Homework, homework, homework feels more like stress, stress, stress to students. Specifically, unnecessary stress due to unnecessary homework. Homework curses the lives of students everywhere, destroying lives and happiness. Homework looms over students heads, waiting to strike in each class that it is assigned. Homework is not beneficial because students do not have time for it and teachers assign it based on amount and not overall quality.
Students do not have enough time for homework. Nowadays students have jobs, extracurricular activities, and family obligations on top of going to school for seven hours a day. According to John Rhodes and Jan Wilson, in “Student’s Perspectives on Homework,” they argue students may end up coming home late from sports and feel “unmotivated to complete their assigned homework tasks.” Going from school, wearing students down mentally and then going to a sport, wearing students down physically, students are completely exhausted and decide that the homework can be put on the backburner. They either do not do it or give little effort, just to get it over with. Rhodes and Wilson add that students “become stressed from the volume of homework” and feel they “need down time to relax after attending school.

Even from the students perspectives homework is not beneficial for their learning. Igf they do not believe it will help them what makes them motivated to do the homework. Rhodes and Wilson later state, “Some teachers and entities say that teachers assign too much homework, that teachers expectations or directions are unclear, and that students give to many handouts.” These statements argues there is too much homework that students can’t even complete because they do not understand what must be completed or that they don't know how to, making homework
After spending most of their time in school, students are expected to complete even more work, seems almost ridiculous. Homework is taking time away from students other activities. In the book, “The Case Against Homework,” by Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish, they state how homework, “robs children of their sleep, play and exercise time need for proper physical, emotional, and neurological development.” Homework is no different than a towel placed in water. It soaks up the time from other activities A study done by the Brown Center found an
Students all across the country are suffering from the same dilemma, homework! It may not be seen as a dilemma or even a problem but rather as something helpful to the learning process. From a student’s point of view, however, homework is one of the top causes of stress throughout high school. With the expectation to take about 6 to 7 classes a day, the amount of homework each teacher assigns starts to pile up and the workload gets overwhelming. No one wants to sit at a table wrecking their brain trying to figure out how to complete something they have no interest in. Is a student’s willingness and ability to learn not important? They can both be effected by the amount of stress that a huge workload of homework can cause. This is why teachers should decrease the amount of homework they assign and modify it to make it more balanced and challenging yet interesting and not time consuming. The amount of stress students face would diminish and students would still be learning.
As a high schooler, you get lots of homework which can easily cause you stress, but others like parents have another understanding of homework because they think it gives their children something to do besides sitting and watching the television. Also teachers tend to give out homework for the benefit of your learning skills or just of what you learned on that school day in general, which isn’t always helpful. The harsh thing parents and teachers don’t realize is the agonizing pain and life consuming of having large amounts of homework which causes us to have negative consequences.
High school students feel more stress than working adults, and children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative results can be improved by reducing the homework load.
Homework is defined as tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried out during non-school hours. The most common purpose of homework is to have students practice the material already presented in class also to reinforce learning and ease comprehension of specific skills. Homework has been a debatable topic for many years. Some researches agree that homework is beneficial while others disagree with that statement. Further research was done on how homework gives students stress. Students also have other activities they are involved in. When too much homework is given students become bored and cannot focus this reflects negatively on their progress. Although there are downsides to homework some researchers believe there is good in homework. Homework lets students use what they learned during the day and put it to use. It also keeps students occupied and teaches them how to manage their time.
One reason why students should not have homework is because family time. Families are very busy these days they have a bunch of different things to do. Sometimes it’s hard for students to fit in there homework. The different things they have to do could be ball practice, dance class, and cheer practice. Trying to fit in homework could cause stress on families. The author said in the article “students may feel stress”. “Heavy homework load can negatively affect the performance
Thirdly, homework causes a student to be more pessimistic about school and grades. Students shouldn’t have homework because their grades drop, it causes stress, and their attitude to school becomes negative. First of all, students shouldn’t have homework since students can achieve superior grades. Quoting livescience.com, “ According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, data shows that in countries where more time is spent on homework, students score lower on a standardized test called the Program for International Student Assessment, or PISA. The same correlation is also seen when comparing homework time and test performance at schools within countries.
Homework is a huge role in your education, many kids think that teachers like to annoy kids by giving them homework. They do not look at the positives, homework can result in you getting a job, money, business, etc. Less than one percent of students say, “homework is stressful,” now those students will struggle to be successful. for example, Steve Jobs was successful but he had to struggle to get to his spot. homework can result in learning to take responsibility for his or her actions, teaches you to
Excessive amounts of homework puts stress on students, and can lead to health issues. When homework is loaded onto a student every night in each class, they can become quite overwhelmed. When students have anxiety and stress, their schoolwork is affected negatively. “Stress causes lack of sleep, slipping grades, fatigue, unhealthy eating habits, and many more factors” (“Should Students Get Less Homework”). Approximately 80% of students don’t get the recommended amount of sleep each night. According to a 2006 poll, “At least 28% of students fall asleep in class, and around 22% fall asleep while doing homework” (“Should Students Get Less Homework”). Some students talked about being so overwhelmed with all of the work they got at school, that they became depressed. In some cases, depression can lead to suicide. Students can have nervous breakdowns and can make homework difficult to complete. Also, students
Homework is an educational and easy way to allow teachers to get some extra grades in and get some work out that hasn't been done in class. Not only does it increase grades, it sometimes can grasp a concept that a student might not understand in class. Is it really all that good for students? Despite the fact that homework can help a student understand a topic better in class in some cases, but less homework can prevent stress, health problems, and it also improves the amount of free time a student gets with less homework.
Homework. It is word that haunts anyone from adolescents to adults. Even though it's sole purpose is to educate students, homework seems to have ingrained a negative connotation among everyone in society. There is no doubt that homework has helped students improve their academic performance, but there is a point where it becomes overkill. From personal experience, I found myself drowning in homework in high school. Every night would consist of coming home after practice, and working for an average of four hours on assignments. At the end of high school, I realized I was just doing homework to get it out of the way, and it wasn’t helping me grow academically. I know that thousands of students feel the same way, and it is a true flaw in our education system. Although homework has helped students grow academically, ultimately the effects of too much homework have brought unhealthy amounts of stress, inability for students to explore their interests, and a reduced social skills.
Homework is given to students so that they can retain information learned in school on their own at a later time. However, most homework given is busy work that requires memorization not analyzation. Homework does not require students to analyze their work but rather allows them to quickly transfer information from one sheet of paper from class to another sheet of paper for homework. This information is then lost when they move onto the next subject. the basic idea of homework is not an inherently bad one, however the way homework is being instated in our school systems is wrong. Not only does homework take up time in a students evening, but this time is not well spent! Homework is piled on heavily by each teacher in each subject and the quality
In a survey by the University of Phoenix, they were seeing on average how many hours of night a normal student has. High school students typically have about 18 hours of homework each week, which means that on a daily basis a student has around 3 hours of homework (Lauren H). If students are in school for around eight hours a day, then have three hours worth of homework to do when they get home, it doesn't leave much time to do leisure activities, or to bond with your family and friends. With students not having a lot of free time, it makes it hard to maintain healthy relationships with those around you such as family and even yourself. A study was done to see how homework affects you outside of school. “The results offer empirical evidence that many students struggle to find balance between homework, extracurricular activities and social time” (Parker). Students already have limited time to do activities they enjoy throughout the school day, but after school students should be able to play a sport or go see friends, but often times students have to drop extracurriculars in order for them to be able to get their homework completed. Teenagers should be playing sports and other teenager type activities, and it is not fair to take those opportunities to develop in other areas of life away. Often times, students feel like they have to pick between sports and schoolwork. Many students feel that they have to choose school over working on their other skills such as sports. It is a very difficult task to balance school with other things. Students are pressured to excel in school and sports at the same time, but for some people it just isn't possible to have both. Students should not be forced or feel obligated to choose between school and other
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
As teachers give out so much homework there is limited time to finish work for another class or study for another class. Whenever we actually do the unnecessary work and turn it in, it doesn't always necessarily get graded and it just causes more stress on top of stress. Students are already not getting enough sleep with all six classes that they have. Yet homework is great for students is very helpful for students in their classes, but at the same time they have so much work that they have done in such little time. CNN conducted a study last year showed that the impact of excessive homework on high schoolers included high stress levels, a lack of
