 Introduction: What is human trafficking and slavery?
Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transfer and transportation of people. Controlling people by threats, fraud, abduction and deception and exploitation of others all go into the category of human trafficking. Forcing someone into slavery or slavery-like conditions is considered to be human trafficking.

Slavery refers to people who are treated like property of another person, company, household, government or corporation. Unfortunately, these victims find trafficking as a means to survive and to earn an income for their families. ‘The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’ has estimated that people from 136 different countries are trafficked into 118 countries. Around 800, 000 million men, women and children are trafficked and enslaved across international borders annually. Below is a global map of the areas affected by human trafficking.

From the map, countries where a very high number of people are being trafficked and enslaved, include Russia, Nigeria, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Moldova, Bulgaria, China and Thailand. Furthermore, the places where a high number of people are being trafficked and enslaved include Kazakhstan, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, Poland and Slovakia.

The map indicates that the United States is one of the most popular destinations for human trafficking. War and natural disasters are also other contributing factors to slavery and human trafficking. These occurrences may lead to massive displacements of populations, leaving orphans and families who are extremely vulnerable to trafficking.

 Forms of trafficking
There are many forms of trafficking. These include forced labour, domestic servitude, forced marriage, sex trafficking, child slavery, servile marriage and organ trafficking.

 Forced labour is when a person is made to work without voluntarily offering to provide labour or services. This form of trafficking usually occurs due to the trafficker’s use of force and threats. A person may voluntarily work in the first place, however, when they wish to stop and leave the area where they work, the employer prevents them from doing so. Some examples include South Asian and African boys being trafficked as camel jockeys, Chinese women being trafficked into garment factories and Eastern European women being trafficked into
