Mikhail uses verbal irony, imagery, and personification to develop the sarcastic tone. The name of this poem is The War Works Hard. The personification in the poem is “ It wakes up the siren, and dispatches ambulances”. It is referring to the war. Mikhail is making human characteristics. Also, Mikhail uses “ The war continues working, day and night” which refers to personification. It is explaining that the war never ends. Mikhail uses this quote to explain reasoning from her past. She was born and raised in Iraq, and war was her daily life style until Saddam Hussein forced her to flee the country because he thought that her writing was a threat and harassment from the government. Mikhail uses verbal irony with the use of “ How magnificent
In Chapter Ten, the Director uses Bernard as an example of an individual who displayed unusual behavior. The director says to the crowd in the Bloomsbury Centre, “...this man who stands before before you here...has grossly betrayed the trust imposed in him. By his heretical views on sport and soma, by by the scandelous unorthodoxy of his sexlife...he has proved himself an enemy of Society, a subverter...of all Order and Stability” (Huxley, 149). The Director is saying that unorthodox behavior destroys society ironically, the director is the one who displays this behavior. Since Huxley uses dramatic irony, the Director does not know that Linda and John would appear and reveal what Bernard would be punished for. When Linda and John come through the door, it reveals the Director's previous monogamous relationship and that he is a father and Linda a mother. The words mother, father, and son bring shame and embarrassment to the director, because everyone laughs hysterically. Another form of irony is that the words mother and father are considered indecent and pornographic in this society, they are taken as a delight in modern society.
Irony, a main focus of Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” gives multiple implications from the story’s title itself and serve as the groundwork for how the story is told sequentially. In the story the main character Rainsford is on a journey to hunt new exotic prey and the setting opens with Rainsford having a discussion with a man named Whitney. Whitney contradicts the way that Rainsford views his love for hunting as only enjoyable for the hunter. As the story progresses the audience learns of the many uses of irony and twists that are presented as Rainsford deals with the internal and external conflicts as he is stranded on a cursed island.
The short story 'Identities' by W.D. is an excellent example of how society tends to judge and stereotype others based on their appearances and where they come from.
O’Connor also uses irony to contribute to the story’s plot and convey its overall theme. The first and most obvious use of irony in this short story is the title, “Good Country People.” She uses this title to describe and express the way society was and how people during that period were perceived. If you were of a particular upbringing you were considered “good country people.” Another example of the author’s use of irony is through the character of Manley Pointer, a traveling bible salesman. His occupation alone gives the reader the impression he is a good honest country boy. The irony of this example is revealed through his encounter with Joy when he exhibits a personality totally opposite of a Christian bible salesman. The fact that Joy,
Using the power point, initiate questions that will lead toward the concept of irony and symbolism
In 1993, David Foster Wallace wrote his essay “E Unibus Pluram”, which addressed the way irony had been incorporated into different types of media within the 20th century. Focusing on two main elements, he starts out by exploring how irony is used in television and then moves on to explore the way irony is used in literary fiction. While he was researching, Wallace found out that the average American household watched about six hours of television every day (Wallace 151).Though today, the average American household only watches about five hours of television every day. The decrease in hours is thought to come as a direct result of the usage of smart phones or other streaming devices and websites (Hinckley). Throughout “E Unibus Pluram”, Wallace brings up the point that as a society, we love the characters and often build a relationship with them. However, the actors who play those characters are strangers to us and those who portray those characters are strangers to our lives and could not be farther than the ‘friends’ we make on the television screen (Wallace 154). This can be understandable as we know that television is false therefore the characters on the screen are also false, but how can we create a friendship with something that is only part of reality during the hour of on air time that it has? It is true that most characters that are written for television are marketed towards the audience of the show, but even though those characters
Alfred A. Montapert made a valid point when he said, “Nobody ever did, or ever will, escape the consequences of his choices.” In many cases, a choice might be whether or not to tell the truth. Supporting Montapert’s idea, “Like the Sun” and “The Censors” are two stories in which honesty plays a major role. In the short story, “Like the Sun”, Sekher is an average man with a strong opinion about honesty. One day a year, he chooses to tell the complete truth, regardless of what may come out of it.
“As Canadian as possible under the circumstances” and “I’m not the Indian you had in mind” both bring up very different, but very real problems in Canada.
The communication skills portrayed was vital as it meant that the nurse was able to answer any questions/concerns that Bethany or her mother had. This was proven effective as the patient’s heart rate was higher than normal on entering the surgery, but by talking to the patient, it helped her to relax. I also noticed that that the nurse made Bethany comfortable by ensuring that she had her own belongings, this included her teddy bear, nightgown and slippers. This relieved her anxiety as she had something familiar in an unknown place which calmed her nerves. There were a few aspects of the care that I was concerned about. Firstly, when we were called to collect Bethany from theatre, the nurse collected her 30 mins after the call had been made. I did not find this appropriate as waking up after a painful surgery, feeling numb can be scary, if I was in Bethany’s shoes, I would want to see my mother or the nurse as soon as I woke up. This was another problem I witnessed, as Bethany’s mother was not on
A strongminded man who has everything going for him, nice job nice car, great friends, etc. comes home every night to a sick mother whom he takes care of after a long day of living a lavish life. His one weakness is his sick mother because she taught him everything. No one, not even his best friend knows about his other life and so that 's how he keeps it. Oh the irony right? Big strong man afraid to live his truth in fear of change and facing his reality. In The Metamorphosis, author Franz Kafka speaks on a character name Gregor, who somehow manages to transform into a hideous insect, and the ironic life he lives. During the story Gregor has a family whom he cares for, a job as a salesman, and a lack in
At the end, the poor miller becomes wealthy because of the diamond inside the fish. This type of literary device is irony, or situational irony in this case, as throughout the story he ends in poverty every time he acquires money. This is the only time the author shows the good side of money, as it brings the poor miller a new lifestyle for himself and his family. The poor miller now lives happily without having to worry about any economic problem, as he now has his own business. He was able to afford a new home and a holiday home, where he encountered the two wealthy men, showed them what he has gained, and showed them that he was truly an honest men. (Anaya 30-31) At the end of the story the poor miller became wealthy and never let money
Oppressions are a sticky topic, and the sheer magnitude of their influence means that a majority of people are impacted by them on a daily basis. However, just because oppressions impact large quantities of people does not mean that we should not be cautious with our use to the term. According to Marilyn Frye, the word oppression is over used and wrongly connected to situations where people are simply uncomfortable or even suffering. She writes, "Human beings can be miserable without being oppressed, and it is perfectly consistent to deny that a person or group is oppressed without denying that they have feelings or that they suffer" (Frye). Thus, when we talk about different oppressions, we must be sure that what we are talking about is actually
Obama uses irony to point out the hypocrisy of division in our current political system. By highlighting the differences between the truth and what politicians say, Obama shows that the divisiveness in politics is both unnecessary and counterproductive. In his chapter about Democrats and Republicans, Obama discusses how “Max Cleveland, the former Georgia incumbent, a triple-amputee war veteran” lost his seat “after being accused of insufficient patriotism, of aiding and abetting Osama bin Laden” (29). Obama includes information about Cleveland’s past as a soldier in contrast to his career as a politician to point out the clear contrariety of Cleveland being deemed unpatriotic. It is a testament to the divided nature of politics that one political
