Most of the ideas centered around authority and legitimacy. Later these ideas may have transformed into liberty, progress, tolerance, fraternity, constitutional government, and separation of church and state. The enlightenment was valued greatly, considering that it showed people how to think scientifically, and it also let the world understand different scientific processes. Many European philosophers influenced the thoughts of the founding fathers, who created the foundation of our country. Some of these people are : John Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu and Hobbes. Each of these people have origins in different countries of Europe, such as Switzerland and France. John Locke greatly influenced Thomas Jefferson in the writing of the declaration of independence when he wrote “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of land.” Thomas Jefferson then wrote in the declaration : “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Rousseau believed in a direct democracy where everyone would vote to express the general will and to make the laws of the land, which is what the United States does today. All of the philosophers were interested in a “state of nature”, which is when there is no government, rules, or laws. This could lead to people protecting their lives through conflict on a daily basis, and no one caring about others. All of the philosophers concluded that some form of government is better than none, even if it means giving up some rights by agreeing to a social contract.
Thomas Jefferson and John Locke share many similarities in their two writings. In this essay there will make a connection between the two and take a look at how Jefferson may have been or was inspired by John Locke with The Declaration of independence. Two of the main points will be the government's role in the rights of people and what those rights are.

Even though different philosophers approached their goal differently, they achieved it none the less. They all approached their goal differently due to their different upbringings, their different backgrounds, and most importantly their different environments. A few among the many enlightened thinkers were Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Baron Do Montesquieu, and Jean Jacques Rousseau. Both John Locke and Thomas Jefferson believe that people have certain natural rights and that it is the government’s job to protect these rights. Their documents were both written for revolutions, although they were two very different revolutions. Ultimately, a revolution in Europe influenced Locke to write the Second Treatise on Government. The Second Treatise on Government was important because it influenced the way many later philosophers would view government. One philosopher influenced by Locke was Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence used the same philosophy as Locke’s Second Treatise on Government, but it also held great significance in that it was the first time a group of colonies had successfully separated from a world power like Great Britain.
In 1689 a man named John Locke enlightened our world by introducing new ideas such as people being able to govern themselves. Then 1776 a man named Thomas Jefferson wrote a document called The Declaration of independence. This declaration had many ideas of John Locke's paper this raises the question did Thomas Jefferson plagiarized John Locke's ideas. There are many similarities and a few differences between John Locke's ideas and Thomas Jefferson’s ideas such as they both wanted their leaders to help people and not control. Some more examples was that they both believed in unalienable rights, wanted to form governments to help people, and finally if the government were to fail in its job of governing the people then the people had the right to revolt against the government.
