With the recent battle that, pop music artist, Kesha has faced, there has been a tremendous amount of conversation about sexual violence. Kesha's story has recently opened up the conversation about sexual violence. With the growing number of groups organizing and bringing awareness to sexual violence, I believe that many people are becoming aware that this is no longer a personal problem. After reading the "Rape Prevention Tips" article, I believe that the article's point is a valid point. Rape preventative measures should be directed toward the perpetrator and towards the targeted person. However, despite people being informed of both aspects of the preventative measures, I believe that people will continue to commit these crimes. This concept
The documentary, Rape in the Fields, explores the experiences of women farm workers who are either documented or undocumented immigrants. Unfortunately, many of the men that these women work with take advantage of that fact by using it as a threat in order for them to commit sexual assault towards these women. The issues of “unwelcome” and “involuntary” actions, power and powerless, vulnerability, and receiving help for these women are all portrayed within this documentary. As defined in the presentation, “sexual conduct is unwelcomed whenever the person subjected to it considers it unwelcome.”
Ali Owens wrote this article to convince readers that rape culture is a very real and harmful thing that silences victims and allows criminals to run free. Victims around the world are silenced because of a society that chooses to blame them for the acts committed against them. Today, rape culture is evident in how the police and society treat the situation. Owens provides examples of rape culture through scenarios that women often find themselves in and uses imagery to allow readers to feel as if they are watching them unfold. A woman hesitates to call an Uber and is accused of “unfairly judging men,” but then, political leaders, such as Donald Trump, tweet about the inevitable sexual assault in the military because “they put women and men together.” A woman is scared
The term "statutory rape" is defined as “sexual relations between an underage minor female and an adult male or vice versa” (Criminology: The Core). Individuals that engage in sexual activity should be at the age of consent. The age of consent varies by state laws and the legal ramifications for breaking this law is set in accordance with their ethical standards. The age of consent law even considers sexual relation between a minor and adult that is non-violent or unforced to be statutory rape.
The accusation of statutory rape can insult both parties involved when the case is of a completely consensual & committed relationship. Since the year 2003 the legality is expected to be easily understood, if one person isn’t giving consent, with the capacity to do so, and the other involved does not think there’s consent, that is an offence. So when two people in a committed relationship are being punished for something that any other normal couple could do without such extreme consequences, is the statutory rape law really just?
Statutory law in particular is discriminating to boys and very patronizing to girls, throughout my research I have found many studies where women have cried in front of the judge and the judge will let them off with a minimum of three months probation, or a few hours of community service. Albert Einstein once said that, “The world is not dangerous because of those who do harm but because of those who look at it without doing anything.”
Many people think moderate drinking is perfectly safe. It feels good and, most of the time, a drink or two seems to not cause any obvious, immediate harm. Surely, this is fine? However, this is not necessarily true. It is increasingly becoming clear that even small amounts of alcohol can be harmful.

College is a place for trying out, experiencing and learning new things and being sexually assaulted should not be one of them. Sexual assault in college campuses over the past decade has increased by over 50% as stated by Laura Stampler in her article “Report Sees Surge in Sex Crimes on College Campuses”: “The number of sex crimes reported on U.S. college campuses soared by 50% over the course of a decade, according to a new government report Tuesday, even as total campus crime decreased” (Laura Stampler). A national survey made by and released in April of 2014 by the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault states that at least one in five college students, including men and women, experience some form of sexual assault during their time in college. In another article published on bestcolleges.com, the author states that over 95% of college campus rapes go unreported, which implies that there might be more than one in five students that gets sexually assaulted by the end of their college career. Not only that but the article on bestcolleges.com also states that women are most likely to be sexually
Today’s society is one in which the idea of male superiority dominates, one that Edwards et al. says fosters the idea that “rape ideologies emanate from a patriarchal system” (qtd. in Franiuk). The influences on modern American culture, what it idolizes and produces, are often times truly sickening. Popular television programs and other media present depictions of women that promote a society of rape culture. The rapper Eminem, just one of the famous rap artists who has a bad reputation, refers to women in very derogatory ways. His song “Kim” was released in 2000, and is believed to have been written about his then-wife, Kim Mathers. In it, the rapper says, “Sit down bitch/If you move again I'll beat the shit out of you,” among other things, and even goes on to describe other types of violence that he wants to commit against her (Bass). When taking into consideration Eminem’s subject matter, his popularity is alarming. His music, and thousands of other songs like his, is filling the ears of impressionable youth and naïve adults, permeating their minds with horrible ideas.
Today, many kids don’t know how to deal with the trauma after they were raped because the subject is so taboo that they feel as if it was their fault due to the fact they were never told otherwise in a safe environment. Schools don’t talk about sex unless they are enforcing a strong message of abstinence. This leaves a lot of gray area for most teens today. Because of this, adolescents don’t know the line between consensual and non-consensual sex, who’s to blame in a situation like Melinda’s, and if it is okay to ask any questions about the subject. Kids who were raped and going through this struggle will start to find a way to blame themselves. Victims of sexual assault feel like they need to “confess everything [and] hand over the guilt and mistake and anger to someone else” (Anderson 51). Victims of rape shouldn’t
Women, girls, men, and boys are vulnerable victims of sexual assaults every day in our country. While females experience much higher rates of sexual assaults than males. The problem that this country faces is the lack of being able to track rapist, in addition to the victims that chose not to report their assault of being raped to the police. Issues of under reporting comes from the victims with multiple reasons that hinders them from reporting these heinous criminal acts. Thus, the sad realization is that the perpetrator is usually some one that you know, that you would of never of thought that they could and would, and do sexually assault you.
Every two minutes a woman is sexually assaulted in the United States (FBI, 2003). According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, sexual assault is the most under-reported violent crime in the United States. In 2005, the Armed Forces received 2,374 reports of alleged cases of sexual assault involving its members. Of these figures, the Air Force received 584 reports. That is an increase of 28 percent over the past year (DoD, 2005). The Air Force is concerned with the safety, dignity, and well-being of all its members. The Air Force does not tolerate sexual assault and has implemented a comprehensive policy that reinforces prevention, response, and accountability.

Sexual assault and rape are on-going issues plaguing college campuses all across the nation. In part, I believe this is due to a lack of education on what sexual assault actually is. All too often, victims are leaving these situations feeling confused about something that they will forever deem "a weird night". It often isn't until much later that they realize what happened to them was a violation of their body and of their rights.
College-age adults are known to be high risk for sexual violence and most studies show that one in three women have experiences some type of sexual assault whether it was through physical force or harassment. These statics are known by most women on college campuses to ensure that women know and understand that this could happen to them. The issue is more than ensuring that women are aware of how protect themselves and know how to avoid these situations because it shouldn’t even be happening. When women are taught that they should know how to defend themselves we are saying that this type of behavior is normal and inevitable. We should shift from this dynamic and start teaching both men and women that this behavior is completely unacceptable and that sexually assaulting or harassing someone is NOT normal. This paper will mostly focus on incidents of rape and sexual assault on college campuses and what the outcome and reactions of these incidents were.
