Edgar Allen Poe’s story, “The Cask of Amontillado” is the story of two men, Fortunato and Montressor. This story is a prime example of how the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words may never hurt me” is false. Basically, Fortunato was rude and insulted Montressor, but instead of ignoring the bastard Montressor lowkey went too far with the revenge and murdered Fortunato. Edgar Allan Poe: A Study of the Short Fiction, critic Charles E. May says, “We can legitimately hypothesize that the listener is a priest and that Montressor is an old man who is dying and making final confession…” I agree with this hypothesis.
