroom setting where students were disciplined. Mizuko states “New media allow for a degree of freedom and autonomy for youth that is less apparent in a classroom setting.” (Source D). Students today have gained too much freedom which is resulting in lack of discipline. Also, schools are allowing students to browse the web as they please which leads them into believing they have the right to do anything on the internet. In conclusion, students are constantly manipulated by the media and they are given too much freedom which results in their lack of discipline in the classroom and it is making them
The 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet is more tightly; aligned to what Shakespeare intended in consideration of the setting, Juliet’s impression, and verbal exchanges. When analyzing each film, it is clear to see the same plot, just portrayed differently. To begin, the settings of both films took place at the Capulet’s home where Romeo came to meet Juliet. While the 1968 film took more of an authentic path, the 1996 film took an modern path. In the 1996 film, the main setting was the pool, which strays from the play because it is the balcony scene.
The internet makes people to be more dependency. It makes people to observe more information, and to be tended to find information. People relay more in finding information in the internet today. Furthermore, people are physically involved as they try to think and find information from the internet. The internet may have small effect on people, but still it helps people.
According to By Rainie and Hitlin (2005), “there is agreement among teens and their parents about the role that the internet plays in teens’ education. Eighty-six percent of teens, and 88% of online teens, believe that the internet helps teenagers to do better in school. Eighty percent of parents and 83% of parents of online teens agreed with that proposition”. Wright (n.d) shares that “the Internet contains a wealth of knowledge that is available instantly upon any search. Because of this, the Internet has superseded libraries as a source for information gathering and research. Many teachers will now ask students to visit specific websites to study from home, and online encyclopedias provide masses of knowledge on almost every topic imaginable. The variety of sources allows students to pursue subjects in much greater detail rather than being limited to whatever the teacher sends home”.
Children are motivated to learn and conform to the broader cultural and social norms that will help them function in society. In order to gauge these community norms, children have to gather information from a broad range of sources – not just their own families (Aboud 2008).
1. How can an understanding of the complexities of culture help us make sense of the day-to-day world which we live? Give an example from your life to illustrate your answer.
On this basis, we have to be careful about the children’s education. Lots of students find literature boring and waste of time nowadays. So, we have to make them realize that literature does not only consist of stories written about imaginary people, but it represents ideas that are revolutionary and fascinating for their future life; however, that will not happen without taking responsibility. Therefore, parents and teachers have to undertake this task because that a generation takes the shape of the society it belongs. For instance, they will not feel strange if their parents do not discuss different ideas about a situation. That’s why; parents and teachers should keep children away from the idiot box, and should pay attention to their education. Not only from the perspective of literature but also relating what they learn from books with real life. Being aware of that technology is being used to establish conformity in society, that is, simply accepting the tenets of the majority, we have to try to change the rules of the
In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne shows that God’s mercy and forgiveness can save even those who have been corrupted by sin. It is shown through Dimmesdale that sin leads to more sin and hidden sin torments the person. Hawthorne shows that true repentance only comes from following your conscience. Because he did not admit his crime, Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale was tormented by his sin. Hawthorne addresses through Dimmesdale the subjects of sin, repentance, redemption, and forgiveness.
A child’s culture is a major part of their identity and their sense of being, belonging, and becoming. Respecting their culture is important for building a relationship with the child and his/her family.
Clifford is stating that our beliefs are not only our responsibility or molded by ourselves, because we are affected by our surroundings. Our culture and society has created the important beliefs for people to follow. Clifford believes that our beliefs and values are passed down from our parent to our kids. These beliefs that are passed down to our children, and many times they are unchanged so they could be false beliefs. In other words many of the kids learn all their parents’ traits, the good and the bad, and unless they learn to question these beliefs, they will pass those same beliefs to the next generations. This can be seen as a good burden and a bad one, in our children’s future. Clifford believed that we needed to question everything,
I listened to his conversation between my mom and my brother as I dragged my suitcase down the stairs. When I was dragging it I realized something. I realized that I was a Third Culture Kid. A Third Culture Kid is somebody who was raised outside of their parent’s culture for most of their life. I have moved more than 6 times in my life, and most of the times I moved to a different country. I think that being a Third Culture Kid has allowed me to learn more about myself and become a more accepting person.
“Social media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. Every time you post a photo, or update your status, you are contributing to your own digital footprint and personal brand”-Amy Jo Martin. Children have advanced and are now using the internet as a way to escape from the real world. They post pictures and videos of themselves and others with a belief that once it is deleted no one will remember it. Social media has taken over our lives as adults, so imagine what it is doing to our children. Parents should not allow their children to have an instagram or a Facebook account because of cyberbullying, over-sharing, and the media has a bad influence on the way children should view themselves.
Born to a Moroccan father and a French mother had a great impact on my upbringing. More so, being the child of a diplomat. It has definitively brought its shares of benefits and sometimes unexpected challenges and you can say that I am a Third Culture Kid (TCK). I have had the unique experience of being exposed to and living in cultures different from my home culture for long periods of time and that exposure has been found to have an impact on the level of authoritarianism that I am exhibiting. It has been brought to my attention that in my professional and personal life, I have a tendency to try to impose my opinion on others. Moving forward, I am seeing myself trying to change this perception that others have of me as being “too aggressive” (not in the physical sense), “too abusive” or “too direct” and even sometimes excessively curt or critical. In retrospect, I found myself many times thinking if something I had said or a reaction I had was uncalled for. I know that a change to a specific trait(s) in one’s personality cannot occur overnight, but admitting that I have flaws is a good precursor to change. My assessment survey also unraveled an interesting gap (negative) between how effective of a leader I think I am and what others think. I breathe a sigh of relief when seeing that at least I am being seen as a somewhat effective leader despite being too demanding and direct. Ultimately, my vision or the “big change” as I would like to call it, should start by
The BGC is a microcosm of children from various backgrounds. Regardless of background, however, children are always being influenced by the media and consumer culture found in their everyday lives. Interpretive Reproduction, through the context of the media, has a profound effect on how they interact with others. A sense of belonging is absent when one is not a part of the massive wave of media influence. The incredible diversity of media content fosters an environment for a vast breadth of complexity in how peer cultures are able to manifest. The main commonality I found present in my field notes is the influence of the internet on peer cultures. Children appropriate knowledge from the internet as a media source, and use this information as common ground to effectively interact with one another.
Social media is causing teenagers to be negatively influenced. This is an issue, because teenagers are extremely impressionable and social media is negatively impacting their lives each day whether they are conscious of this or not. One anonymous author who wrote the article, “Teen’s Use of Social Media: Positive or Negative?” states, “90 percent of teens have used social media” (Teens’ Use of Social Media). In this statement, it is clear that a large majority of teenagers have already been exposed to some type of social media. Since teenagers learn from direct observation and experience, it is a huge problem when they witness things on social media that concern sexist, racist, or homophobic content. Many teenagers even say that they have an addiction to social media. Teens who have had bad experiences online or who do not use social media on a regular basis said that they have a stronger urge to stay away from the internet. Even though there are many negatives to social media there are some positives as well. NickMcGillivray who is affiliated with the website, TurboFuture wrote the article, “What Are the Effects of Social Media on Youth.” In his article, he states, “There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming sites, and blogs” (McGillivray). In this statement, he makes it clear, that social media has both positives and negatives. One positive of social media that impacts teenager’s lives would be, how they are able to communicate with their teachers and other classmates at any time. This makes it easier for
