The Indian caste system is historically one of the main elements where people in India are socially differentiated through classes, religions, regions, tribes, genders, and languages. Caste is a term which is used to specify a group of people having a specific rank. The Indian term for caste is jati and generally designates a group that can vary in size from a handful to many thousands. The various jati are traditionally arranged in hierarchical order and fit into one of the four basic varnas – Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Sudras. Each caste had a clearly defined role. Members of each caste were obligated to look after one another, so each caste had its own support system. This paper describes the role of each varnas in the society.

Culture is defined as “The arts, beliefs, customs, institutions, and other products of human work and thought considered as a unit, especially with regard to a particular time or social group” by American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2011). Also, the Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (2005) defines culture as “A feature of the terrain that has been constructed by man. Included are such items as roads, buildings, and canals; boundary lines; and, in a broad sense, all names and legends on a map”. In a nutshell, culture is everything that makes up the basic ways of life.

Traditions developed by different people and religions can sometimes be a good thing and sometimes be dangerous. In this tradition they believe that tossing babies off the building will give them good luck and long life. Both Hindus and Muslims practice this religious tradition. Everyone who believes in tossing the infants shows up to the rituals every year.

The Indian private sector has vehemently rejected the system of quotas. The corporate sector has argued that caste-based hiring will reduce efficiency and competitiveness. For some actors of this sector, caste criteria don’t work in the today’s knowledge economy. Some have even claimed that caste-based reservations will not be acceptable to Western multinationals who will take their business to other countries.
