Integrity is the personal choice to be honest and hold oneself to moral and ethical standards. People of high integrity exhibit social conscious and compel themslelves to be truthful in their personal and professional responsibilities (Killinger, 2014). Integrity is a valued characteristic in nearly every society. People who act with integrity are well liked, and enjoy positive outcomes through having strong relationships with others. (Peterson, 2004) These relationships are successful because of their ability to create cooperative alliances, and receive social support (Hodgins, 1996).

In his study university students participated in surveys that evaluated this. The researchers found symptoms of social anxiety were positively correlated with recall of academic cheating. Also, students who placed more importance on their moral identities recalled significantly fewer instances of cheating compared to students who had lower importance on their moral identity. The findings suggest that students are less likely to cheat in school when they place greater emphasis on their moral identity and are less sensitive to social evaluation (Wowra, 2007).
Students may try to rationalize academic dishonesty through various methods. In one study, the researcher explored the reasons given by college students for cheating during scholastic examinations. In the study, most of the participants defined cheating as taking reminder notes into an examination, getting help during the exam, or theft of knowledge. The students believed the likelihood of cheating was found to be high, specifically with preparation of cheating materials before the examination.
