William Allen, James Allen’s father set off for America to find a job and sent his family his income (An Unrewarded Genius). Then things took a brutal twist as William was robbed and eventually murdered before he could even settle down. In result of this, James Allen had to drop out of all schooling at an age of fifteen to help support his family (An Unrewarded Genius). He worked three short years until he decided to devote his life to literature (Plantinga). Before his literary career was cut short due to death, he wrote nineteen books within a nine year period. He served in the House of Representatives from 1875 to 1879 and in the state Senate from 1881 to 1882. He was elected municipal judge of Jacksonville and was one of the first African Americans to have this honor. He educated free slaves at a college by the name of Edward Waters College.
