My friend J John, who is an author and evangelist, tells of being on an airplane, talking to a lady who was a CEO of a company. She asked him, “And what do you do?” J John said, “Well . . . I work for a global enterprise. We’ve got outlets in nearly every country of the world! We run orphanages; we’ve got hospitals and hospices and we feed the hungry and provide clothes for the poor. We do marriage and guidance counseling. We’ve got schools, colleges, universities, and publishing companies. We look after people from birth to death, and we deal in the area of behavioral alteration!” “Wow!” She said. “I know. It’s amazing, isn’t it?” He offered. “What’s it called?” “It’s called the ‘church.’ Have you heard of it?” He reveals with childlike enthusiasm. …show more content…

He reminds me that I am part of something global, something amazing, and something that has a majestic significance beyond my own small imagination. His explanation reminds me that sometimes in my attitude, I default to a lower version of my work, my interests or myself. People often describe themselves as, “Oh, I’m just a manager of the sports department,” or “I’m just a Starbucks barista,” or “I’m just a little league coach.” They’ve probably lost sight of the extraordinary part of who they are and what they do. J John’s unique way of describing his job reminds me that I can sometimes forget the wonder of the work I’ve given my life to. I’m a dreamer; a dream maker. I need to use his description more often. It’s so easy for me to think I’m just an ordinary guy, doing an ordinary job. That kind of talk allows the relentless fog of mediocrity that overcomes so many of us to impose its boundaries. We forget that we are supernatural people. We act like we are Clark Kent but have forgotten that we have some “Superman” going on inside
