ZEITOUN-KATHY
In Dave Eggers nonfiction novel Zeitoun, Kathy is an American woman who converts from Christianity to Islam before marrying her Syrian-born Muslim husband, Abdulrahman Zeitoun. Together, they have three daughters and own and operate a painting company in New Orleans.
In her earlier years, Kathy found herself divorced with an infant son working fifty hours a week. “….her life was a struggle, and she was looking for some order and answers.”(Eggers 61). Kathy started becoming disheartened by the preacher at her evangelical church she was attending for the congregation 's lack of charitable donations. She began talking to her lifelong friend Yuko who also was raised Christian about her concerns and questions. “disappointed with the aspects of Christianity she knew, in some of the things she’d seen”. (64). She felt disgraced for not being listened and understood by her pastor (66). They both realized that Islam and Christianity were quite similar “So by fits and starts; she followed Yuko into Islam.” (66). Kathy was initially ignorant about Islam faith, and her conversion was inspired by curiosity and intellectual capability rather than the religious beliefs. "...she assumed Syria was entirely Muslim, but she was wrong about this and so many things..." (192
In Islam, Kathy knew that she had found calm. The doubt is sewn into the faith gave her room to think, to question, which Qur 'an provided

In his national bestselling novel Zeitoun, author Dave Eggers draws sympathy from his audience by applying the three appeals during the documentation of a muslim family’s experience with racial prejudice in post 9/11 Katrina. Eggers’ purpose calls upon painting a vivid picture of the discrimination towards the protagonist and his family before and after Hurricane Katrina. His tone is often sentimental and builds emotional appeal.
As discussed earlier in this paper religious conversion was common among soldiers and civilians alike. It not surprising for Elizabeth to have written of conversion happening in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Elizabeth wrote of the conversion to her son stating:
While growing up with her father, her religion was forced upon her, as for their punishment the children were sentenced to “the verse”, in which they were required to right out one hundred lines direct from the bible by memory. She doesn’t seem to enjoy the idea of faith, but there is no doubt that she realizes it’s
I think what would make Botetourt County a better community is more affordable housing And lower property tax. Firstly It would be beneficial because more and more of Botetourt residents have had to move out because of increased property value and tax so if there was more affordable housing they would be able to stay, secondly more jobs would be created, lastly more people might move into botetourt because housing is cheaper.
There is less of the logical appeal, logos, in Zeitoun but Eggers does present it. Using cause and effect, comparisons, and statistics, Eggers supports his argument through this logical appeal. An example of cause and effect would be the 9/11 example. Since this tragedy happen, many more stereotypes were brought upon Muslims, especially those living in America. After 9/11, Zeitoun found it more difficult to live in New Orleans. The cause was 9/11 and the effect was how the Muslim Americans were treated after the happening. Eggers also makes comparisons between the Muslim religion and the Christian view. These facts appeal to the reader’s intelligence and could also build upon their education of each religion. When Kathy is converting, Eggers states the similarities of each religion; “At first she was simply intrigued by the basic things she didn’t know, and the many things she’d wrongly presumed. She had no idea, for instance, that the Qur’an was filled with the same people as the Bible—(Eggers, 61).” Eggers goes on to compare Christianity to the Muslim faith, and points out that there are many different types of Muslims just like there are many types of Christians. Along with comparisons, the book has many statistics referencing to the hurricane. An example would be, by date, the death toll when Kathy is waiting
We start off with Ranya, who was intrigued about writing a children’s book about these different religions and how they all correlate as one since her children who were American Muslim had questions about their
Roselily changes religion so that her children may have a stable home. However, when she describes the transition, she feels trapped, “She thinks of ropes, chains, handcuffs, his religion.”(1, Walker) Roselily feels confined to her new religion, as she compares it to objects that bind things or people. Roselily sacrifices her religion, but why? For that, she is making sacrifices for her children, so that they can have a better life. “Her children at last from underneath the detrimental
Throughout the history of the United States, there has never been a long period without any sort of confrontation. Whether the confrontation is a problem with in this country or one involving other countries. Warfare as we know it today came from one major war in our country’s history, The American Civil War. The Civil War was the major turning point in our nation’s warfare history, from weapons to battle tactics this war changed our country, and pushed America to achieve what war problems came in the way of the young growing nation. The Civil War was a war that gave this country a new look on how wars were fought, and won with the help of new technology from transportation, communication with new and improved weapons.
As of today, the world’s two largest religions Christianity and Islam share an estimated 3.6 billion members, more than half of the world’s population. On the surface, they appear to have almost nothing in common, however, as one goes beyond the surface and examines the other factors such as the rituals, beliefs, ethics, founders, and convictions, the two religions share many similarities. However, in order to truly see and understand these similarities and differences, one must date back to the rise and birth of Christianity and Islam.
Social expectations have haunted people across the timeline, however, have changed as life has progressed. Today, women specifically may be labeled by their body size or the way they speak, being cast out of society and even being subjected to physical and/or emotional abuse. On the contrary, in the nineteenth century women faced harsh discrimination by white men that objectified them and forced them to submit to their husbands and tend to their every need. Today, women would never face to live in such an animalistic way, however many found themselves fulfilling the role without protest and enjoying the simplicity of such a life back in the 1800s. Edna Pontellier, however, refused to be one of these obedient women, deciding to instead

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is a book written by Nabeel Qureshi, a devout Muslim who encountered Christianity after growing up in a Muslim home in America, which instilled Islamic practices, disciplines, and teachings in a non-Muslim culture. This book response identifies some of the significant challenges Muslims face as they attempt to preserve the traditions and teaching of their family in the Western world. It provides great insight into the life of Muslims and reveals why the journey from Islam to Christianity is so difficult. His purpose in writing this book is to give non-Muslim readers insight into the Muslim’s heart and mind, so that love will be shared to Muslims (Qureshi, 2014, p. 17).
At the first glance, Islam and Christianity appear to have nothing in common, however; as you go beyond the surface, they appear to have many similarities such as their beliefs of God, their beliefs of life after death, their holy scriptures, and their prayers. These religions, although are two entirely different beliefs, share a similar origin. Like many other religions, they both claim to be the one and only true way to God. In order to truly see and understand their similarities, one must date back to the rise and birth of Christianity and Islam. Throughout the course of this essay, I will compare the many facets that show the alikeness between these two growing religions.
By carrying out the method of doubt, we are able to free ourselves from all prejudices with the intention of being able to withdraw our mind from our senses. In doing so, we set a base for being able to decipher the truth from the falsity (Meditations, 39). The reasoning to doubt not only comes from the desire to learn the truth, but to “establish anything firm and lasting
