Florida joined the United States as a state on March 3, 1845; the 27th state. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed in Northeast Florida to claim Florida for Spain. He named the state in tribute to Spain’s Easter celebration known as “Pascua Florida”, or Feast of Flower. Soon after, it was known as the sunshine state. In the 20th century, tourism became Florida’s leading industry and has remained this way today. The Spanish had great expectations of Florida despite of the obstacles they had to face, although some obstacles became successful in Florida. The French Settlement of Florida began in 1562 and found themselves on the St. Johns River not far from the Spanish settlement at St. Augustine. “Cpt. Augustine in the spring of 1562 (Gannon, 47)”. Ribaut built a wall near the coast line of St. Johns River. He named it The River May. He started to move northward finding Fort Royal Harbor and creating a colony; which was guarded by a defensive wall called Charles Fort. However, when Ribaut came back to Europe he was arrested for creating the walls and held in custody in England. The Spaniards heard Ribaut’s settlement which led Phillip II to send Lucas Vazquez de Ayllon to settle in Florida, but he never sailed. An expedition was then sent by the Cuban governor only to find out that the French men have already settled in. The French moved from Port Royal to ST. Johns and built Fort Caroline there; Ribaut lieutenant, Rene de Laudonniere was the main French Huguenot explorer that built a triangle-shaped fort and named it Fort Caroline. It is now known as Jacksonville, Florida. He explored this new territory and became good friends with the Indians, soon after the people did not have believe his leadership so they stole some of his boats which caused trouble to the French. “Laudonniere and Guillaume Brouhart believed that the great river was the highway to peninsula Florida but when he and his men made the river voyage they found out that the …show more content…
Throughout his voyage he had trouble reaching Florida due to the weather and the loss of several ships. When Menendez finally arrived, his first goal was to kick the French out of Florida and take ownership of the land from the French. He started out by building a fort in St. Augustine and prepared his men for battle. Ribaut returns to Florida and attempts to attack the new Spanish colony and capture St. Augustine. But the storm prevented Ribaut from returning to Florida. Menendez then traveled north and attacked Fort Caroline surprising the French defenders. Menendez won the battle, destroyed all the forts built by the French and even went out at sea to destroy Ribaut’s ships including Ribaut himself. Menendez became the first Spanish colonial governor in Florida and wanted to confirm that all of Florida remained under the control of Spain. Menendez and his men built many watch towers to use as lookouts. Menendez also began building forts along the coast. “He requested to import settle farmers and carry 500 settlers (Gannon, 51).” He promised: “I will give them lands and east states for their farms, a dozen cows with one bull, two oxen for
According to FMM in an article titled Francisco Menendez, this was true because in the 1740’s, England attacked Fort Mose, but most of the citizens there were already moved to the protection of St. Augustine. Sharon M. Draper was able to accurately depict the characters, while also giving them their own story.
Even though the Spain had ruled for a longer period time. The British had one advantage they were able to recruit permanent settlers. Most of Florida's officials were looking to save money to keep public services going. The Proclamation of 1763 outlawed settlement west of the appalachians to the newly acquired Florida. The Britishers partners were the French. The French had strong desires to develop trade within their new colony and also outsiders around it. Each pioneer settler was given 100 acres of land and 50 acres per family member, i mean who could complain about that. Soon after this the British went to war against the British. After the war with France it nearly bankrupted the British government.
Florida has always been a beautiful state aligned with unique natural wonders which has made it a location of wonder within the U.S. Even with Florida’s majestic natural appeal the state in its territorial years struggled with its public image as Indian attacks were common place in the region along with yellow fever and environmental phenomena such as hurricanes. While Gary Mormino book makes no effort to shy away from the less favorable aspects Florida history including the financial struggles of the early nineties, his book is clearly portraying an optimistic tone which echoes the glories of Florida’s past and future.
Americans were pressing on in the quest to expand their territory. Native Americans had two choices, given by Thomas Jefferson. They could either assimilate into American farming society or be forced to move westward. William Harrison had also been penning tribes against one another however he found a way. Eventually, the United States gained territory from the Native Americans and with that lost any favor with them they previously had. With all of the anti-British views in the United States, the British feared an invasion of Canada. In an attempt to prevent such an action, the British supplied the Native Americans and renewed alliances. This created problems for American expansion into Florida because of Native American raids and attack with their new supplies. Being unable to get a hold of Florida was another precedent for war with Britain because of its ally, Spain. Not only were these conflicts the flame that stated the war, but there were Congressional powers who wanted a
Established in 1961, the Special Committee of Decolonization is a body of the United Nations, an international bureaucratic agency, working towards the just treatment and interaction of Non-Self-Governing individuals. This body still operates in the present day. The Special Committee of Decolonization defines Non-Self-Governing Territories “whose people have not yet attained a full measure of self-government”. (United Nations 2017) In essence, a nation where foreign, commonly colonial powers dictate the lives of people who have and maintain rich, diverse, historical, and cultural existence in the world for millennia. And while The Special Committee of Decolonization, works towards the decolonization of these nations, they fail to end the scourge of informal imperialism.

In 1419, Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal began the period of time known as the “Age of Exploration”. Europe’s leading superpowers, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, and England, all competed for colonization in unknown territories. Samuel de Champlain colonized along the St. Lawrence River in 1608, Henry Hudson of Holland established Albany in 1609, and Spain established colonies in Mexico and Mesoamerica. In 1607, England established its first colony in North America around the Chesapeake Bay, and nearly a decade later established a second colony in present-day New England. Both New England and the Chesapeake were founded by the British around the same time; however, both colonies developed a different economy, government, and many
When Columbus returned in November 1493 he was surprised to learn that the settlement he had left behind had been destroyed. Some of the 39 men had clashed with the Taino Indians, and were killed. Other crewmembers had become sick, unable to cope with the harsh environment of the Caribbean. As time progressed, small settlements were founded across the island, and the heart of the Spanish conquest in the New World, Hispaniola, began to develop accordingly. In April 1493 a settlement on the northern coast called La Isabela was founded in what is now the province of Puerto Plata, and in 1494 Concepcion de la Vega was founded.
The Spanish war gave the United States an empire. At the end of the Spanish war the United States took Spanish colonies such as Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and many other islands. The creation of the American Empire leads to the end of the Spanish Empire. The United States wanted to build up the countries so that markets would open up and purchase American goods and to improve the American economy.
The Portuguese settled in eastern Brazil, the French along the St. Lawrence River in present-day Canada, first explored by Jacques Cartier and then settled sixty years later by Samuel de Champlain. The English came to the New World late, after several failed expeditions by Walter Raleigh, Humphrey Gilbert, and Martin Frobisher. Once the Jamestown colony survived its first trials of starvation, disease, riots, and violence with the Powhatan tribe, the English expanded from this base up and down the eastern coast of North America.
Imperialism is when a larger, more powerful nation takes control of smaller, weaker nations. The American idea is for freedom. As a nation the United States promotes the freedom of itself and other countries. America once fought for the freedom from a larger, more powerful nation, so why would the government want to go back on what this country was started on, which was freedom.
“The new world had an extraordinary richness of languages”(Native peoples prior to European arrival). In the fifteenth century, people in Europe began to explore west to seek new lands and resources because of economic problems. The Europeans came to America to look for gold and silver, but the trip would be difficult and dangerous because there were no maps and not much knowledge on how to get there.Prince Henrey took the challenge to make it possible for others to sail to the Americas without any knowledge on how to get there. He created a place where people who were interested could share their knowledge about geography.People learned about maps and navigation. Then, Henrys sailors finally decided to lead others to go west where eventually Jamestown would be created. In 1606, King James told the three royal charters to create a comfortable colony on the east coast. The English worried about being attacked from the Spanish so they chose almost an island where they parked their ships by tying them to the trees available. To honor the king, they named the place Jamestown(Culters at Jamestown).
Imperialism and then colonialism opened the floodgates that are troubled race relations, racism, and misguided societal values. Race has played a vital role in how Americans view each other, and themselves, and the experiences that they have. We constantly hear about institutionalized racism, the school-to-prison pipeline and police brutality on the news. The topic of race has such an enormous presence in our society that it simply cannot be ignored. But what is rarely talked about is how these conditions are incredibly similar to those that people in Latin America have to endure as well. Racism does not end at the borders of the United States, and in fact, they only seem to get worse in countries that are less developed.
