I chose the song “Praying” by Kesha for chapter twelve. In 2014, Kesha signed an exclusive contract with Dr. Luke. By 2014, Kesha began a lawsuit against Dr. Luke for having an unlawful contract. Dr. Luke's contract enabled him to control every aspect of her life. The lawsuit claimed that Dr. Luke verbally, physically, sexually, and emotionally abused her to the point where she almost lost her life. In 2017, after being freed from the contract, Kesha released “Praying” to express the impact Dr. Luke had on her. I am relating this song to the misuses of power and influence found in chapter twelve. Chapter twelve specifically contains information about sexual harassment and different types of bullying. Kesha’s song, “Praying,” expresses abuse
The subject matter/topic of the source is she expressed her feelings towards the haters, the past bad experience she had with people and told her audience listening to this song that she is going to ignore it and forget it in a way just “shake it off” which she repeats throughout the song. Direct quotations “I shake it off, I shake it off.. I shake it off, I shake it off” this is repetition which is used in most of this song, out of all the literary devices used in this song this was the one used more repetition. This is an appropriate source for this specific unit because of the artist that made this song she used many different literary devices to express the way she is feeling and what is going in her
The singer does not decide to report the abuse until it is too late. This song seems to pull on the emotions of the listener and encourages them to not hesitate to
In Carrie Underwood’s song “Jesus Take the Wheel,” she talks about how someone she knows is losing control of her life because of a very bad car crash and she needs help from Jesus to help her recover. The girl that was in the car crash nearly died and her boyfriend (now her husband) wrote a song about how it was really hard for her and how she needs Jesus to help her recover. When that girl was in the car crash, she had a baby in the back seat just like Carrie Underwood sang in her song. Carrie Underwood wrote this song for them and it became a huge hit.
After listing to this video many people wanted to stop bullying. This song got into people’s head; this two kids felt the feelings that everyone felt, and thus established credibility. In the article mashable Chloe said “Its unreally that these two changed so many people views on bullying, and gave the victims of bullying strength, thank you”. This two kids have been bullied so they are qualified to tell us how bullying hurts emotionally and mentally. on the following lyrics this two kids convince us that we need to be hopeful even though if life isn’t easy “Cause I'm hopeful, yes I am, Hopeful for today (Hopeful for today) Take this music and use it (Bars and Melody!) Let it take you away (Take you away) and be hopeful, hopeful (Yeah) and he'll make a way i know it ain't easy but that's okay Just be hopeful” The video takes place in a school, every one want to see this cute creatures. Watching kids is worthy and that helped to establish ethos. In the article neon nettle sasha stton said “Their lyrics reduced judge Alesha Dixon to tears, and even touched Simon Cowell” so this shows it touches the
In the Hip Hop culture the song “Keep Ya Head Up”, was one of the first rap songs to bring up touchy issues about black woman. The rapper 2pac touches upon a lot of the issues we are learning about and the song also relates to the three step process that Craig Warner associates with gospel. In Chapter 1 of Understanding African American Aspects in Hip-Hop Cinema, it states that gospel music affirms “A belief that life's burdens can be transformed into hope, salvations , the promise of redemption.” While listening to the song I was able to break down the meaning using the three step process that Craig Warner associates with gospel. “(1) acknowledging the burden; (2) bearing witness; (3) finding redemption. The burden grounds the song in the history of suffering that links individual and community experience.” With this i was able to connect and vibe with the song and i will tell you how below.
In Proverbs 21:35 it says, “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” It was intended for women to live life as it says in this verse: to radiate with strength and dignity, and not to be afraid of what is to come. Unfortunately, in today’s world, being a woman can come with many struggles and does not always leave one radiating with strength or dignity. It fact, it can make one fear the future even more. In her music video entitled “Praying,” artist Kesha addresses these very issues. In “Praying,” Kesha suggests that she has found a new identity and hope in a higher power having endured the struggles
To start off, the first stanza in her song represents a sense of how unavoidable change is and how the confusion of the bond combined with the stress of the blame game can lead to a doomed
Most songwriters write a song to express their feeling or moment they had at one point. These songs may be hard to understand until you reread it. A poem is the same thing as writing songs. A poem is something that arouses strong emotions and so is music. Florence and the Machine sings a song called “Seven Deadly Sins” she uses demons as a metaphor for her rage against a wrongdoer. Florence repeats words that have a deeper meaning than listeners would’ve thought. An example is when she refers the seven devils to the seven deadly sins. “Seven devils around me, seven devils around in my house”. The seven deadly sins are wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. I believe that seven devils represent the person who did her wrong.
Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen seems to show that her music has grown up from all the catchy, party sounding tune to a more soulful harmony. Very different from her earlier hits ‘Call Me Maybe’ and ‘I Really Like You’, the newest single from her sophomore album E-MO-TION named ‘Making the Most of the Night’ has visibly displayed this singer in a very different light.
Dan Simmons, an acclaimed American author writes mainly horror, science fiction, thrillers and mystery books. Honoured with several awards, Simmons writes mostly writes about religion, mythology, resurrection, love, betrayal and death. Known for mastering and intermixing different genre, Simmons’s Song of Kali is an example of intermingling horror, science fiction and fantasy. It is an accessible read and his characters seem genuine and recognisable in daily life. The complexity and nature of the struggles of the characters and with their vivid accounts, add to the readers’ intrigue
I believed that the song is about a girl who lost her mother/family and she turns to drugs to deal with the pain, because the first verse he says “She never mentions the word addiction// In certain company.// Yes, she'll tell you she's an orphan// After you meet her family.” I feel like she wants you to meet her family but she tells you her truths first. I feel the verse about her talking to angels is her biological family she thinks they are searching and looking for her “Says she talks to angels.// They call her out by her name. //Oh
With the recent battle that, pop music artist, Kesha has faced, there has been a tremendous amount of conversation about sexual violence. Kesha's story has recently opened up the conversation about sexual violence. With the growing number of groups organizing and bringing awareness to sexual violence, I believe that many people are becoming aware that this is no longer a personal problem.
Gay, gigantic, grotesque, geek are just some words that I was called during my elementary and middle school years. During this horrendous time in my life, I used to sit in my room and listen to Kelly Clarkson’s song “What Doesn’t Kill You.” I remember sitting next to my life size teddy bear, sobbing and wishing that the labels that were embedded in my body would go away. Screaming and throwing pillows across my room, with the music playing in the background and listening to the lyric “what [does not] kill you makes you stronger” (lines 13-14) used to comfort me. Every time that I heard the lyric, it would make me realize that I can get through this. I can get through the agony that the demons were causing me. I used to think to myself that
Originally, I saw the song performed on television during the Oscars. During the performance, 50 survivors of sexual assault came onto the stage. In her music video, the video displays statistics about sexual assaults that occur on college campuses. The ending of the video shares the phone number of National Sexual Assault Hotline. Both the live performance the messages presented in the video relate to messages from the mass
In Katy Perry’s song “Roar,” she inspires several to stand up for what they believe in and not let other people push them down. It is trying to motivate people to come back as a better and stronger person and be proud of who you are. The lyrics in this song are very inspirational considering the fact that they are trying to explain that you don’t have to be afraid of other people and know that you are an excellent person. We should be proud of who we are and accept the fact that we are going to get pushed down by other people, but we are able to come back as a stronger person. Sometimes you are going to be beaten down by someone, but you have to prove to them that you are not going to accept those actions and revive as a different person.
