Suicide is a waste of time. It’s stupid. There’s no point because you don’t gain anything from it because you’re dead. However, people don’t see this and they do this without thinking about what they already have. It’s mostly the teens that jump into the arms of death, and this is usually because of peer pressure, grades, suffering from loss, anxiety, etc. One novel show an example of a realistic stressed individual. In the article “Suicide” on the Opposing Viewpoints website they state “Each year, about thirty thousand people in the United States commit suicide” (“Suicide”).I chose the theme of violence from the novel Kindred, written by the author Octavia Butler. A specific issue that arose within this theme is the act of suicide. Webster Dictionary defines suicide as the act of intentionally causing one 's own death. Suicide is the escape route out of many situations their victims can’t fight. Suicide goes back in history all the way to BC time. The novel, Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, should not be censored from schools due to it showing the problem with bullying, it speaks up about teens dealing with depression and shows the side effects that suicide can have on other people.

Imagine someone’s best friend dies. Later this person discovers that their friend commit suicide. Envision this person’s feelings and all of the painful thoughts and memories going through their mind. This person probably feels intense sadness and maybe even betrayal. Do not forget the suicide victim’s parents. Their own child felt worthless enough to kill themselves. The students at the victim’s school have confusion, start rumors, and gossip. Her first thought and reason for committing suicide she mentioned is that “for the longest time, from almost day one at this school, it seemed that [she] was the only one who cared about [herself].” She has begun to feel that nobody cared, because she kept her feelings to herself and did not communicate distress to other people, so she “tended to set in motion a cycle of neglect.” Furthermore, there are many feelings which contribute to commit suicide in the adolescent ages and some of these are also experienced by the protagonist Hannah, namely the feelings of lonely, hopeless and helpless. A research proves that Hannah was “faced [with] an acute stress, such as the break-up [with Justin and Clay], feeling of abandon, may contemplate suicide as an acceptable option” and suffered from depression, which “especially if it leads to a sense of hopelessness, may increase the likehood of the person initiating a suicidal act.”

Suicide is the leading cause of death for people ages 10-24. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined. Phoebe Prince and Hannah Baker are both apart of those devastating statistics. Hannah Baker is a character in Jay Asher’s book Thirteen Reasons Why whereas, Phoebe Prince is a girl from South Hadley, Massachusetts. These two girls’ stories are very much alike, but there are also very different.

In Jay Asher’s suicide novel Thirteen Reasons Why, Hannah Baker has committed suicide and explains the reason for her deathly actions in a series of recorded cassette tapes. Her death is a result of miscommunication among her peers and pressure from the crazy events of teenage lives happening beyond her control. The author invites the reader to participate in a dramatic page-turning experience by alternating between Hannah’s powerful words and the reactional narrative of Clay, the protagonist. Hannah selects and targets individual people that had a negative effect on her life in an intimidating, shocking, and emotional manner. There are certain risk factors as well that can add to the development of suicide ideation. One risk factor is being diagnosed with a disability, especially a learning disability. So right off the bat, this puts them more at risk to engage in this behavior. Another risk factor is lack of social support which is very much relevant to students with disabilities. They often have fewer school social supports and face social isolation. The final risk factor provided in the article is depression. People with disabilities are proven to be more susceptible to depression, actually 50% of students who are eligible for special education services could be diagnosed as depressed. Clay thought, “ ‘No, I can’t believe it. Hannah Baker killed herself.’ ”(Asher 7). Most people know someone who killed themselves, like Clay knew Hannah and Jay Asher's relative attempted suicide. Teens so often are suicidal and attempt suicide as a call for help from others. They have no intention in dying they are just trying to cry out for help from anyone that will listen. Domestic Violence can negatively affect the ones involved, but it mostly affects the kids who witness it. Divorce is another factor that affect people, however, some kids carry the blame on themselves and they feel responsible about the divorce which can lead them to depression and ultimately suicide.

The poem “Suicide Note” is a letter to the young girl parent. This poem allowed us to see behind the reason why someone would take their life. While reading this poem I found out the reason why she took her own life. She felt like she was a disgrace to her family because everything she did was a failure. So she wrote this note basically to apologize for all the disappointment she had put upon her family.

Personally, I think that bullying alone is not the only case why people commit suicide bullying is very common. Many people think that bullying is the main reason why people commit suicide.
