Their term was only one year long, and the same person could not be elected again for ten years. The senate was also another branch of Rome's government. They had three hundred members that were chosen from the upper class. Lastly Rome also had a dictator. A dictator is someone who had all the power in his hands and he could chose to do whatever he wanted.

Rome, a vast empire that could not control itself, due to how much it had grown, was in a dire need for someone to rule it. Three powerful men would rise to the occasion and answer the call. Everybody thought that the split of power was going to work out, but what they didn’t know was it would lead to a civil war. “An unstable Republic and a near civil war brought three men to set aside their differences and even contempt for one another to join forces and dominate the government of Rome, even controlling elections, for nearly a decade,” (First 1). First we’ll look into the men in the trimunative, then the fight for power, and finally the financial status of the Empire.

The Roman empire consisted of many great rulers, some were exceptional, but others were insane. The first sole ruler was a man named Octavian, who was later on named Augustus. After a century of war he restored Rome to all of its glory and managed to sustain peace throughout the land, however, he had to create a new system for the government to run on. In the first years he did not declare himself a dictator, in order to avoid past conflicts, he instead concealed his power. Augustus did not only fix the government, but he also made many military achievements too, such as creating permanent bodyguards and city police.

There have been many famous leaders in Roman history but none could match Julius Caesar[See Figure 1]. Julius Caesar was born on July 13, 100 BC in Rome and died March 15, 44 BC in Rome. Julius Caesar is best known for his military mind and how he laid the framework for the Roman Republic. One of the quotes he is famous for is "I came, I saw, I conquered." Caesar has not just influenced Rome, he also influenced the world too. The Roman Calendar was rigged to help political purposes. Caesar devised a new Calendar called the Julian Calendar to combat that manipulation[See Figure 2]. Leaders are necessary because they need to show leadership amongst the people and unite the people as one doing anything to keep them safe. To begin with, in Document 3 both the historical figures have the same initials of “JC”; Julius Caesar and Jesus Christ are their names. Also, another similarity between both Julius Caesar and Jesus Christ is their welcoming back to their town. They both were welcomed with many arms and many who did not like their coming back. He received three wealthy provinces in Gaul in 58 B.C.E (Ancient Rome). He then went out and attempted to gain control of the rest of the region for Rome. We all know that he successfully did that because of how far the Roman empire spread and how big it was. He declared himself dictator for life. After Pompey’s wife Julia who was Caesar's daughter died in 54 B.C. and Crassus was killed in battle against Parthia the following year, the triumvirate was broken (Ancient Rome). He died after being stabbed by his political rivals (Ancient Rome). Julius is remembered as one of the greatest military minds in history and he created the foundation for the Roman Empire. Another great leader was Augustus, he was a very important Roman emperor. Augustus led the change from a republic to a empire right after Julius Caesar (Anderson 47). He contributed by creating a strong military, created important architecture and created laws. He also laid the foundations of the Pax Romana which was Roman Peace that lasted for 200 years (Anderson 47). These two dictators and emperors are the ones who turned Rome into what it was. Romans were a civilization that originated after the Greek culture. They, like Greeks, saw an extreme significance in the idea of a love for one’s country and loyalty. The Romans, however, were more concerned with public affairs such as education, sanitation, and health. They held a strong connection with their ancestors and wished to imitate what the ancient Romans did. Although Romans rejected the idea of a Rex, or king, they favored the common hero. They wanted a leader who a “regular Joe”, someone who was average and could still led an average life after doing extraordinary things. The Romans also had a very defined government that was broken into consuls, senate, and assembly. There were two consuls who served in place of the king as the leaders of the Roman Empire. Next in succession was the senate, comprised only of patricians who debated and passed legislation. Finally, there was the assembly made for the plebeians to approve laws.
