How people can learn from others experiences through stories By Yann Guerin Stories give a better understanding of people's experiences in the world. Through these texts, people learn about others lives and develop a connection with them. People empathize with others through their stories as well as learn how other people live and see the world differently. In fictional stories like “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, we see how a child who is unsure about his identity lives. In “The Human Experience” we see true stories about people living in difficult situations. In both these stories, the authors tackle issues of identity, poverty, and sickness to help make more sense of the world. In “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, Laurie faces struggles with his identity once he starts kindergarten. His mother shows how he speaks about his kindergarten experience. He tells stories of the trouble that his classmate, Charles, causes. Ironically, it turns out that Laurie is actually telling stories of himself, and we can see that he is facing struggles with his identity. An example of this is in this line, ‘“The teacher spanked a boy, though,” Laurie …show more content…
On their search, they meet people who live in terrible circumstances. There are people in a Ghanaian Leper Colony who have been abandoned by their family and friends because of a terrible illness they have, but have managed to stay positive despite their situation. Furthermore, there are homeless people living in New York city who live in difficult circumstances every day, often not knowing who they are sleeping next to at night, these experiences have taught them to not take things for granted. Jeffrey and Clifford also met some children living in a hospital for orphans who go through lots of pain every day but often manage to have smiles on their faces. People can learn, as have Clifford and Jeffrey, from these people's
The truly great human stories deal with the most basic elements of human emotions and motivations. The Following stories are perfect examples of those elements.
Since the beginning of time stories were a major influence in the ways generations would pass down knowledge to the younger generations. The power of stories and storytelling teaches individuals valuable lessons and good morals that help mold them into reasonable citizens. In western society children are exposed to
The example I highlighted, shows that I am able to convey an experience, because the hero has learned something about himself. He set out on a quest, in order to protect his homeland, and ended up realizing, that what others think of him, shouldn’t make him feel bad about himself. I have him going through multiple obstacles and tests, to finally realize that who he is as a person is fine. This proves, that I am able to convey and experience through an engaging narrative.
In “Charles”, written by Shirley Jackson, a kindergarten student named Laurie had a tough time transitioning into his first year of school and tried to hide it from his parents. Laurie’s behavior changed negatively when he started school because he was strong-willed and had trouble taking directions from the teacher. Laurie is an older brother to his baby sister. “Charles” took place in the 1950’s at Laurie’s home as well as at school. Laurie struggled with adjusting to Kindergarten and held Charles, an imaginary child, responsible for his actions. This behavior change started when he began kindergarten.
You’re always told to appeal to all audiences when writing. Sometimes that means limiting your opinion, in other words your personal views. As writers you want to draw as much attention possible to your novels. Personal stories are simply pathways authors use to relate towards readers, or to change their minds on a specified subject. Sometimes, these personal stories reach out to their own kind of people. Or it criticizes everyone for holding a blind eye towards an issue. Personal stories / views are in fact an essential way for authors to relate/ influence readers. Through class readings this semester, we’ve learned how empowering personal stories can be. In this writers philosophy I plan to analyze these authors’ writings and examine how “valid” or essential their personal views and stories have influence/ relate their readers.
Storytelling has several purposes. Stories teach as generation after generation pass on a bit of culture and tradition. Stories allow people to relate to one another on a personal level and may invoke empathy or sympathy. Stories captivate and tug at people’s heartstrings which is what advertisers are placing their money on. “207 billion U.S. dollars is expected to be spent on ads in 2017.” (1) The narrative paradigm of storytelling is the ideal platform for companies to utilize in order to clinch sales from consumers.
This literature bridging text and context, helped me understand that every author when he writes a story he puts in it details that relate to his life. Behind every story there is a life, the life of the author who wrote it.
Through reading another’s life experiences, you get the rare opportunity to gain honest personal perspectives and learn new things about the world.
The title “ The Story We Tell” is significant because it demonstrates how only some of the stories in history are told and not everyone's. Most of the history being told or written in history books were from the people who had power during that time era, the victor, where the events occurred. In this film, I heard of multiple stories on Native Americans, African Americans and Mexicans who experienced poor treatment by the European settlers, which I never learned about. One of the biggest shock to me was learning about the past president Thomas Jefferson. The film did change the way I thought about some stories and also people.
The power of storytelling can create connections between people and allow individuals to find their inner
We dwell in a world that generates literature, but have you ever considered how idle humankind would be without it? Stories shape our lives and are consistent in every activity one carries out. Whether it is watching T.V., speaking on the phone, or even aiding a customer at work, each encounter a person has consists of some type of storytelling and there is always a unique perspective being told. It has been this way for many, many years. However, as society advances, so do our methods of storytelling. Often, things are circumstantially accepted and seldom do we stop to examine the effects that are brought along. Social advancements contribute a great role in shaping literature and new forms of storytelling. Literature should be explorative
Storytelling is fun and exciting. Sharing stories makes you vulnerable, since you give away part of you, for any story you tell, the way you talk, the way you move, your personality, but also, it makes you strong, because you are in control of your story and choose which one to tell. From telling stories, I learned that the more and varied the audience the harder is to please it, I realized that, during the individual storytelling.
I believe everyone has a story to tell. Sometimes life can take strange turns even more incredible than fiction. There can be poetry in the dullest routine; and because of it, the tiniest break can become an unforgettable event. The lives of the most ordinary people, their pain and joy, suffering and victories, can become the most involving, compelling stories when showed in an artistic light. I want to
After writing those half finished stories with my friends, I realized how much influence stories had on my life. From young ages, people are often exposed to stories, whether they be from bedtime stories, books, teachers, or television. No matter what medium or language, stories can serve to influence a person’s life. As a child, I read an extensive amount of books, and through the years have experienced stories through videogames and TV as well. At some point, I recognized how many things stories had influenced in me.
I was sitting in my room on my bed when all of the sudden my mom called “Come on It’s time to go to your special visit!”, “Ok “ I yelled then raced down the hallway down the soft stairs with carpet on them and to my shoe cubby I quickly tied my shoes and and double knotted them that way they stay on. Then I ran to the car and pulled the door open, then I hopped inside and crawled back to my seat I sat down and put my headphones on this is going to be fun!
