Jonah and Tom are very alike. A good example is that both of them live in Brooklyn, New York. We know Tom lives in brooklyn because it says on page 3 “we lived in a Vinegar Hills section of Brooklyn”. They both like helping for their family’s too. For instance, it also says on page 3 “I’d been carrying home one of her laundry loads”. Jonah folds socks so that his family would have pairs of socks. Jonah and Tom are also very brave. Jonah is brave because he went on a scary roller coaster called the Mind Eraser. Tom is Brave because he decided to become a crew member for the Union ironclad called the Monitor. This is true because it says on page 86 “this is Tom Carroll. As you can see, he’s only a boy. Yet he has volunteered to join me upon the
For example, Edmond’s similarities to Andy include the fact that they were both framed for a crime they didn’t commit, found guilty, and sent to prison. Both used a different alias once they both escape prison, “The Count of Monte Cristo” (Edmond), and “Randall Stevens” (Andy). Both included a similar step in planning their escape from prison, by digging a hole through a wall in their cell; and for both characters, the evidence used to convict Edmond and Andy was disposed of, or destroyed.
In both the excerpts " To Kill a Mockingbird" and in " A Part of the Sky" both the young kids Walter Cunningham and Robert Peck are polite boys that share some similarities. Sameness on family background, life style, education etc.
Tom Buchanan and Jordan Baker exhibit similar character traits. Tom is a very powerful character, with a lack of moral qualms. He is arrogant, and extremely hypocritical which becomes apparent when he learns of Daisy’s extramarital affair with Gatsby. He instantly disapproves of Daisy’s wrongdoings,
Different books, despite different storylines, may still address similar themes. What similarities of themes did you find in your paired texts, and how are they obvious in the character's behaviour?
Sometimes in literature, two different forms of writing tell two different stories with lots of similarities through characters. The book The Catcher and The Rye by J.D Salinger and the movie The Dead Poets Society directed by Peter Weir is a perfect example of two different literary works that share similarities through characters. The Dead Poet Society follows half a school year of 5 main characters at Welton Academy each with a different connection to Holden Caulfield the main character from The Catcher in the Rye. These 6 main characters are Neil Perry, the smart one, Richard Cameron, the sycophant, Todd Anderson, who is exceeding shy, Knox Overstreet, the romantic, and Charlie Dalton,
Two other characters that are alike are Gene--from A Separate Peace--and Todd--from Dead Poets Society. Gene and Todd both are very shy and don’t speak up for themselves and what they really think throughout the novel and the film. It states in the text, “Going there [the beach] risked expulsion, destroyed the studying I was going to do,… blasted the reasonable amount of order I wanted to maintain in my life, and… involved [a]... bicycle ride I hated. ‘All right,’ I said”(46). Gene did not want to go to the beach with Finny for many reasons but because he is shy and doesn’t say what he thinks or wants, he agreed to go to the beach. So he accompanied Finny to the beach but he did it against his will just because he did not want to disappoint
Tom Wingfield and Ethan Frome are both intellectual dreamers who live in stifling, hopeless conditions. Ethan gave up his dreams of becoming an engineer due to his duty to care for his ailing parents, and later Zeena. Similarly, Tom writes poetry, reads literature, follows European politics, and dreams of escaping from his current circumstances. Just as Ethan never fulfills his dream of becoming an engineer, Tom is trapped in his job at a warehouse to support his family. Both of these characters desire a life that is more exciting and fulfilling than the one they currently have. The difference between Tom and Ethan is that while Ethan stays with Zeena in Starkfiled, Tom leaves his family in St. Louis. Ethan is a highly passive character, relying
There are numerous similarities between Jeffrey and Harris. One similarity that they shared was that they both were slaves being sold. Jeffrey was sold for a total wage of one thousand, three hundred and ten dollars. Secondly, both men were very determined. Harris was determined to escape slavery no matter the consequences, and Jeffrey was determined to stay in slavery as long as Dorcas, his girlfriend, could be with him. On the other hand, these two men
Similarities. Differences. Arnie From Born Worker by Gary Soto and Tom From The Adventures of Tom Sawyer have both of these. Born Worker is a story about how Arnie convinces his cousin to go into business with him, but doesn't play fair. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom manipulates the neighbourhood boys into doing his chores for him, and spends his Saturday relaxing in the sun. Tom and Arnie have similarities, but they also have differences that set them apart from one another.
One similarity they have is that they both have friends. Keet has Chip and Dwight, page 54. Tomi’s friends are Billy, Mose, and Rico. Another thing they have in common is that they are both persistent. When Keet told Tomi to not mess with the boat, that made Tomi bring up the boat for sure. Page 46, “... mess with that boat, you messing with me.” “That did it. The boat was coming up.” Finally, they both did or doing something bad. Keet shot at Tomi in the jungle. Tomi isn’t suppose to bring up the boat because he might go to jail for that. These are some similarities between Keet and
These characters are akin in that they are determined. Arnie determined in a way that he is never going to let anyone get into his way. In the contrary Tom is determined in a way where he is not going anything to tempt him. As Denis Waitley said, “Determination gives you the resolve to keep
Tomi and Keet are similar because In chapter 3 it says that Tomi and Keet use to be friends! They use to watch Papa’s pigeon soar in the air. Both Tomi and Keet both had thoughts about going to the naval academy. Tomi and Keet are also similar because they both have goals and they are doing everything they can to accomplish them. Such as Tomi wants to free his papa and grandpa from prison.
All the characters are different, but they all have a few key similarities. Tom wanted to be independent and noble, but Sal and Lex both wanted to understand, from Sal wanting to know about her mom the Lex craving to know her situation and safety. This shows how there can be connections between books that do not have the same plot, story, characters, or even timeline as others.
They are both the children of 70s radicals. Tom’s parents were both college-educated and grew up in an academic environment. Tom’s mother was as radical as anyone and instilled that activism in Tom from an early age. She was someone who was politically aware due to her experiences in Kenya. Zack’s mother was a grad student of the University of California Irvine while his dad was a member of a legendary chicano art movement. The movement was basically Mexican americans who were politicized during the 60s. His father was part of the Los Four which was a latino group of artists that big shows in the early 70s. He was somebody who was conscious of what was going on and made a distinct effort to come and try an change things. Both, interestingly,
It’s interesting to find that they both share vast difference in their characters along the story yet some similarities still bind them together.
