I need to take a Cornerstone class? Are you serious? This was the worst reaction I had at first. At the beginning I felt that this class would be a waste of time and money. When classes began, I would go into this class with a very negative attitude. But then as the time passed, my way of thinking began to change. This Cornerstone class taught me different things that will help me in life. At first we began to learn about our personality type. This is definitely the topic that really began to influence my life and way of thinking. The next topic that caught my interest was time management. The last topic that has been influential this semester is test taking skills.
The topic that was the most influential to me was the personality types. This topic has also been something interesting to learn about. First we were able to find our personality type and I turned out to be an ISTJ. Learning my personality type made me realize different things. For example, it has given me the idea that I need to be more extraverted to be an excellent nurse. It has also given me the chance to learn the best way to study. Being an ISTJ, I learned that I like to be very organized. Since my personality type states that I am a person who is very organized. This is true because I like to organize all of my information, especially notes, in a certain way. Or when I need to study, the best way to study would be in a quiet and isolated place. Introverts are known for liking their quiet and alone time.
Firstly, choosing a topic that you’re truly interesting in because it can provoke your passion to engage more in this particular
The most challenging topic for me was the Unit 6: A Normal World. At first, I had difficulty understanding the Standard scores and Percentiles of a distribution. However, the seminar and discussion posts in Unit 6 helped me a lot to get through and have a better understanding of the Normal distribution.
One topic that interested me was the nutrition and weight status goal. The goal for this topic is to “promote health and reduce chronic disease risk” by having a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy body weight. This has been a goal during the past decades and since it hasn’t been met in the past it is on this decade’s goal list again. This webpage talks about the importance of nutrition and a healthy weight along with the risks of being overweight. Those who take care of themselves by eating right and maintaining a healthy weight are less likely to develop chronic diseases, experience complications during pregnancy (women), and die at an earlier age. This webpage also gives statistics on how we are performing as a country. This is important to see what still needs to be done to achieve these goals by the end of the
Lastly, was the topic I found most compelling, community colleges. Did you know 55 out of 100 graduating students at a university actually went to a community college? That's an amazing statistic because it gives a second chance for those of us who didn't meet university requirements. Not to mention, some of the faculty told us they graduated from Goldenwest as well. This information made me feel more secure that I was on the right track to my academic success.
This course has not been anything remotely close to what I imagined it would be. I pictured a class where we discussed voting, civil service, and the community. One which involved little to no reflection or inner thought. However, I have found myself reflecting and digging deeply. This class has put many of the major issues facing America’s communities in the forefront. We have traded lectures on paying taxes for discussions on privilege. Through the assigned readings and classroom content, I have found myself more knowledgeable on the topics at hand, and more established in my own beliefs.
Learning about my interest improved my understanding of hard you have to work to get where you want to be. What I learned about my interest is that it takes a lot of
Students chose topics with different amounts of passion. For some, I needed to make suggestions, provide them with a limited list of “controversial” topics. For others, they automatically understood the idea of choosing a problem which others had already debated and endeavoring to use research
I chose the topic are college athletes given preferential treatment over non-athletes while in college because it is something very controversial in college athletics. Besides being controversial, I also find the topic very interesting. It is interesting to me to find out why college athletes get special treatment to play a sport when in reality the special treatment is probably a disservice to the athletes. Another reason I enjoy this topic is that I love sports in general and college athletics are some of my favorites to watch.
I chose the topic of teamwork because, teamwork is an essential part of our nursing careers. We will continually have to work with other nurses and doctors to help our patients receive the best care they can receive. Not only is teamwork essential in the hospital, or nursing home, but, it is essential in everyday lives, and I think that is why this is
Additionally, I learned about the importance of narrowing a topic. I realized that a broader topic makes people change their focus, making it extremely difficult to decide what information is relevant and what should be
As I walked into the first Cornerstone class of the semester on August 20, 2015, I believed it was going to be a breeze. I asked myself “What could I possibly obtain from this?”, and truthfully I assumed the answer would be, slim to none. However, my expectations could not have been any further from the reality. During the Cornerstone course, I was able to attain certain assets that I did not already possess. Out of the many topics and ideas discussed throughout the course, the three most influential have been: True Colors the Go, Picture, Scribe and Dr. Tawils’ speeches about life.
My opinions on specific topics have also evolved throughout this course. For example: my group project group chose to tackle the issue of capital punishment. “What goes around comes around. Or does it? I believe my awareness of this issue started when the five of us decided which side, pro or con, we were going to speak for. Originally we had four for pro and only one for con. Well, this was not going to be a balanced paper obviously so I said I would join the con side. Therefore, I had to research a view that I previously had discounted.
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
Over the course of this class the topic that would appeal to me for research would have something to do with medical development. I am a medical professional and new inventions such as medication, vaccines and diagnostic procedures highly interest me. I love to read about them and research them. I also like to read the pros and cons about them, so writing an evaluation paper might be something that would interest me above all. I also like to read about education and politics and these subjects are also something I would like to research. Above all, I feel most comfortable researching a subject in a medical field because, I feel that is where my strongest opinions and arguments are.
I haven 't heard much about the cornerstone course, so when I began this class, I didn 't have anything to base my expectations on except for that everyone I knew going to FSW has to take it as well. Except for students who attended before it was mandatory to take. I was full of anticipation about what the course would cover. Glancing at the textbook, I figured the material would be unique compared to anything I 've taken before. It also crossed my mind that maybe this class is insignificant compared to the numerous other classes ahead of me on the path to a hopeful future degree. However I soon decided my opinion was wrong, the topics covered soon proved to be very motivational for me as I took on other classes and began to adjust to college. It 's served as something to base my perspective on for years to come. Some of the most beneficial topics covered for me were personal financing, time management, and study strategies.
