In-home Care: Downsizing Homes

Most people do not look forward to moving into a smaller home. The dream is usually one of bigger and better. Yet, bigger and fancier equates to more money, more time, and greater upkeep. As seniors get older, many of them start to see the larger homes they raised their families in as more of a burden than a benefit. This is the mindset that makes downsizing a home one of peace and reward. They know that the money they save will allow them to purchase things they want at this stage in their life. The time they would have spent maintaining the yard is not spend enjoying leisure activities, and the money and time of upkeep, taxes, and utilities now go toward fun things.

Many seniors find that cleaning is more difficult with age-related ailments such as arthritis. Smaller homes, especially those without stairs, saves time and pain. Cleaning that could have taken an entire weekend and left a sore back and joints now takes a couple of hours and is relatively painless. With in home care assistance, the cleaning can be done quickly so more time can be spent on what is really important. With an apartment or condo, there is not any yard work to do, either.

Not everything is peaches and cream, however. One major consideration when thinking about downsizing is where you are going to put everything. If you are not careful, you could end up spending all of your savings on storage facilities. This means that, if possible, a plan should be made prior to jumping into the move to sell off or gift those items that are not going to be able to make the trip.
