Joe-Lewis, not a name heard often, in fact, if people know boxing, they think he is named after the famous boxer Joe Lewis. However he is not named after the boxer, he is named after our father, Lewis because his nickname was Joe-Lewis, hence Joe-Lewis’s name. His first name is unique just like his middle name, Brown after our great grandfather, Joe-Lewis’s middle name matches his hair and eyes. Small  not a word used to describe his physical appearance anymore, Joe-Lewis is now five foot, six inches tall and slender, his baby fat gone, along with his chubby cheeks, now replaced with strong cheekbones. Not only did Joe-Lewis’s physical appearance change, but his wardrobe changed as well.

Richard Wayne Penniman was born on December 5th, 1932 in Macon Georgia. He was third of twelve children in his family. He was born to Charlie and Leva Mae Penniman into the impoverished area of the city. The Penniman family was very religious, with both Richard's father and grandfather working as preachers in the area. In fact, church is where his singing career began when his parents formed a family singing group called 'The Penniman Singers' that consisted of Richard, his parents, and his siblings. Lanier Phillips was born March 14, 1923 in Lithonia, Georgia. As a child, he was told by his great-grandmother to never look a white man in the eye or, he'd "get a whipping, or maybe lynched." This was just part of his early life in Georgia. When African-Americans built a school for black children, Yellow River School, the Ku Klux Klan (or KKK) burned it down. It was then he knew he had no future in Georgia. Lanier was sent to live with relatives in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1932, to help save him. He went to Main Street Elementary until he joined the army at the age of 18.

Irving Penn was born on June 16th of 1917 in Plainfield, New Jersey and passed away on October 7th of 2009 in New York City, New York.
