The North also had more to offer because they were becoming more urban which meant better jobs, transportation and growing middle-class. Ann always knew she wanted to travel and speak to other slaves

Her parents were artists who moved the family to Italy where every summer Francesca, and her brother Charlie, were taken out of schools and put into new schools for two years (The Woodman). Charlie had diabetes, which could be fatal; as a result the parents gave more attention to him than to Francesca which allowed her more freedom (The Woodman). Betty and George Woodman went to art museums frequently and brought Charlie and Francesa along and handed them notebooks to leave them alone while they looked at art (The Woodman). This was the time in which Francesca learned to appreciate and like art. She even started drawing self portraits (The Woodman). As a result of the lack of attention she received at home, she made the decision to go to boarding school to get away from the family (The Woodman).
