The short story genre often follows a template that has been laid out by the first-ever short story writers. In the course of time, the upcoming authors started to make use of the template which contains several aspects such as literary devices. The authors of the short story genre often write their story with the use of literary elements. Literary elements are powerful tools that authors often use to deliver a message to the readers or even build an indirect connection with the readers. In short stories, such as “The Key Game”, by Ida Fink, “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, each author uses literary devices to enrich their story; however only one of all the literary elements has a value …show more content…
In the short story entitled “Story of an Hour”, by Kate Chopin, the author incorporates irony throughout the story. For instance, Josephine says “Louis, open the door! I beg; open the door – you will make yourself ill. What are you doing, Louise? For heaven’s sake open the door.”, she believes that Mrs. Mallard is probably crying after hearing about Mr. Mallard, and it could affect her since she has a weak heart; however, Mrs. Mallard is delighted with her freedom. This situation is ironic because in the past the woman was seen as weak; therefore, Josephine represents the woman who society portrays and not Louise, who is not sad for the death of her husband instead she’s happy to be free. Another example of irony is when Kate Chopin writes “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease – of joy that kills.”. This clearly means that people believed that she died of happiness of seeing her husband alive; however, she really died because of the moment her husband steps back in the household it’s like he took back her happiness of freedom. Mrs. Mallard knew she wouldn’t be free anymore since her husband is back. Again, the use of irony is powerful as it plays the key role in moving the story forward and deepening its …show more content…
For instance, the fact that Montresor decides to murder Fortunato during the carnival season is very clever; Montresor says “It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend.”, the carnival represents the time where people are enjoying, getting intoxicated, and spending time with their loved ones. Also, in the carnival mood, people are drunk and vulnerable; this is a distraction, and they also wouldn’t think about of a murder during the carnival season. Another example, in which the setting plays an important role is the catacombs; Montresor says “We had passed through walls of piled bones, with casks and puncheons intermingling into the inmost recesses of the catacombs.”, the catacombs represent darkness and dull environment. The setting of the catacombs also illustrates confinement; This environment is completely different from the beginning of the short story where people were having fun in the festival. The short story takes a drastic move from freedom to confinement in a mere lapse of time. The setting of a short story makes the readers know the context of where the story is taking place. Also, sometimes the authors tend to use a specific type of setting to
Authors use stylistic techniques to convey meaning and to bring richness and clarity to their pieces of writing. In the short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” a man named Smiley is cheated out of a bet after he was so confident that he was going to be victorious. In the short story “Cannibalism in the Cars,” a train full of political figures is stopped by a severe snowstorm, preventing them from continuing their journey. In “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and “Cannibalism in the Cars,” Mark Twain uses imagery, characterization, and foreshadowing in order to aid a reader's understanding of the stories.
There are numerous great authors from the 1800’s but the one who stands out most to me would have to Mrs. Kate Chopin. She was a misinterpreted writer whose works are now respected by many. Kate Chopin, born Catherine (Kate) O’Flaherty, was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 8, 1850. Kate was mentored by many women during the course of her youth. She had trauma through her young years. Chopin’s father was killed in 1855 in a railroad accident, 1863 her great grandmother died, and later her half-brother died in the war once he was apprehended by Union forces and died of typhoid fever. In 1870 Catherine O’Flaherty came to be Mrs. Kate Chopin when she married Oscar Chopin. They had kept their love a secret until they were meant to marry.
The lavish black roquelaire absorbed nearly all of the light in the surrounding area which perfectly made a silhouette of Montresor’s figure. The smell of nitre permeated throughout the air like a plague. The smell was so overpowering that I nearly passed out. As I hung there, bound to the wall by cold rusted chains, I could make out the twisted smile of Montresor as he removed his silken mask. I looked him in the eye and could see the hate behind them. It seemed to be more primal and real than anything else I had ever seen. After staring me down, Montresor hastily produced that godforsaken trowel from underneath his cloak and started to lay layer after layer of brick, starting to enclose me into this horrible room. My last view of Montresor
Narcissism is characterized by grandiosity, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for admiration. Both General Zaroff from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, and Fortunato from “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe exhibit these qualities, when General Zaroff killed his prey and when Montresor got revenge on Fortunato. They were too absorbed in themselves to see how their humanity was impaired. In both texts, the authors utilize a violent conflict, an isolated setting, and vivid characterization to illustrate how excessive pride can distort one’s judgement, demonstrating the importance of humility and humaneness.
Irony is a useful device for giving stories many unexpected twists and turns. In Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," irony is used as an effective literary device. Situational irony is used to show the reader that what is expected to happen sometimes doesn't. Dramatic irony is used to clue the reader in on something that is happening that the characters in the story do not know about. Irony is used throughout Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" through the use of situational irony and the use of dramatic irony.
In the stories “Story of an Hour”, “Everyday Use”, “The Necklace”, and “The Lottery” it is evident that irony was quite a large part of the short story. There is situational irony, which is when the situation turns out differently than expected. Also, dramatic irony is present, which is when you as a reader knows more than the character. The authors seem to base their whole story around irony to surprise their readers.

The stylistic choices of symbols and setting description are crucial to the engagement of the reader and ultimately the expression of the main theme. The message of each story is enhanced by little details like symbols and setting that add layers to the story and make it more interesting. The use of setting to display the characters emotions reflects how humans are influenced by their emotions, while the use of symbols reflects how there is often a deeper meaning or a hidden message behind common things, such as names or games. The authors’ stylistic choices of symbols and setting enhance their stories and help the reader further grasp the message. and settings are all three common things that most everyone has, plays or sees.
Edgar Allen Poe’s story, “The Cask of Amontillado” is the story of two men, Fortunato and Montressor. This story is a prime example of how the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words may never hurt me” is false. Basically, Fortunato was rude and insulted Montressor, but instead of ignoring the bastard Montressor lowkey went too far with the revenge and murdered Fortunato.
In the “Story of an Hour” we observe many instances in which irony takes place.
Kate Chopin uses irony in her stories to show true emotion. It is also used to show feelings as well. Throughout her short story "The Storm," several examples of irony come forth, whether it be verbal, situational, or dramatic, it aids us to stay focused on the story by keeping it interesting.
Kate Chopin has been known to put works of literary art together. She puts into our minds the ways in which society and cultures existed back in her time of life. She uses society influences in her short stories in which people felt very strongly about. This story reveals the mindset of society in relation to racism and mixed rational persons.
“The Cask of Amontillado” is a short story of revenge by Edgar Allen Poe. Taking place during a carnival in Italy not expecting a dreadful surprise as Montresor confronts fortunato at the carnival and says he has Amontillado. Montresor has had enough of Fortunato's silly games that made him look bad and vowed for revenge. Montresor leads Fortunato through the catacombs and gave him alcohol to help him stay drunk. Montresor finally reaches to the end of the catacombs to a dead end.
After having read “The Most Dangerous Game, and The Cask of Amontillado” I've decided that my favorite out of the two is The Cask of Amontillado. My reasoning for this is that Edgar Allan Poe wrote it and he is my favorite writer and he is one of the few that i've read. I’ve read a good percentage of his work such as, The raven, (Tall, Tall) Hart, and Anabelly, these stories have an element of mystery and twisted sense of humor. They also have murder my favorite type of books are murder and mystery. In this story Fortunato, Montresor are the main characters, Montresor is the one trying to kill Fortunato, so he can somehow get revenge for a reason he hasn't tolled us about. His plan is to escort Fortunato to the catacombs
The short story is a concise form of narrative prose that is usually simpler and more direct compared to longer works of fiction such as novels. Therefore, because of their short length, short stories rely on many forms of literary devices to convey the idea of a uniform theme seen throughout the script. This theme is illustrated by using characteristics that are developed throughout the story such as, plot, setting and characters. The three main components are developed throughout the story in order to guide the reader to the underlying theme, which is necessary as a short story lacking a theme also lacks meaning or purpose.
