Humor and Persuasion
Do you think of yourself as funny, humorous or a joker of sorts? Many people feel they have what it takes to bring humor to different situations. Usually humor is used to lighten a mood or attitude and often makes people feel happy. Understanding that humor can play a very important role in speech enhance the awareness of the proper means and tactics in which to use humor. Persuasion often includes various forms of humor where the person trying to persuade intertwines the humor effect and brings lightness to the situation. Today, one can see the tactic of persuasion being used as a standard avenue to influence a person’s attitude or beliefs by presenting them with different messages that encourage things like using certain brand name products, vote a certain way, or where to take a vacation just to name a few. There are four types of people that include gullible people, skeptical people, firm believers, and people who are leaders who trust others as well as make others follow their ideas. Persuasion is a widespread topic of social psychology and may be done in different ways. There are two types of cognitive processes by which to persuade someone, which are the central route or the peripheral route. For this assignment I used mostly the central route approach as well as using a little of the peripheral route approach. To reinforce the peripheral route approach the use of pathos was also used during the video to play on the emotions of the watcher. Rhetorical analysis is looking at something such as an essay, newspaper, movie or advertisement and looking beyond the story, information and intended audience. To analyze the purpose behind what’s written or said, to discover the intended audience and why they are writing what they are writing. There are three parts of rhetorical appeal persuasion: Ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos or an ethical appeal. This is the audience’s perspective on what the author is writing and to decide how credible it is. Who the author is and if they are credible. Pathos or pathetic appeal is the writer's attempt at connecting with the audience through experiences or examples. It is directly connected to interests and emotions of the audience.
Don't we all have something in common? Well that's just how comedians have an effect to communicate a universal truth with their audience. Whether if its confusion, sickness, frustration we all have something that we can relate to and that is how comedians use this effect because we can relate to that feeling or subject. That's how a comedian can communicate a universal truth to us by using humor.
Persuasion relies on the first two appeals, pathos and ethos, while argument appeals to straightforward logic.
Throughout time, humorists have been able to pull off a phenomenon, which allows for others to laugh about sensitive, stressful topics. With talent, humorists are able to captivate positive emotion from their audience and allow for society to see delicate issues in an unbiased view. Although humorists are commonly seen as people who only intend to entertain, humorists purposefully say things through their work that allow for hard issues to be spoken or illustrated.

Over 115 million animals are killed in laboratory experiments worldwide for drug, cosmetics, chemical and food testing every year. Nowadays, advertising agencies against animal abuse are deciding to use shocking tactics to get their point across about ending animal cruelty. There are several advertisements that address different types of issues, but at the end of the day all they are trying to do is to give a voice to the voiceless, the animals. In order for these agencies to get the ability to manipulate and the full attention of the audience they need to use the most common persuasive strategies. Hauser covers a plethora of details on how to create a well-made persuasive argument in his book, an Introduction to Rhetorical Theory; however, he covered three specific essentials that are necessary for persuasion: the components logos, pathos and ethos; purposive discourse and rhetorical competence; identification. People always say that laughter alleviates tension. If this is the case, then it makes sense that the use of humor when discussing uncomfortable topics can make the conversation easier and more light-hearted. One of Mark Twain’s most frequently used devices in works such as “Advice to Youth”, “To the Person Sitting in Darkness”, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is satire, which can provide society a method to bond over uncomfortable topics, and facilitate the ability to sustain that bond through an easier way to create discussion.

Humor as it pertains to persuasion is a tactics that is used to get the audience in a good mood, to make them more comfortable, and maybe easier to be persuaded. The use of humor in many aspect of the world has shown to have positive effects, and the use of humor in the art of persuasion would be extremely effective in the presentation. With the addition of humor to the persuasion presentation will increase the likeability of the source of the information being presented. One area she found was that men tell more stories and jokes than women. She suggests that they are not doing this to be funny but instead do it to again to negotiate status. Imagine a vast concert hall filled with people. The audience excitedly clamor in anticipation for the main star of this event. The event they paid so much money for, cleared up time in their schedule for, spent time getting to the event for. As the lights dim, the spotlight shines on the center stage. Then an average person emerges on the stage with a thousand eyes’ on him. He only has with a microphone in his hand. Just a typical person, with a normal gait and normal sense of fashion.
