John P. Parker was born in Norfolk , Virginia in 1827. His mother was a slave and his father was a white man . When John was eight he was sold to a slave agent then he was sold to a slave caravan that took him to Alabama. He was sold again to a physician and he made John into a house servant he was taught to read and write in 1843 John was sixteen he went with the physicians sons to attend college. But John didn't stay that long the physician got scared that John would escape to the north. When he came back he was apprenticed to a foundry and iron manufacturer and learned how to trade plastering. When he tried to escape he was sent back to the physician where he was transferred to New Orleans foundry he worked there for two years. He bought

Lanier Phillips was born March 14, 1923 in Lithonia, Georgia. As a child, he was told by his great-grandmother to never look a white man in the eye or, he'd "get a whipping, or maybe lynched." This was just part of his early life in Georgia. When African-Americans built a school for black children, Yellow River School, the Ku Klux Klan (or KKK) burned it down. It was then he knew he had no future in Georgia. Lanier was sent to live with relatives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1932, to help save him.
