My father joined the Marine Corps in the 70’s and fought in the Vietnam War. He received a good conduct medal which came from the evacuation of Saigon in 1975. My father and mother have been divorced since 2007. My mother raised my sisters and me by herself since the divorce. She recently received her bachelor’s degree in business a couple years ago and financially, we have been struggling while she seeks to gain more experience. But nonetheless, that hasn’t affected my sisters and my ability to succeed in school. My older sister Lauren

My major is Human Nutrition, and I am debating on a minor in biochemistry. I am a member of the Honors College and a Morrill Scholar which provides tuition for diversity driven students. As a health driven person, I would like to find a club that focuses on nutrition. Living a healthy life is an important factor in the overall standard of life. Also I’m going toward getting involved in research opportunities at their medical center and obtain more experience in the hospital setting. An M.D. will be a first step, but I also want to concurrently pursue my Ph.D. in Cancer Biology. It will allow me to assist on both ends of the spectrum in providing health care and doing research for future prevention methods, especially when there are such immense health disparities for African Americans. I worked in research labs these past two summers and have found an interest in cancer research. Medical school will put me in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt so receiving financial assistance through scholarships now will reduce my overall debt.

Robert Frost once wrote, “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I, I took the one less travelled by and that has made all the difference. As a young, educated, black man I have already chosen to take the road less travelled. Life is a journey where you stumble and fall, but I elected to not become a negative statistic. While in high school I decided to start my college education early in the pursuit of bettering my mind and proving to my ancestors that their plight is being well-respected.
I would like to thank you for your donation to the Amy Wasserman scholarship fund. I attend Cornell University and the cost of attendance is high. Ever since I was a young kid I have always been interested in movies. My grandma, who was full of the wise the life experience left, always knew about my interest in movies. She feed my vain for the art. Even though her religion, she professed Adventist of seven-day religion, didn't let her go to the cinema, she always found the way to took me to the cinema. My mom always told me life was about making tough choices, and throughout my life I’ve had to make them. It has been difficult at times to make it my priority but I have had to learn how to do that. Whenever she would tell me this though, I always thought it would be making the tough decision between right and wrong, not between two things I love. Over the summer I got the opportunity to attend a college class at NYU under a partial scholarship. The class I was going to be taking would give me a taste of the kind of classes I would be taking if I went into the international relations field, which is what I plan on studying in college. I was so excited when I got the letter in the mail, until I read the date, July 30th through August 5th. NYU class ran exactly through the week of honestly one of my favorite events of the year, Camp Able.
