I’ve read a book called “ The A Game” by prof. Kenneth J. Sufka. The book is about steps and advices to get a better grade in college. It is a very useful book to help you to succeed in your college life. The book includes nine rules, such as never sit in the cheap seats, come to class prepared, get spaced out, and go to class always. Also, it shows the bad habits that students usually do and how they can change these habits, so the author called it a game changer. I think rule #1, which is come to class always, is related to me, so I will explain it, give an example, and clarify how the game-changer can affect student. If the student attended the classes from the beginning of the semester, she wouldn’t get in this trouble. The author mentions in each rule a game-changer. It is the ways that can students change their bad habits. It is also the reasons why students should follow the rules in the book. The game-changer for rule number one are two. First of all, there is no substitute for your own lectures notes. Even if students are not good note takers, they should attend the class. Each student attends with his own background information and his own organization style, so he will suffer a lot when he tries to use his friends’ lectures notes. Secondly, each class period is a learning session. Students understand the lecture more if they attend the class even if they are not good at note taking. Also, they will get higher grade because they didn’t miss these learning sessions. If a student missed a whole week of class, that mean he missed three hours of learning sessions. That will affect his grade and his understanding of the course. The author adds that you can only miss classes for three reasons. First, if the student suffers from a disease that could kill him. Second, if the student have to donate a vital organ, e.g. kidney to save another person. Third, if the student wife is giving a birth because wives need their husbands at this time. Review: Throuout the quarter, I have learned that because children learn differently it’s important for us as teachers to make sure that the classroom rules are clear for all children. If there is confusion it’s important for us teachers to explain them so that the children are not confused. Because if the classroom rules are unclear or not communicated enoght to the children they will negect the rules and do what they want. In addition, if the children don’t get discipline at home or don’t have clear established rules at home those children will have a harder time adjusting to having to follow directions more than a child who has a regualr sechedule and clear rules in and outside the home. In Chapter One, his first rule is to “go to class-always” (11). Dr. Sufka is trying to emphasize even if your friend did take notes, they are not what you would have done. As individuals, we all make notes differently, because our brains function diversely. One person may like to just have one full page of notes, which may be fine for them. Meanwhile, their friend likes to add bullets for better symmetry. Overall, Dr. Sufka emphasizes the importance of going to class, and he also notes there are not many excuses that can be made as to why you would not.
If anyone should be setting rules it’s students, teachers need to observe the way students learn and they have to help the students in what they struggle in.
These rules are displayed throughout the school and are referred to continuously by staff and children equally. We also have class rules that have been developed by the children themselves and are a positive device for encouraging good behaviour. The children can then monitor their own behaviour as well as the behaviour of other children in the class.
When a person is on the verge of failing a course, if they catch the failing grade fast enough, there are many things they can change to reach success in the course. The things they make different may have been their downfall to begin with. They could have never studied. While it is great to take good notes in class, what good are the notes if they are never practically used? When discussing ground rules with learners it is important for me as the teacher to establish the rules of the student which may reflect their commitment to the teaching/learning relationship. My own ground rules would incorporate being fully prepared for lessons and ensuring I keep good time for classes to start and finish promptly. I would reciprocate to the students /learners’ commitment to completing assignments by making sure that all marking is completed and returned in equally good time. Further rules to ensure students get the most out of their learning experience encompasses my making sure all have an equal voice when expressing opinions (General Teaching Council, 2009).
In so that “Nobody Has to Go to School If They Don’t Want To”, Roger Sipher argues that if compulsory attendance rules were abolished students who actually wanted to learn in school would receive the education they deserve. In the beginning, Sipher points out that “the decline in standardized test scores is an indicator that American education in in trouble.” He states one reason for the crisis is that “the mandatory attendance laws force many kids to attend school that don’t even wish to be there.” These students have no desire to learn; therefore, they do not get an education and they distract the students who want to learn from doing so. In his view, without compulsory attendance laws public schools would be able to eliminate the students whose behavior is negatively affecting the mission of the educational institute. In addition, Sipher notes that since students know they are going to be passed from grade to grade until they are old enough to drop out, or graduate; they fail to do their homework and receiving low grades does not motivate them to want to learn.
