The controversy around Carson McCullers’s position as a writer begins with the publication of her first novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and continues till the publication of her fifth novel, Clock Without Hands. McCullers is very sensible with the particularity of the South, say, there is such a thing as southern literature. Her representations of the Southern town are oppressed by constant heat. Heat generates one after another lifeless, loveless and sexless closed spaces and humans. Perhaps not surprisingly, this group of people “appears […] as either a physically or mentally deformed figures” (Spiegel, 428). Carson McCullers is unique among novelists in respect to the attention of the freakish figure, or such a phenomenon permeating in

The Hills Like White Elephants, by, Ernest Hemingway is a very interesting story. Although this story seems like it was written a long time ago the American and the girl who are the main characters in the story are going through a problem many teenagers or young adults are going through. Chris Mccandless was a man that many would call crazy or maybe even immoral. He left everything to live in the wild and become “one with nature”. He had determination, a strong mindset, fearlessness and courage. I believe that my life and the life of Chris Mccandless are not similar in any aspect. In fact I wish that my life was more like his and that I had the drive and determination to do what he did.
