In the novel Jasper Jones, many themes and values are explored that I strongly oppose, such as the abuse of power held by those in positions of authority. In the novel, Jasper comes to Charlie with “…His left eye like a cricket ball. A shiny bulb with a single seam…a dried cut on his lip.” It presently comes to light that the shire president and constable were the ones that inflicted Jasper to this physical torture. This is horrendous behaviour from somebody with the authority to protect the people of Corrigan, and shows a negligence of their power. Later in the novel, we discover the shire president has abused and sexually assaulted his own daughter, impregnating her and ultimately becoming the reason for her suicide. His feigned surprise
Power is the ability to control. This book is about Tom Robinson accused of rape. Tom is black and is going through an arduous time period for people of color. In this case Tom ended up being guilty.
John Paul Jones was born in the year of 1772 in Scotland. When John Paul Jones first started his career when he was at the age of 13. When John Paul Jones reached the age of 21 he was a captain of a ship sailing between West Indies and the British ports. When John Paul Jones joined the continental navy during the American Revolution he had great success in international waters. While John Paul Jones was the commander of a heavily armed vessel call the Bonhomme Richard, John Paul Jones gave one of his famously known quotes saying “He had not yet begun the fight” During a fight with a British warship called Serapis.
In the beginning of the novel, Cole Mathews behaves cruelly when he becomes emotional. For example, when the narrative begins, we learn that he is in serious trouble for beating a kid named Peter Driscal up, because Peter divulged the truth about the boy robbing a hardware store. Later on, our main character is sitting in a detention cell as a consequence of his actions and becomes exasperated over not getting what he wants. Hence, he throws an outburst of violence. “[Cole’s] rage ignited. [He] jumped to his feet and stormed across the cell. He tipped over his metal-framed bed and started hitting the wall harder and harder. Soon blood from his scraped knuckles smeared the concrete.” (Mikaelsen 25). During those episodes, the protagonist and oddly enough the antagonist becomes very displeased, but also very scared and sad.
Another character in the book that the Mockingbird represents is Atticus Finch. Atticus is the father of the main character, Scout Finch. Atticus is the man that decides he would risk his entire reputation to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus knows that he would not be able to win the trial, but he is so kind-hearted that he goes on to defend this trial. On page 194, Lee writes “‘You’ve got everything to lose from this, Atticus.
Courage helps us everyday. It is important to have because it can help you try new things and it can help with many other things. In Jasper Jones, Charlie helps Jasper by going with him to the glade. “Jasper doesn’t respond. He just turns and sets off. I follow.” (Silvey 3) Charlie has many moments where he uses courage and most of the time it helps him or others. He uses it when he goes with Jasper to the glade, when him and Jasper put Laura’s body in the river, and when he goes to Jack’s house.
“More weight” this quote was said by Giles Corey, character from The Crucible. Giles was being pressed to death because he wouldn't tell the court the name of his friend that signed the petition. Giles Corey a 83 year old farmer whose wife was accused of witchcraft. He also got arrested for contempt of court for trying to save his wife. Giles remained mute to confess if he was a witch or not. Giles Corey and I have similar personality traits that being stubborn, hard working, and sarcastic.
Good Afternoon teachers and students, The following texts express how an individuals understanding of belonging can quickly be changed by the people and place around them. “Jasper Jones a novel written by Craig Silvey”, it is a short story of a boy named Charles Butkins and the events that occurred because he helped Jasper Jones mask the death of Laura Wishart. “Australia by Ania Walwicz”, is attacking the people of Australia in the form of a poem, because of their point of views and attitudes in life. She also hates Australia itself because the people are not welcoming, this is the main point of this poem.
True Grit by Charles Portis In True Grit Portis conveys to the reader how strong willed and brave young Mattie Ross is from the outset. He also uses contrasting characters to heighten other characteristics and to show the how wild the west really was back then. Finally, dialogue is a key part of the plot to emphasize the stubbornness and obstinance of the people near the Indian Territory; with long passages of description to make the reader feel as though they were there.
“At that moment the bird began to flutter, but the wings were uncoordinated, and amid much flapping and a spray of flying feathers, it tumbled down, bumping through the limbs of the bleeding tree and landing at our feet with a thud.” (Hurst 5). This particular quotation is a symbol of the narrator’s brother, which he was exhausted before death just like the ibis in “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst. The narrator has a disabled brother with an abnormally large head, Doodle, who embarrassed and damaged his pride. The narrator’s emotions lead him to teaching Doodle how to walk, run, and swim to achieve an equally talented brother. The narrator’s pride, however, lead to overworking his brother, too tired to flee from the approaching storm, ending in a tragic death. Through these characters’ perspectives, Hurst shows that it is acceptable to be proud of their loved ones, but pride can be harmful to them if people force them into acts that are not in their best interest.
The Hunger Games- By Sarah McCallum Strength comes in many shapes and sizes. The Hunger Games, penned by Suzanne Collins, has a developing theme of strength through the use of many characters, settings and symbols. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, lives in Panem, a post-apocalyptic country with 12 districts that are governed by the Capitol. Katniss coming straight from District 12 with no experience in combat, has a meagre chance of survival upon volunteering for her sister in the annual Games.
Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird” possesses obvious character traits that influence others in a positive manner. Evidence of this can be found in nearly all of the chapters. His positive lessons and reasonings rub off on all of his peers but mostly his kids. Three solid examples of Atticus influencing others in a positive way are how he teaches integrity, empathy and courage.
In chapters 9 and 10, Roger Chillingworth returns and renames himself with a whole new identity. He made Hester swear to secrecy she wouldn’t reveal whom he was. He reintroduces himself to the town as being a doctor, which was an uncommon profession. Because of the lack of doctors, he was warmly welcomed and wasn’t questioned much.
Courage fluctuates on a spectrum of definitions, from performing a service one disdains for the sake of another, to jeopardizing one's freedom for the eradication of racial segregation. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee investigates the racist undertones prevalent in the trial of Tom Robinson, an African-American man who was erroneously prosecuted for the accused rape of Mayella Ewell, a Caucasian teenage girl. Atticus Finch, a widowed father of two and impartial lawyer, is tasked with the vindication of Tom Robinson; despite the odium and biased ridicule he receives from others. Through Atticus’s character, Lee defines courage as an unwavering resolve. Consequently, one will find themselves constantly defending their perspective
Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that fear and courage was not in the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” This quote relates to Harper Lee’s Atticus Finch. In the novel, Atticus Finch is a symbol of bravery in Maycomb. His children, Scout and Jem, learn from him, and that is what causes them to lose their innocence, and focus on how people are acting in Maycomb towards racism. Atticus defends a black man, named Tom Robinson, even though people that supported his opponent, Bob Ewell, were mean to him. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus portrays the theme of courage in the face of evil through defending Tom Robinson, the confrontation with Bob Ewell, and when the men came to hurt to Tom Robinson in his jail.
After her classmates carried out a cruel prank on their teacher, Jodee who was friends with them at the time felt guilty of not doing anything to stop it. Accepting their rude behavior towards others and moving on without standing up for the victims of their cruelty was the only way to stay in the popular group of students. Being the bystander who meant no harm but never did anything to stop the bullying, Jodee felt responsible for the actions of her, “friends” as if she was the main bully herself. Not knowing what to do, she asked her grandmother for advice, and that is who the quote is derived from. Jodee’s conversation with her grandmother was an important part of the book. In a subtle way, it explained one of the reasons why Jodee always tried to treat everyone with respect. She did not want to do anything that she knew she would regret in the future.
