Social work is a career that finds and chooses you, rather than you selecting it. Social work has always been an immense portion of my life even when I had no recollection of what social work entailed. My life revolved around so many situations that had a social worker stepped in, my life would be totally different than it is today. Many individuals and agencies lack the compassion and empathy for oppressed people. Having been in many circumstances, has given me the experience and background that influenced me to go into social work, as well as the understanding of my role and responsibilities that I will assume as a professional social worker, and my reasons for selecting the program at ASU School of Social Work and thoughts on how the Mission Statement addresses my career goals.

Prior to being in graduate school I was not fully aware of all the opportunities and experiences in social work. I have since gained more knowledge of macro level opportunities in the field of social work, such as advocating for human rights, and social justice. I have also been presented with the chance to tackle tough policies that directly impacts clients that I have interacted with through my experience in social work. The decision to attend graduate school is a wise investment for a social worker dedicated to improving proficiency in their current occupation. This applicant possesses discipline along with diligence and determination which exceeds the standards for the graduate studies program.

As I approach the end of my junior year at Lehman College, I feel that it is time for me apply the skills learned within the Social Work program to the real world. While reviewing the possible opportunities I found that your program will provide with the not only the most challenging but hands on and well-rounded experience.

The world is changing quite quickly, and the need for social workers is going to increase over the next few years. The changing policies are coming faster than those who it effects can cope with. My hope with a degree from the Wayne State University social work program is to increase the opportunity for success and safety in adolescent populations in urban communities.

I have met the leadership team of California’s NASW and listened to their presentations for the analysis of three legislative topics. I was inspired by the powerful speech from Mariko Yamada, the candidate of State Senate District 3. She encouraged social work students to participate at macro practice. I felt motivated and cohesive when I heard she said, “Together, we can change.” Her speech reminded me that I choose social work for making a difference in people’s lives. During the event, I sat together with seniors and students from graduated program. We talked and discussed about internships and the MASW program. At the roll-call of schools, we called out a slogan to represent our school spirit. I was so proud of being a part of our school and a part of social work student, and being a social worker in the future. This roll-call of school provided me a chance to know social work students from 24 universities and the cultures represented for their schools. After I graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara I was unsure what my next step would be. Personally, it would be a great accomplishment being admitted for the MSW program because I would be the first person person in my family to make it into graduate school. Along with this, the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work being is the most prestigious School of Social Work in Canada, and ranked fifth in North America, which all adds to the accomplishment that accompanies admittance to this program. To begin, the desire I have to be admitted into Boise State University’s online graduate social work program is strong, and the fire behind my desire was lit long ago. Social work is such an important part of the communal functioning of society. I believe there is a great need that policies and laws often neglect to address. I am pursuing a degree in social work because I wear the face of vulnerability. I am a young, black, and educated woman living in a time where discrimination is still apparent. If everyone was given an equal chance and the opportunity for change, I believe we can create a powerhouse of knowledge and greater awareness for the human in humanity. My background is in criminology and I wanted to pursue a degree outside of my field in order to take a comprehensive approach to how I saw and understood the world. Social work is such a diverse field which speaks to the diversity that is representative in society. My values align very much with what it means to be a social worker. I believe in positive change. As a future social worker, I want to be that voice for those that do not have a voice, and make changes in the Microsystems which would inspire change at the Macro level.
