What does it take to make a character stand out? They must be defined through dialogue and action. Author S.E Hinton knows just how to do this. S.E Hinton wrote her novel The Outsiders, to show the story of a society that takes being wealthy to be considered “good”, whereas being growing up poorer, or being known as a Greaser, automatically makes you “bad”. Johnny is one of the main characters in the novel known as a Greaser. This stamps him as an ill mannered, reckless person. However, this could not be farther from the truth. HInton reveals this by telling his story, and showing who he truly is through his actions and dialogue. Johnny's three main character traits are, timidness, quick thinking, and emotionally unstable. He is like this because
“you know what greaser is ? Bob asked. White trash with long hair” “you know what a soc is? I said, my voice shaking with rage.”
How can two characters that have such a similar lifestyle, be so extremely different? In the novel, The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the author proves that such instances happen. Dallas Winston and Johnny Cade have very similar lives, but are completely different people. Johnny is more of a sensitive person and always likes to follow the rules. While Dallas on the other hand, loves to break the laws and do the wrong thing. These two characters are very similar on the inside, but are very different on the outside.

Johnny is represented in the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hilton, published in 1967, as shy and anxious, however is later shown to be brave and courageous, giving himself up to save others. Johnny is seen as honourable and as a protagonist, only committing crimes, such as murder, to protect himself and his best friends. This helps the readers interact with the novel because it shows the stress of being a greaser, and how the greasers have a difficult life, being attacked on the streets and abused at home. This is made evident through his dialogue, action and reactions. It represents the key theme in the novel of brotherhood and the gang because Johnny shares a closer bond with his friends, the greasers, than he does with his parents.

In the novel, The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, there was an incident between rivals that resulted in a death, but should the killer be innocent or guilty? Two Greaser friends, Johnny and Ponyboy, were taking a walk in the park, when a blue Mustang, that carried five rich kids, Randy, Bob, David, and two others, Socs, pulled up by them and hopped out. They had caught Ponyboy by the arm, and dunked his head into the fountain, attempting to drown him, and that is when Johnny had killed Bob. The Outsiders Essay Have you ever been compared to someone? Ever been asked if they are brother or sisters with you ? Well, the character i’m gonna compare and contrast from “The Outsiders” is Johnny Cade. The reason why I picked Johnny Cade is because we both have some similarities. We also have some differences.
“Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold…” ( S.E. Hinton, 148) were the last words of Johnny Cade in the book The Outsiders. I found this character very interesting because of all the hardships he faced and overcame. Johnny, being scarred for life, with his alcoholic father who abused him, and a selfish mother who did not care about him. We saw two different sides of Johnny in The Outsiders. We saw when he was timid and shy near the Socials, and outgoing near his gang. Johnny Cade is a broken boy, from his puppy dog eyes to his small size.
Maria loved Tony from first sight. They saw each other and they both became hypnotized by love’s charm. Maria became very deeply in love with Tony. She invited him to visit her at her shop and thought about him always. When her brother Bernardo died, she became devastated, but eventually decided that her love for Tony was so great that nothing could tear them apart. The quotation said by Emerson, "We are the prisoners of our ideas," burrows itself deeply into West Side Story. This quote means that we are imprisoned in our beliefs and do not allow them to alter. Maria loves Tony so much; she decides she still wants to be with him instead of having any alteration occur between her thoughts or actions.

The ways that they are different is that Johnny was forced to kill someone to save Ponyboy, and Lenny killed several creatures, along with Curley’s wife, by accident.
Johnny's personality changed throughout the book. At the beginning of the book, Johnny was immature. He was too full of himself and did not think before he spoke.
