Manuel's robbery with a firearm conviction was a first-degree felony punishable by life, Fla. Stat. (1989), which subjected Manuel to sentencing for “a term of imprisonment not exceeding 30 years or, when specifically provided by statute, by imprisonment for a term of years not exceeding life imprisonment,” Fla. Stat. (1989). The trial court chose to sentence Mr. Manuel to a term of “natural life” for this
The art of Fernando Botero is widely known, revered, paraphrased, imitated and copied, For many, his characteristic rounded, sensuous forms of the human figure, animals, still lifes and landscapes represent the most easily identifiable examples of the modern art of Latin America. For others, he is a cultural hero.To travel with Botero in his native Colombia is to come to realize that he is often seen less as an artist and more as a popular cult figure. In his native Medellín he is mobbed by people wanting to see him, touch him or have him sign his name to whatever substance they happen to be carrying. On the other hand, Botero's work has been discredited by those theorists of modern art whose tastes are dictated more
Baca is also sentenced to a mandatory no parole five to ten years, and is sent to Florence prison. The court system works against people like Baca. The brutal reality of the criminal justice system that is the unfairness towards individuals like Baca; specifically if you are poor, male, black or brown. Since Baca is illiterate and uneducated, he becomes an easy target to the court system to blame him with no prove of action. In my cases Baca felt incapable of speaking up for himself, due to being unaware of the laws and his overwhelming feeling of fear. Baca
From the website Four Kids, Four Crimes, I have chosen the case for Jose. He was involved in a gang-related fight which led to loss of a life and severe injuries to another individual. After the incidence, he was tried in an adult court but served his sentence in Juvenile Hall, and later released after the court ruled out that his involvement in the assault was not that high. The sentence greatly helped him change his bad behavior and he has set an example for kids involved in criminal activities that they can change given a chance.
They are supposed to fix us, right? But then this is a punitive setting, those labels — violent and nonviolent — carry a lot of weight in prison as well.” Despite the challenges he faces, his determination and resilience inspire others for a brighter future beyond incarceration. Giovannie Hernandez’s release from prison, shown in the docuseries College Behind Bars, highlights the challenges and struggles of reintegration into society after incarceration, showing his determination to overcome challenges and seek self redemption. Within the series, his struggles upon release were clearly portrayed.
“Aguantando” means holding on. In the very first paragraph we see how important it is for the narrator, Yunior, to hold on to his father’s memory. Yunior lives with his mother (Mami), grandfather (Abuelo) and brother (Rafa). They live in a house where anything of value, including furniture, food, clothing and even Mami’s Bible is stained from a leaky roof. As a Hispanic male, believe me when I tell you there is nothing more sacred than Mami’s Bible in that home. Yet it is clear how important Papi’s pictures are because they’re always in a plastic sandwich bag to keep them dry. It’s also clear that Papi leaving was the
Social science teaches that a person’s self identity is a reflection of that which other people put on the individual, in other words a person’s behavior steams more from what they see of themselves from someone else’s perspective and less from how they see themselves. In the case of the Mexicans, this concept holds true. From that, which has been studied thus far this semester, Mexicans/ Mexican Americans are good examples of this concept. Their sorted past has resulted in a new kind of Mexican American and perhaps a new kind of Mexican. Certainly the Mexicans American’s experience in this country has brought about some changes from the first generation of Mexicans who were born in this country to those who
Teaching cases are written reports, observations, or strategies that describes a specific example, exploring critical issues and develops a solution. Teaching cases may not always be generalized, however certain aspects within the teaching case can provide the reader with valuable learning tools that the reader can apply to similar situations (Taylor & Whittaker, 2003). Discussing cases is an important way that teachers learn and grow within their profession. Taylor & Whittaker ‘believe that creativity and engagement that case discussions demand will help you be better teachers, not just better storytellers’. This report is written to analyze The Case of Jesus Gonzales. When analyzing a case Taylor & Whittaker describe five key components to consider. They are recognizing the problem, reframing the problem, search for alternatives, developing and implementing a plan of action and evaluating the progress.
When one thinks of ancient Indian empires, the Aztecs usually come to mind; the tremendous amount of luck and personal courage in rivaling and ultimately defeating this massive Indian empire in the new-found world should be a huge focus. Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition to achieve wealth in the new-found world. When arriving Cortes found himself situated near a large Aztec civilization located in Mexico City. Cortes eventually gathered a large number of compadres and local tribes together and took over this once thriving civilization. That being said, Cortes and his men did show courage but that alone could not come near to the amount of luck the conquistadors
Jaime Arellano was only sixteen when he decided to get behind the wheel intoxicated, which in return led to the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. In 2007, his case was immediately moved to the adult court of Texas where he was sentenced 20 years in prison. Jaime Arellano, is a Mexican immigrant, which in itself is considered to be in society in the “lowest of standings”. A formerly high school dropout with no money to pay for a highly credibly attorney, the state assigned him one. The attorney could not possibly argue his client’s innocence due to any psychological reasons such as “afluenza”, which resulted in a plea deal of 20 years instead of the 50 he was facing. On the other hand, we have the “afluenza teen” Ethan Couch, who in 2013, killed twice the
