“Volunteers are not paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” This quote stated by Sherry Anderson speaks to individuals who experience a greater reward helping the community or individuals instead of their own financial gains. Although many of us believe these are just “hours” that are essential to graduate, we may fail to witness its profound effects communally and personally.
The organization heavily counts on volunteers to make its mission a reality. “Not only was it rewarding giving back but we also had the opportunity to learn about
As a volunteer I've learned the value of service to others and to the community, and I've seen the impact it has on those involved. I’ve seen so many people, especially through church outreach, positively affected by those who use their time and talents to serve others. Although volunteering has benefited me externally in many ways, such as my Eagle Scout Project and NHS hours, I’ve also gained a greater understanding of who I am as a person. I’ve learned how important service is and how it can benefit myself and others around
Often as we grow our schedules we forget to acknowledge the fact that our name does not read “volunteer needed”. It has been said, and I sincerely repeat, that if we fail ever say no than our yes loses its value. A resounding alarm greeted an early six o'clock sunlight that signaled the end of a sleep cycle. Pulling on clothes and a quick flash of vision directed at a schedule summed up the morning other than the arrival to a National Honor Society meeting, which would be followed by a Leo club lunch meeting and trailed by a Business Professionals of America after school practice. A typical day of a Stephenson High School senior displays in this way. They are involved in many activities, both school oriented and community involved. This leaves little to no time to develop personality traits other than ones that involve servitude. While it is important to be involved in the community, overinvolvement decreases the quality of the rendered services and overwhelms the individual performing these service
Volunteering is often seen as free labor. However, there is a significant cost associated with the recruitment, training, and maintenance of the volunteer force. A full-time staff to oversee the volunteer program is necessary as well to ensure volunteers are being used effectively. The recruitment process varies from advertising to speaking at schools to
Many people don’t realize the true value of volunteering, but I’ve come to understand the incredible impact of volunteering through my experience at Memorial Hermann. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” For me, his words could not be truer.
Through National Honors Society, I have gained self-confidence, empathy and respect not only for teachers, but also for employees who diligently fulfill their responsibilities. Volunteering allows participants to perceive certain situations from different perspectives and therefore has allowed me to enhance my understanding of the plights teachers and young students may encounter on a daily basis. From grading a gigantic stack of assignments to engaging in mundane tasks such as tearing out multiple worksheets from workbooks, there are many events that occur outside of typical school hours that I would not have been able to witness and learn from had I not been an active member of National Honors Society. Likewise, now reflecting on all my volunteering at my local
While I have been blessed with many opportunities that helped me grow by pushing me to new limits, my volunteer work at South McKeel Academy through National Honor Society is my most memorable. The way I was brought upon this experience was not with the average vote. One morning I showed up to the 7 A.M. meeting ready to hear about how all
This is what sets the students at Valley Region apart from others. Students attending Valley are not required to turn in volunteer hours in order to graduate, thus making volunteering in the community completely optional. When approached on why students like Freddie himself, from Valley, would still fill their already busy schedules with volunteer work Kerr responded, “Even though it seems cliche, I joined Habitat to make a positive difference in my community. With Habitat, I knew I could physically make a difference in somebody’s life, that’s something you can’t really do everyday.” This philosophy is what makes students from this particular community shine out among the rest. This group of kids was not looking for any spot light or racing for a requirement to fulfill, but volunteered merely out of the kindness in their own
I like your standpoint because the important thing is the organization needs to recognize a volunteers time and how much their efforts are worth to their mission statement. Your analogy about the doctor gave me a new perspective about the quote because much like you said, it doesn't diminish the value being that, the work is price less and the work the doctor has done isn't going to be forgotten just because their was a "dollar value" on
Most people find volunteering a fulfilling and rewarding experience. However, I do not always feel that way. Sometimes I feel like my work is not very enjoyable or that it contributes little to helping others. Thankfully, at Maliheh Free Clinic, I felt not only that my work was fun and helpful but that I was part of a family--a family of volunteers, doctors, and patients. My internship at Maliheh taught me the joy of helping others through dedication and hard work.
According to the article “Why volunteer? Because you can gain more than you give” by Carrie Chapman, she says that “Volunteering can teach you things about the world that you didn’t even know” III. Today, I will talk about three main points that will convince you to be a volunteer that are problem that people don’t have time to

“Volunteers are not paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” - Sherry Anderson (Volunteering Quotes: Finest Quotes).
Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.
In my five years of active volunteer work with multiple non-profit organizations, I have seen firsthand the lack of attendance of my peers in times of great community need and support from its members. Although it has become more complicated to find time to give back to the community, with a full-time school and work schedule, there is always spare time to give back. The rapidly growing demand for volunteers in communities all across America is increasing and it is everyone’s duty, especially college students, to pay their dues to the
