Imagine your right arm pinned under a boulder…you’re trapped with nowhere to go. People are looking for you and if they find you your as good as dead. You’re bleeding and there are sharks in the water. Aron Ralston from the autobiography “Trapped,” Hyeonseo Lee from “My Escape from North Korea” by Ted Talk, and Bethany Hamilton from “Young Surfer Girl Tells Tale of Shark Attack” by ABC News have each been in one of these deadly situations. They prove that for a person to be a survivor one must possess courage, determination, and critical thinking. When it comes to Hyeonseo Lee, she used her courage to not only save herself but also her family. In Paragraph 15 in the article titled “My Escape from North Korea” by Ted Talk, Lee explains how she went to great lengths to get her family to freedom and how she put her own life at risk to save them. She knew that if she and her family were caught by the Chinese police, they would be sent back to North Korea and executed. Yet, she still had the courage to travel across the border of Laos, go between the immigration office, and the police station, where she could have been easily identified and apprehended. She could have lost everything she built for herself, but she knew she had to protect her loved ones no matter the cost, which is the true definition of courage. Courage can …show more content…
In an interview with ABC News from the article “Young Surfer Girl Tells Tale of Shark Attack,” Hamilton said, “If I don’t get back on my board, I’ll be in a bad mood forever.” It wasn’t the shark attack that would have killed her-it was the thought of losing her passion. After the shark attack and losing an arm, it just gave her another reason to try harder. She didn’t let her disability get in the way. She used her determination to push forward and make a great outcome out of an awful situation. Having determination can be the light in the dark, that keeps many

There are many mysterious and unknowns in the death of Hae Min Lee. There are many different people who could be looked at as a suspect. However the jury decided that one kid by the name of Adnan Syed, the ex boyfriend of Hae, was responsible for her death. I am going to explain why I think the Jury was incorrect, and did not have enough evidence to convict Adnan for the death of Hae Min Lee.

One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
This courage, or rather the opposite, is demonstrated in Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried, in particular the chapter entitled “On the Rainy River”. In the summer of 1968, O’Brien was drafted to perform military service in the Vietnam War. He, like many others, thought that this conflict was very unjust and he didn’t really understand what the United States was trying to accomplish. Unfortunately for O’Brien, he felt that if he did not go and perform the service like he intended that not only his family, but also his entire hometown would look at him as if he were a coward. In response, he states “I was a coward. I went to war.” (61). In the traditional sense, the

Throughout history, there have been countless times whenre individuals have courageously fought for change and societal justice. For instance, Gandhi helped India gain their independence, even though the circumstances were extremely risky for him, and could have led to his arrest or even death.
