Imagine living in a world with no individuality. You would have no capability of love, emotion, and imagination. Everyone would be limited to a degree of “sameness”. Parents would not love one another or their children, and you wouldn’t be able to believe what you want to believe simple because you have to believe what has always existed. There would be no opinions, no choices, and no awareness that you were even being limited at all. In her book “The Giver”, Louis Lowry exposes the dangers of individuality in a Utopian Society. The dictionary defines individuality as, “the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind.” Lowry eliminates the power of being an individual completely
Isolation is a very sad thing. There are two ways it can go. Either someone can just deal with its and be lonely and sad, or that person can make it into a positive thing. In the Giver, Jonas is getting very isolated with his community, first Jonas refuse to go back to the annex room, then he stop taking the pills, then the game of war, and last he knows about release. Jonas refuse to go to the annex room because he doesn't want any more memories of pain.
One’s individuality and freedom are questioned when it does not conform to society’s ideals. This is often demonstrated in real life, as well as in popular literary pieces.
A utopian society is supposed to be flawless, but in 'The Giver,' that's not the case. Everyone is identical, and there is no difference. Being different is what makes each of us special and unique. In 'The Giver,' after Jonas has experience the memories he had experience diversity, life another way of looking at things.
In The Giver, Jonas’ world is turned upside down when he is chosen to be the next receiver of his community. The ceremony of twelves is the last ceremony of the day. Jonas waited anxiously for his name to be called; he never hears it. The chief elder has made a mistake. Jonas now has to learn that everything he has been taught was not always the same and it ages him years.
In the book the giver by Lois Lowry, on page 137-145 they use the word love a lot agian and agian. The giver uses it on page 141 he said ¨ You can understand then, that that's what i felt for rosemary… I loved her¨ This is showing the reader that when the giver is telling jonas that he loved her he's really saying that he loves too.

The Giver, a bestselling novel by Lois Lowry, was very popular with teens. It was eventually adapted into a film. Although the film received heavy criticism for failing to adhere to the actual storyline, it still became a theatrical blockbuster. The film changed many scenes and even the characters themselves, including their ages, jobs, and roles in the movie. Many other details were added or changed from the book. There was much more action and even some romance.
The book,”The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is about a young boy named Jonas, who lives with people, that can't see or feel color and emotions. Why can't they experience it? Does society shape individuals? A question that has been asked for decades. There have been many incidents where individuals have been shaped by society usually starting at school or even at work. You could be a victim of being shaped by society and you may not even know it. This school year I’ve read tons of books thanks to Mrs. Collins but thankfully I’ve came across an interesting book that actually has to do with society shaping an individual.
Conformity, most people do not like it and most people do. There would be a time where you would want to be the same as someone is probably if you and your best friend wear the same exact outfit and you two might say, “Twinsies”. Do you ever wonder what it would be like if everyone dressed the same as you and not just one person? In a dystopian novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, everyone is forced to live the same way. Everything in the Community is the same. For instance, their clothing, skin tones, the size of their family, house, everything is identical. That is just how their community works. If everyone in the world lived the same like The Giver, society would not have originality and diversity. Just imagine living in that world instead of your world here where everyone is different.
Without diversity in a community, it is harder to have best friends and learn team-building skills when there is a lot in common with the other people. “His childhood, his friends… all that seemed to be slipping away from him.” This quote was from when the Giver gave Jonas the memory of color. Once he had that his knowledge grew, this should be in every one´s thought because if everyone knows just one part of the world how will people discover the rest. How is there going to be different personalities and races, when everyone does the same thing.
A sprinkling of young, attractive actors and actresses, one heaped teaspoon of 'Divergent', another of 'The Hunger Games' and a dash of 'The Truman Show'. Bake for ninety seven minutes. Ice with Meryl Streep. Liberally.
There are three words that are used for a tool for social control in The Giver. These three words are used in their community that promote or conceal the words we have that now in the community. Those three words are assignment, comfort object, and newchild. An assignment is given to you, and you can’t go without an assignment in Jonas’s community. A comfort object is given to all newchildren in their community, but taken away when they become older, and a newchild is what we call as a newborn. These three words are different than what we would call them, but their meanings are similar.
