Before being in the Human Services Field she wasn’t aware of it being declared a major and knew she always had a passion for helping people. The skills utilized in the Human Services Field are being adaptive, organized, multi-tasking and time management. I have discovered that a benefit of going to school at a later stage in life is that I have had time to discover who I am and what is important to me. Every time I have thought about what I want to do with my life, it has centered on helping others achieve their dreams and goals. Human services is the right academic major for me because I am ready to make a positive impact in someone’s life and want to equip others with the necessary tools to do so. I conducted an interview with Ms. Jamila Corria on her duties as an academic achievement program advisor at the University of Maryland. The purpose of this interview was to gain clarity and understanding in what truly goes in to counseling others on making life choices. While also analyzing communication challenges she has faced overall through her current career and techniques to deal with those challenges. While conducting the interview I monitored various different verbal and non-verbal signals throughout the interview. The reason I choose Ms. Jamila is because as a student who is currently pursuing a degree in Sociology it is important to learn about the different career paths that can be chosen with this major. Sociology is a broad subject and can be pursued through many different paths. I have yet to decide on exactly which path to choose so by conducting this interview it allows me to see one option. Counseling is a career I have often thought of pursing but have not quite decided on.
When doing an informational interview you need to plan it out. Make a plan of what you’re going to ask give yourself 15 to 30 minutes to do the interview. Dress nice like you would if you were going to do that job. Make the interview interesting and some things that you’re into. You don’t want to bore yourself with the interview because then you’re going to bore that other person. Identify the information that you want. What questions you have. Like when your older and move out are you going to get a house or an apartment and share with friends or are you going to stay at home with mom and dad? Why? Where do you want to go on vacation if you could go anywhere and why? You could also ask like how was you day at the job? Like was it typical
We began the interview by discussing Megan’s schooling and history. Megan graduated from Brigham Young University Idaho with a Bachelor’s degree in social work. Megan informed us that social work had not always been her first career choice. Originally Megan had planned to become a teacher, however like most college students she changed her mind as well as her major a few times. Megan went on to explain that she considered majoring in sociology or marriage and family studies however she chose social work instead because she believed it would be a more marketable and beneficial degree. Megan has worked very closely with senior citizens since she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree many years ago. Megan stated that she loves the population she works with and wants to continue working in the senior care industry.

As a result, I decided to conduct my interview with a professional that is associated with the business operations of athletics. For the community interview, I wanted to interview someone who is newer in the field, and make a day out of it. I researched some clinics near my hometown, and called iPsychiatry. iPsychiatry is a dual diagnosis in Warren, Michigan. When I called, I asked if there was a newer social worker I could interview with for a social work project. The receptionist was eager to help, and later contacted me with my clinician’s name and possible interview times.
As part of our preparation for placement, we were required to make a role play on a given scenario in pairs. Each of us had to play the role of the social work student and the service user. We chose to use Miss Allen’s scenario, because we both had experience of working the adults. In preparation for this task, we met twice to clarify our roles and discussed the scenario as we understood it. We also discussed how we were going to assess Miss Allen, and what help we would offer her. The preparation was an important part of our task because it challenged us to think of the interview within its widest context, taking into account the particular needs of Miss Allen, agency policy and procedure and ourselves as student social
I must say, as a person considering relocating, this assignment really has made me consider quite a bit more than salary, schools, quality of cultural entertainment, neighborhoods etc. It reminded me to really examine the importance of a “good fit” for my family as well.
