On Monday morning at Fernandez’s house party, Fernandez and Henfling were under the influence and a fist fight broke out. The reason for the fistfight was unknown however, the outcome was tragic. Luis Adolfo Gomez Zacarias was a local businessman engaged in retail sales of food and household items. For an extended period, prior to September 20, 2013, he was being extorted under death threats by an organized criminal gang, and when no longer able to pay the 500 Quetzal per month extortion demand, he was murdered. The day prior to his murder, he implored his spouse to take measures to protect herself and their child, prompting lead respondent to seek police assistance and protection when her spouse failed to arrive home from work. The police, ignored her multiple requests for help, and the following morning Luis Adolfo Gomez Zacarias was found murdered by gunshot to the head (see Tab G and Tab L). Local neighbors, familiar with police unwillingness to aid residents of the community under extortion threats by gangs, organized street protests against the police because of police inaction after lead respondent’s pleas for
This is a letter to the editor of the article, "Louisiana Marshall Convicted in Boys Fatal Shooting" written by Ray Sanchez, about the tragic shooting of a boy by a U.S. Marshall. Derrick Stafford was convicted of manslaughter after drawing his gun, and firing into a car after a pursuit. Six year old, Jeremy Mardis, was hit by five bullets and died on scene.
Annually hundreds of wrongfully convicted bystanders are let out of prison, some having served decades for crimes they didn’t commit. On January 13th, 1999, Hae Min Lee of Woodlawn high school was murdered and her body later found in linkin park. The person convicted? Adnan Syed, an ex-boyfriend. With, the majority of the evidence easily disproven by cell tower records, an alibi not ever addressed, and jurors who openly admit his culture was a factor, Adnan Syed deserves the right to a new and fair trial.
Stephon’s brother, Stevante Clark said, "He was arrested before, but he's been different lately, he really changed his life. He was a people person who everybody wanted to be around. We came from underprivileged, broken homes, but he didn't care about nothing else but his kids." Quotes like this lead the reader to question police efforts in killing a justifiably ethic man. This paper will be covering the controversial case of the shooting of Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman. This was a polarizing trial for it pitted gun rights activists against gun-control activists and people who were generally against the new gun rhetoric that is in Florida. George Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch for the gated community and would always do his job diligently. However, one night he witnessed someone in a grey hoodie walking on the sidewalk wearing a hoodie. Zimmerman thought this person was suspicious and continued to follow him. After Zimmerman called in that he was following this individual, he was told not to leave his vehicle. Instead, he followed the person into who knows where and the rest of the story is up for debate. The defense team stated that Trayvon had jumped out of the bushes and begun to attack Zimmerman violently to the point where he felt that his life was in danger. The prosecution believed that Zimmerman had initiated a fight with Trayvon and he was at the mercy of Zimmerman at gunpoint for a significant amount of time.
According to the FBI (2007) the Beltway Snipers was a series of random murders that had occurred around the Washington D.C. area during the month of October in 2002. The case was closely studied and investigated by the Montgomery County Police Department and was led by Chief Charles Moose with additional help from other government services such as the FBI. The identities of these two men were discovered due to clues that were purposely left behind by the perpetrators. Their names were John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo. During this time in history, these two names were known to strike fear in people’s hearts and make people think twice about going outside and continuing their regular day-to-day activities. In the end, both of Malvo and Muhammad were charged with life in prison, but Muhammad was also charged with the death penalty. Today, only Malvo is still alive and now realizes the wickedness of the crimes he committed. This paper is not only going to introduce you to the Beltway Snipers, but also help you become more aware of the reasons as to why they did this, all of the victims that were involved, and the significance of this case as a whole.

Hardly a day goes by where a murder doesn’t occur. Usually, it is in a big city, such as Chicago, but sometimes it happens in a small town, maybe even not far from you. As we see a small town called New Baltimore located just outside of Detroit, not much seemed to happen in this small town...until someone murdered Justin Mello. This event leads to a shattered town with a reminder to us all, life is just a vapor, we can never be promised another day.
This past Saturday, October 17th in the 23900 block of Avalon Blvd in Carson, California, yet another victim of the massive racial fight genocide in our South Central Community was shot and killed. 15 year old Latino boy; Adalberto Saucedo III. According to a source’s comment at The Homicide Report’s website, Monica described Alberto as “a loving kid, he loved his two brothers and they looked up to him”. I can’t help to pose the question: what could Alberto have done to deserve this? However, based on the information provided by the LAPD, we will probably never know and he will become another sad statistic.
In class we discussed how Latinos have very low death rates but it is unknown if this may change because of the police shooting at suspicious people when in reality many of them are innocent. The "lack of economic opportunities" can lead to mortality especially amongst Latinos because "individuals with low socioeconomic standing tend to die at higher rates and live shorter lives..."(Rios 93, Saenz 57). In Human Targets Rios explains that Flaco had gotten his support to gain employment, but the economic standing of his family left him alone with nothing and lead to him committing suicide(92). The attacks that the police make towards the Latinos they believe are a threat can lead to the death of the suspect. Victor Rios mentioned that "a boy nicknamed Silent experienced a raid in which the feds pointed a gun over his aunt 's
A major headline this week involves an individual named Antonio Montes out of Pasco, Washington. Antonio Montes was fatally shot and killed by Pasco police in February of 2015. Antonio was encountered by police that day as he was being violent and hostile towards individuals nearby. Police responded and made contact with Antonio at the scene. Antonio was throwing rocks at the police officers, as they were trying to have him stand down. Antonio refused to throw rocks, and was shot and killed by the Pasco police. Pasco police involved in the shooting, were cleared of any criminal matters. Antonio’s family has since then, filed a civil lawsuit of more than $25 million dollars in damages. My input on this headline leans towards the great work of the
On June 19, 1982, Vincent Chin was murdered after his bachelor party in a hate crime driven by an outrage towards the Japanese auto industry misplaced onto himself (Embracing). Neither of his murderers ever spent a day in prison, despite appeals made in court (Embracing). Vincent Chin and his case still matters to Americans and should be made aware to the Wayne State faculty and students by the Filipino Student Society (FilSoc). Not necessarily every single person needs to be told directly by the FilSoc, but at least a small portion of the faculty and student body should become aware of the Vincent Chin case through FilSoc’s efforts.
On the tenth of January, 2017, The La Times reported that, “A federal jury on Tuesday condemned unrepentant white supremacist Dylann Roof to death...” Dylann Roof was responsible for a mass murder that occurred during the summer of 2015, in which he opened fire at a church in South Carolina and killed nine African Americans. Nonetheless, this incident begs the question as to whether Roof, or any criminals for that matter, are deserving of such a drastic punishment. The answer,
One community that stands out the most for the conflict between law enforcement and their community is Ferguson, Missouri. On August 9, 2014 Darren Wilson, 28, a white Ferguson police officer fatally shot Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African-American male (McLaughlin). This case started one of the biggest uproar the nation has ever seen between community and law enforcement. When the incident first occurred there were many pieces of information missing to paint a scenario of how and what occurred between Brown and officer Wilson. Apparently Michael Brown was walking home late at night when officer Darren Wilson and Michael Brown got into a confrontation that lead to Wilson shooting Brown, the case goes
