Jonah is one of the most interesting stories in the Old Testament. In this paper, I will summarize the story of Jonah, and determine if this story is literal or not. Towards the end of this paper, I will give my final thoughts about Jonah. According to chapter one, the Lord spoke to Jonah and instructed him to preach in the city of Nineveh. Jonah did not want to go Nineveh so he decided that he wanted to run away from God. While Jonah was on his way to Tarshish, God sent a great wind on the sea and it threatened the safety of the passengers on the ship. Out of desperation, the sailors on the ship cried out to their gods, and they threw the cargo off the ship in an effort to stop the ship from sinking. During all of this distress, Jonah had gone below the deck, and he fell asleep. When the captain discovered Jonah below the deck, he criticized Jonah for not calling on his god. In Jonah’s response, he stated that the Lord made the sea and the dry land. Jonah’s statement frightened the ship’s crew, and they realized that God created the storm to punish Jonah for disobeying him. The bible tells the readers that Jonah told the crew that …show more content…
First of all, Jonah and the Giant Fish is one of the most unbelievable stories in the bible due to the fact that it is impossible for a man to survive in the belly of fish. The bible is filled with allegories and the story of Jonah is one of those allegories. Although the story of Jonah is fictional, the meaning of the story is still relevant, even in this decade. Jonah was a very, judgmental person, and he almost allowed his judgments to stop him from doing the will of the Lord. There are a lot of people who act like Jonah and it’s actually sad. Religion is supposed to be a good thing, but some people use it to judge others. The story of Jonah teaches the readers that it is important to humble yourself and help others, whether you agree with their lifestyle or
In conclusion, Bar-Jonah is a very sick person who eventually got what he deserved. He was a cannibal, sexual offender, kidnapper, molester, and overall a twisted killer. Who knows how many unknown people he has hurt, tortured, or killed and eaten. But now that he is dead and gone he won’t be able to hurt anyone

In the book of Jonah we see the vast amount of tension between both God and Jonah. He is one of the prophets who also believes in tolerance of non-Jews opposite to Ezra’s and Nehemiah’s stress of an unadulterated blood race of Jews under a restrictive Jewish God. Jonah is one of a vast line of important people in the bible who argues with God. As you see in past books of the bible everyone has stood their own against the Lord. Jonah though decides to try and run from God. The Lord called to Jonah and said “Arise, go to Ninevah, that great city, and cry against it,” but Jonah flees to Joppa, setting sail on a ship duty-bound for Tarshish, assuming he can evade the Lord. Jonah views the Lord as sort of a indigenous God of restrained power that his hand would not reach as

Jonah was given the task of delivering God’s message of impending judgment to a society that Jonah despised.
The book of Jonah is the story of God’s plan of redemption for mankind. It is a book that has received much criticism from many who would question the historicity of the book and has received heavy debate regarding different aspects within the book, from the conversion of the sailors, to the cause of Jonah’s anger over the city of Nineveh being spared.
The prophet Jonah was an angry, hateful man who lived in eighth century B.C. During the reign of King Jeroboam II, he was commission by God to go to Nineveh and tell them to repent of their wicked ways. While it is not known, who wrote the book of Jonah is it widely believed to be have been penned by the prophet himself. The passage I have chosen takes place after the people of Nineveh repent and God has shown compassion for them. Jonah is stubbornly angry at God’s compassion and leaves Nineveh. The passage picks up with Jonah sulking on a hill overlooking the city.
Friend… what has God been tugging on your heart about, and you haven’t obeyed Him yet? The temptation could be to join Jonah in his downward spiral, to turn away from the rich life God desires for
We often read stories in the Bible without taking the historical context into consideration. As a result, we become unaware of the story’s historical validity. In some cases, stories are used to share a moral concept, or used as a tool to teach a lesson. The Book of Jonah is an example that will be used to determine if this particular story describes an accurate recount of history, or if it teaches the readers a lesson. In the Book of Jonah, Jonah (the prophet) is instructed to go to a pagan city (Nineveh) to preach to the Ninevites, hoping that they will repent for their sins. However, he challenges God and travels to Tarshish instead. Jonah receives consequences for his actions and Nineveh is eventually forgiven by God. Although the
16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him. 17 Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
Ahmed Zewali, “In the Middle East, it is clear that peace will never be reached without solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A two-state solution must be found and enforced.” This quotation means that war is a continuous thing between Israel, and Palestine, and peace is an unsolved topic. This quotation relates to the stories Refugee-land from Palestine written by Joe Sacco, and Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi because they both relate towards the Middle East conflicts. Both Refugee-land from Palestine written by Joe Sacco, and Persepolis written by Marjane Satrapi have many similarities and differences.
The book of Jonah has been a staple in Sunday school classes for many years. It has also been subject to misinterpretation for many years as there is a much deeper meaning within the book that has enlightened audience that Jonah was originally written for. However, this remains one of the best books in that it contains a miracle that seems impossible which directly relates to people because it is a captivating story in which a man survives in the belly of a giant fish. Many have translated the word fish for a whale as that is the only fish that comes to mind that would have the capacity to hold a human. Let us talk about the facts, history, characteristics and some background that makes up the beloved book.
The author wants us to understand that like Jonah we are sometimes given tough missions or tasks but we can’t just run away from them. Once we follow God we cannot just follow him, we must be able to do things he wants us to do and tasks he has sent us to do. There may be numerous ways to hide or run but we can never run or hide in Gods sight. To God the world is like the tip of his finger he can see and watch every bit of action we are doing. The author knows that God has given us the destiny to do something under his name, every lifeform has its own destiny and we must accept them.
The first work describing a utopian society was Plato’s Republic. It is a description of a society with an environment as preferable and equal as one could imagine. Also, the Republic consists of a model for social, governmental, legislative and resource distribution rules necessary for the society to keep its sustainability. Characterized by its fixed system of social classes the model of society that is presented in Republic could be perceived by contemporary standards as dystopian. Taking into account the hardship of every-day life in the ancient world it would have been desirable to have a social class of highly educated altruistic philosopher-rulers of guaranteed quality and effectiveness. Hence, this is exactly the kind of system that
