Spending my four years of high school in the AIMS program at Jordan has influenced me to continue to pursue higher education. Getting the best education possible will allow me to be able to give back to my community by providing affordable and valuable care to everyone. I was given me the opportunity to volunteer at the Long Beach Veteran Affairs hospital and in the Long Beach Bike Uptown program. I deserve to be selected for the Jordan Hackett Memorial Scholarship because as a hard-working student, I will commit myself to effectively take advantage of the opportunity that this scholarship will provide me. As a student, I not only persistently work hard academically but also try to improve my work ethic and people skills. I believe education is the key to success, and I try to connect my passion for education with my desire for helping others. As a result, I have decided to pursue a career as a neonatal nurse practitioner. I wish to get the opportunity to bring life into this world and care for the sick newborns to the best of my ability.

Because of my strong interest in fulfilling a career in Nursing, I know that achieving this goal of mine will not be an easy task. The tasks of a nurse fascinates me; I have had several opportunities to observe nurses in hospitals and I find their work intriguing. I have always been interested in the health field and performing the jobs of a medical professional. Ever since the age of twelve, I have known I wanted to attend a university and pursue a career in the health field. I have always had an interest in my science courses, specifically biology and chemistry and have excelled in these areas. I want to be able to receive the best education possible and make my parents and community proud. I wish to do more for my community than just being a typical nurse and I will be able to do more by becoming a nurse practitioner.

My initial interest in nursing began from my experience with my grandmother. It was in the fall of 2007 when my grandmother was sent to the hospital due to hypernatremia. My dad would pick me up every afternoon from school to visit my grandmother. I was given the responsibility to look after my grandma for nearly two weeks that includes in feeding her, assisting her, and other light duties. What fascinate me during my visits in the hospital were the nurses who assisted and took care of my grandma. They treated my grandma with dignity, kindness, compassion, courtesy, respect, understanding, and love. Their commitment, professionalism, dedication, determination and skills inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field. From that point, I realized that nursing is a field that enables people impact other people’s lives and make a difference. At 9 years old, being a nurse was a childhood dream and now I am at the point of turning my dream into reality. I want to study and pursue my dream registered nursing at Ryerson University that offers a nursing degree program that focuses on developing student’s critical thinking skills, ability to analyze reflectively and apply theory through community health focused practice making Ryerson one of the best nursing schools in Canada.

Nursing is an excellent career choice, where an individual acquires great gratitude while attending to others necessities. Well, as long as I can remember I was a sick child and, I figured that I wanted to be a nurse, someone who was always helping people and that at a point of time in my life hey helped me. After going through a lot of trial and error in my career, I have decided that I want to pursue being a Registered Nurse. Many things have led me to this career choice, including personal and financial gain. I have tried many other occupations and educational programs and none of them have fulfilled me like I believe nursing will. It has taken me a long time to get to this point and I often joke that I finally know what I want to be when I grow up. I will tell you about my journey and what I hope to gain in my future.

So many people say saving lives takes hard work and extensive training, but are they really dedicated to do the work it takes. Medical school takes hard work and so much time to do the work as being a nurse. Being a nurse you have to have the heart and the great skills to be the best care giver you could be to a patient in need for help. Not only are you impacting someone else life but you are also impacting yourself with the great benefits they offer you, the way the patients acknowledge you by your hard work. Nurses make sure they have the care they need. Nursing is one of the most longest working shifts in the medical field you will ever experience.

Caring for others has always been a passion of mine, and becoming a nurse has always been my dream. While my dream has turned reality, I can say that nursing has blessed me with the opportunity to not only be a servant to those in my community, but it has also allowed me to be of some comfort to patients and their loved ones during their darkest and most vulnerable moments. Nursing offers a variety of opportunities, where the only restrictions are the ones we set for ourselves. As for myself, all things are possible, for if I want it, I strongly believe it’s already mine. The depths that I will go to reach the latitude of success that I so desire is boundless.

Nursing has been a part of my life indirectly for many years, from something as insignificant as giving a stranger a tissue for their blood nose to an impromptu counseling session for a friend with emotional trauma. I have had a growing desire to become a nurse all my life and now it strikes me as a very worthwhile and satisfying career to choose. I have always wanted to be able to make a difference to people's lives. With Nursing I can do this in a confident and supportive way. Helping others is my greatest passion. It is what I want to do with my life. My career goal is to become a pediatrician. Helping children is what I like the most. It makes me feel accomplished and proud of myself.
