The Giver Film Review / Paige Morgan
A sprinkling of young, attractive actors and actresses, one heaped teaspoon of 'Divergent', another of 'The Hunger Games' and a dash of 'The Truman Show'. Bake for ninety seven minutes. Ice with Meryl Streep. Liberally.
Based on the novel published in 1993,'The Giver' (directed by Phillip Noyce) is a film about a Utopian turned dystopian society, where the world as everyone knows it is colourless and emotionless. The story centres on main character Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) a teenage boy who lives in a seemingly ideal monochromatic world, where everybody has a job assigned to them when they reach the age of sixteen. Jonas is assigned the difficult and demanding job as the Receiver of Memory. He learns the ways of his new job with his teacher of sorts The Giver (Jeff Bridges) and he learns that the world he has grown up to know all to well is but a lie. Jonas discovers the truth of the real world, and learns of the dark and deadly past of his community. Jonas sets out to escape this false world so he can bring back the real world that is so far gone. The film reminds us of how privileged we are having a world full of emotion and colour.

is it is Utopian to Dystopian society? the teenage romance? how it is set in the future? The Giver is nothing new. The Giver follows the theme of a utopian turned dystopian society theme we all know too well from films such as 'Divergent', 'The Hunger Games' and 'The Truman Show'. The combination of the three all to common themes has turned what could have possibly been a unique film into one that gives that deja-vu feeling of “haven’t i seen this before?”. While 'The Giver' is the godmother to the ever popular young adult dystopian novels, it's time of release while dystopian society films are at an all time high has rendered the plot of the film to appear dull and uncreative to
My first reason on why I think the giver is a dystopia because they don’t get to choose their jobs. They have ceremony every year and when you turn twelve they get assigned a job. People will get assigned a job that they might not like, but there is a chance that they could get a job they like. For example on page 60“ in a firm, commanding voice she announced, ‘Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver Of Memory”. Jonas was nervous at first about his job because the chief elder has described his job as painful and that the pain was “ indescribable.” Later he then just wants to be a regular child instead of being the Reciever.
The Giver is a dystopia because they have release. According to document C it reads “This morning we celebrated the release of Roberto,” she told him.” This quote shows that The Giver is a dystopia because it says that they celebrated a release. It shows that they released/ killed an old person. According to document D“To his surprise, his father began very carefully
Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, offers a thought provoking, well written story, because it changes the perspective of anyone who dares to read it to. Lowry places her novel, at some point in the future when mankind has gone away with changes and choices in life. She forces readers appreciate, or at least re-think the world they live in today. Her novel presents a fully human created environment where people have successfully blocked out conflict, grief, and individuality. Each person follows the same routine every day. Failure comply with standards, to be different, means death. Jonas, the main character, finds himself trapped in this world.
“Our problem right now is that we’re so specialized that if the lights go out, there are a huge number of people who are not going to know what to do. But within every dystopia there’s a little dystopia.” (Margaret Atwood) In 1992, Lois Lowry had was inspired by her father’s memory loss to write a novel. In The Giver, 12-year old Jonas is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory but throughout his training, he struggles understanding whether the community he lives in is a utopia or dystopia.
There are many types of communities; such as, a school community, but The Giver’s community is quite unique. In The Giver written by Lois Lowery and produced by Nikki Silver, the community is dictated by the chief elder. The movie and novel have few similarities and a numerous amount of differences; such as, the characters, jobs, and especially the interactions. To begin with, The Giver’s main characters are very complex. Jonas is the main character in both stories of The Giver, he is also known as The Receiver since he is The Giver’s successor.
The Giver is a 2014 film directed by Phillip Noyce. The film is solely based on a novel with the same name by Lois Lowry. It talks about a teen, Jonas, living in a society where none of them is different. Each individual in their society is equal. Labels like popular, losers, winners, and as such does not exist within their society. They have created the new definition of fairness.
The novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is an everlasting story that shows the importance of individuality. This novel is about a young boy named Jonas who was elected as the Receiver of Memories, a person who is given the memories from the world that existed before their current society, Sameness. In this society there is no individualism. People can not choose who to marry, or what they want to do for a living. Over time Jonas becomes more and more wise, and realizes that the supposedly perfect community actually has some very dark and negative aspects. The author, Lois Lowry is a 76-year-old writer who focuses her writing on helping struggling teenagers become individuals. Lowry had a very tragic childhood. After both of her parents were
Could our society be any similar or different to “The Giver”? In modern day society the millennials have pushed and worked for change, while the society in “The Giver” is based around the idea of sameness. The dystopian society can be compared and contrasted to our modern day society in many ways. According to the article ‘What Millennials Want From Work and Life”, “ Millennials are pushing for change in the world”.
The Giver, published in 1993, is an American, young adult, dystopian, science fiction novel. This is the twenty-second book Lois Lowry has written. According to Marie C. Franklin, Children’s Literature: Debate continues over merit of young-adult fare (The Boston Globe, February 23, 1997, p. G1), some reviews have criticized The Giver for lacking originality. Set in the future, the society described in The Giver has eliminated war, pain, hatred, and fear. It is in the point of view of an eleven-year-old boy named Jonas.
This book is about a boy names Jonas. Jonas lives in a futuristic society where there is no pain, fear, war, and hatred. There is also no prejudice, since everyone looks and acts basically the same, there is very little competition. They have also eliminated choice.
The Giver by Lois Lowry is a Utopia because no one is ever starving, no one really feels pain, and they can’t choose wrong. Throughout our world I have seen many people on the sides of streets having no food, no home, and no family with no one helping them to have a better life. I have also seen people helping the homeless and shelters but in this book they don’t need to do that because everybody already has a home and food. Plus they don’t have to ask for money and food, they already have it.
Imagine a world without love or color. Jonas the protagonist in The Giver he ran away and left comparing his community to our society. In our society we aloud to love whoever we want and we free to love. In jonas society love is a word that is prohibited no longer said for example abandoned no longer mentioned because they don't know what it means.
How would it feel if this world didn’t let people have choices, didn’t let people share, or if they didn’t let people celebrate birthdays, holidays, or just celebrate anything? Well that’s what it was like for Jonas in The Giver. Jonas lives in the future in a community where The Giver is the only one who knows everything, but soon all that changed for Jonas. He became the the community 's new Receiver of Memory, and soon Jonas learns the terrible secrets of this “utopian” community. Later on as he learns some more about the community’s secrets he makes a plan to leave the community, and to take Gabe with him so he wouldn’t get released.(which means they die, but the community doesn’t understand that) In this book choices, sharing, and celebrations would have made The Giver community more positive.
The Giver is, a novel by Lois Lowry, is about a boy named Jonas who lives in a futuristic society which focuses on “sameness”. This society is very organized, everyone has the same clothes, birthday, gifts, and food. No one is unique and no one makes their own choices. They live in a world with limited emotions, no love, no happiness. No one gets to make choices, no one takes risks. Lois Lowry is trying to warn her readers that if each person was the same, life would be dull and boring. Each person needs to be unique and make their own choices.
You might think that there are many problems in our society. Hate, war and pain are just a couple of these things. Have you ever thought about a society where none of this existed? But everything comes with a price. In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, the protagonist, Jonas, finds out he is special. Jonas has the power to see beyond. In the society that Lois Lowry illustrates, all pain is lost, but readers learn that without pain there is no love. The protagonist soon realizes that the society is wrong and rigid with control and harsh punishments. Soon he realizes that both pain and love are vital. He also learns that freedom to make your own choices is crucial. Jonas finds a way to give this to the community with a heartbreaking ending. The book and the movie,The Giver, have many similarities and differences. The author and director of these entertainments each have their own reasons for the change that is created. The main similarities and differences are made in respect to character’s relationships, setting, and theme.
