The Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma The Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma is a huge part of Oklahoma’s history. The name Kickapoo comes from “Kiwegapawa,” which is an Algonquin word meaning “he stands out” or “he stands about”. Known to be fiercely independent is the Kickapoo Tribe. The lifestyle of a Kickapoo often changed due to the various amounts of migration. The tribe was continuously traveling more south and more west. The Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma has created history from a long route to Oklahoma to where the tribe is currently. The history behind the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma is very interesting. The tribe originated in the Southern Great Lakes Region. The original population of the tribe was 4,000. The French estimated that there were 2,000 Kickapoos, in 1684. The Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma were originally from northwest Ohio and southern Michigan between lake Erie and lake Michigan. In 1658, the Kickapoos were forced into Southwest Michigan. The Kickapoos then moved south into northern Illinois, around the 1700’s. During the year 1770, the tribe moved into Central Illinois extending into the western border of Indiana. The tribe was relocated to southern Missouri in 1819 because of signed treaties from the war between the Americans and settlement of the Ohio Valley. Most of the tribe moved to Missouri, but many stayed in Illinois. If the Kickapoos did not leave Illinois, they were removed by the military in 1834. Several Kickapoo moved across Oklahoma and Texas to the Mexican border. Half of the Mexican Kickapoo were sent to Oklahoma between 1873 and
