Inventions in the Industrial Revolution/ Man Vs. Machine During the Industrial Revolution, inventions helped increase productivity and saved time. When people had to do all the work by hand, it took a long time to do basic things. They did not get as much done. The inventions people made, made working more productive and easier. When people made things by hand made they could not make as many product because it took them a long time just to make each one. Therefore they could not sell to many. “Alfred Nobel invents dynamite, which is a safer way to blast holes in mountains or the ground than simply lighting black powder.” (Industrial Revolution Timeline-Softschools). Since that Alfred invented dynamite the miners can make more holes faster and find more coal. This also made it easier for the miners because then they can find the coal faster because they can make holes faster. Dynamite is important in clearing paths to build things such as roads and railroad tracks. (Industrial Revolution Timeline-Softschools). Dynamite helped people with their jobs so much because it helped make a path for someone to make a hole in a mountain. Dynamite made it easier and faster to clear a path for someone instead of them doing it all by hand. Since that the dynamite made it more efficient and safer to blast rocks it made people do more work then they could have done without the dynamite. “Thomas Newcomen invented the first steam engine. It is not very useful yet, but the idea of using steam to make machines go will be important to the Industrial Revolution.” (Industrial Revolution Timeline-Softschools). Thomas Newcomen was the first person to invent the steam engine for other inventions. The steam engine was not that useful at the moment because it was just the engine and not the vehicle itself. “James Watt from Scotland designs a more efficient steam engine.” (Industrial Revolution Timeline-Softschools). Since James Watt designed a more efficient steam engine that can help on later inventions like the steam train and steamboat. James improved Thomas’s inventions is better because it is more efficient and now can be put to use. “One of the most important inventions of the Industrial Revolution, steam engines power the first trains, steamboats, and factories.” (Industrial Revolution Timeline-Softschools). Now that the steam engines have been put to use and are now in the steam train and boat people can get around much faster. Before the steam engine people had to get around by boat or by foot and that had taken a long time to get around but now with the steam engine people can do that way faster and save time.
