Neil Gaiman once said “ A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.” When I first heard this quote I immediately thought of the unpredictable book An Abundance of Katherines by John Green. This book is about a guy named Colin Singleton who has been a child prodigy since the age of two and only dates girls with name Katherine. After being dumped by the nineteenth Katherine or K-19 he finds himself on a road trip with his lazy, overweight, and sometimes muslim best friend Hassan. On this roadtrip, Colin tries to solve what he calls The Theorem of Katherine Predictability so he can hopefully find his soulmate and have a purpose in life. During their adventure they meet this girl named Lindsey Lee Wells who becomes a close friend with the boys, and little does Colin know there is much more to life than a girl …show more content…
To begin with, there is a depth to every character. For example after reading the book you will know very much about Hassan, like how he was homeschooled until the ninth grade and his father never went to college but is making over $100,000 salary, you will even know Hassan’s favorite T.V. show, and he isn’t the main character in the story either. By the end of the story it will feel like you have known the characters sense you were little, so these characters will help readers connect to the book. Also, the characters aren’t stereotypical. For example, Colin, a child prodigy since the age of two has been praised by his parents, talked about in articles, and even won $100,000 on a gameshow. You expect him to be confident and independent but actually he is the complete opposite, he needs someone in his life to tell him he has a purpose. These character twists intrigue readers to find out what happens to the characters, so they have to keep on reading. The depth and personalities to the characters in the book are even more of a reason to read this
Characters play a major role in ensuring that the novels can be read and comprehended. However, the success of a novel is dependent on the quality of characterization and whether they will attract the
It allowed me to connect with the author’s thoughts and thoroughly understand the story or novel. Because of this, it caused me to enjoy reading, which I was not particularly fond of before.
In 2014, John Green’s second book, An Abundance of Katherines, was banned by the school superintendent at Highland Park, Texas, Independent School District. It is stated that the novel has been banned for its sexual content. According to Amanda from BannedYA, the novel was banned, because the parents “did not think it was appropriate for their children to read in class”. When the book was banned by the superintendent, the action received national attention, causing the superintendent to restate the book. Due to this, in February 2015, the school district trustees approved policy changes on how the district selects books and handles parents’ objections.(Titus) The arguments against the book were that the sexual scenes and curse words are not
What is it about a book that keeps one reading? One continues to read a book when it is interesting and if they can make a connection to it. But, what makes a book interesting? There are many ways authors attract their readers. Authors use different techniques like, circle chronological order style, evoking strong emotions, and creating complex characters to shock and lure their readers.
Character are often times really the only thing that needs to be interesting for the story to be worth while. Veritably, reading about experiences through a character is far more engaging than directly being told advice or analysis. That is because narratives are almost always based in inherently human ideas/feelings and that is what most take and/or want to take away when they read one. A great example is “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, where the main focus is the guilt the narrator feels after his actions towards his brother. It’s about a boy who has a brother with health problems, who he’s trying to fix into someone he won’t be ashamed of or have to constantly look after. Throughout the story one can see how the narrator
All of these factors in the stories are important to the plot. Little similarities appear between each book, yet they share the similarity of being relatable. The reason why these books are so popular, to teens in particular, is because people can relate to the feelings and emotions of everyday people. Their experiences might not be as dramatic, but feeling like an outsider or like you have to just go along with what people tell you to do is a common feeling that most people share. Feelings are probably one of the most universal things that people feel. These differences and similarities make the stories what they
That is because the storyline of the book is easy to follow and keeps you on the edge of your seat while you read, especially when the children are involved in the storyline. Page 37 is a good example of this because that is when the children are kidnaped you don’t know what will happen next. Also because you can form a connection with the characters of the story very easily. Such as with the main character Nancy because everyone at one point in their life has been wrongly accused of something they didn’t do just like Nancy was on page 66 of taking her children. Throughout the story one of the recurring aspects of the story that was very intriguing were the clues the author left in the book for the reader to solve who the kidnaper was. An example of these clues can be found on various pages but one of the best clues can be found on Because this book is not the usual genre I read, it took me awhile to get with the direction the book was heading to but once I did I enjoyed the book very much and I would definitely put it up in my list of top 10 book
Ray Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451 and various other short stories once said, "Plot is no more than footprints left in the snow after your characters have run by on their way to incredible destinations," and his observation is a perfect analysis of the importance of characters in fiction. The actions of characters in stories are what guide the most beloved ones. When a story is beloved it is most often driven by love of the characters, but the real question is why do readers love and relate to fictional beings. The types of characters that are most loved in fiction have roots in reality, and traits that make them more relatable to the reader.
- Characters: The main character is developed by what type of book the author is writing. My main character Sugar Mae Cole was developed because of the way she acts toward different characters in the book. And by her personality and sugars personality is sweet kinda like her name and she is polite. She is always trying to brighten the other characters up especially her mom Reba. She has a different personality that any of the other characters and connects with them in a different way that is what makes her the main character. she is cautious and also believes in people and things like her mom. Her mom Reba is about to give up but Sugar still believes in her and she believes she and her Mom will get a home and things will
Another aspect that attracted me to novel was they way it was written. Although the book did have separate chapters, the way that it is written make the novel flow as if it was one big paragraph. There are moments in the story where characters converse but speech is not noted by quotation marks or paragraph breaks. This is a type of writing that even the most experience authors fail to accomplish, but Cole made it seem so effortless. Such a style of literature is bound to keep readers interested. If felt as if the reader was reading a diary versus a novel. Included in the novel includes forms of
The result of these characteristics give each story suspense and mystery, leaving the readers wondering what each character will do next and what further action will take place. Characters hold a primary role in determining the outcome of a story, which is the reasoning behind the many similarities and differences among literary characters. Also, a clear example is the similar plots with two completely different outcomes. Once the audience understands a character, they are capable of building on their existing knowledge to foreshadow events or understand the text more logically, which is evident when reading these
The characters, or should I say people, were a big part of the story. For most of them we knew them from the start until the end. I especially liked how they showed both sides of each person, the good
Not only do the roles of the characters compel a reader, they also illustrate the
The magical elements in this story make the story more interesting. They give it new meaning and a new life. They make the story fun to read. Without the magical elements, the characters would have a normal life and not many exciting things would happen. These elements take a person to a different world and make them forget about his or her own for a while. They open a door to something new and possibly make us look more closely at certain things.
Another factor which I believe has led to the novels success is that while reading, the reader wishes that they could live in this fantasy world created by Rowling where life is anything but ordinary. The novels make the reader somewhat desire a life like the one led by the characters of the novels, like going to a school to learn wizarding, always having extraordinary things happen and just being at Hogwarts seems like an unequaled joy for some. These novels have the ability to reignite the long lost imaginations of adults, and keep the imaginations of children strong.
