The Case Of Jesus Gonzales Essay

Better Essays

Teaching cases are written reports, observations, or strategies that describes a specific example, exploring critical issues and develops a solution. Teaching cases may not always be generalized, however certain aspects within the teaching case can provide the reader with valuable learning tools that the reader can apply to similar situations (Taylor & Whittaker, 2003). Discussing cases is an important way that teachers learn and grow within their profession. Taylor & Whittaker ‘believe that creativity and engagement that case discussions demand will help you be better teachers, not just better storytellers’. This report is written to analyze The Case of Jesus Gonzales. When analyzing a case Taylor & Whittaker describe five key components to consider. They are recognizing the problem, reframing the problem, search for alternatives, developing and implementing a plan of action and evaluating the progress. In The Case of Jesus Gonzalez, a first grader, Jesus, was gathered with fellow classmates on the reading rug listening to their teacher read a story. As the teacher is reading a man is standing at the door. The man is Jesus’ father picking him up early from school that day. While Jesus is packing up his things to go home, his father speaks Spanish and tells him to hurry up. The embarrassed Jesus screams out and says “Stop talking Spanish in here!”. They leave and the teacher seeks out colleagues who she feels can help her reach out to the Gonzalez’s, who only speak Spanish.
