I read the fantasy novel, Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer. It is a 316 page book with a lexile of 600, published March of 2003. I originally was going to read “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard, but my friend had highly suggested me to read Artemis Fowl, so I read it. But what made me really want to read it was the other version of the covers, which showed a boy who looked very evil and intelligent, and the color scheme of the cover was very appealing to me. Though I did want to read Artemis Fowl, I’m wasn’t really into fantasy at the time, I didn’t even know what the story was about so the genre was not something I was focusing on. I do have a pretty good idea about fantasy through reading many books summaries. Fairies, magic, mythical creatures
Should Everyone Get a Trophy? Most teams have the “Trophies for all” rule, But the question is “Should everyone get a trophy for doing what’s required”? Some experts say giving out trophies to everyone sends out the wrong message even though it encourages kids to keep playing. Although some people feel that trophies lose their meaning if everyone gets one, But other people believe that tropies encourage players to keep playing.

In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, author, Ray Bradbury, uses symbolism to feed the reader with a deeper more insightful meaning of the story by guiding his protagonist and the mindset of the society in which he lives, from a brainwashed technology driven society lacking independent thought, to a human-focused society through the use of the symbols fire and mirrors.
My book is Stung by Bethany Wiggins. The book is about a girl named Fiona who wakes up and has a mark on her wrist showing that she is different, but she’s even more special when she’s the first one who has ever had the cure and never been a beast. But she doesn’t know what is going on. So in the book she goes to figure out who she really is and what has happened in the world. The author uses many things to accomplish things in the story such as, symbols to show what are the major objects in the story that play a role in the story, another thing was flashbacks to give background knowledge to explain what the characters knows and to make them understand, and the last part was description. The description makes the writing more in depth making
I know why the caged bird cannot read, by Francine Prose, is basically her opinionated article in which she tries to show the audience different reasons why the high school students have a lack of interest in reading. This article was definitely showing her ideas and thoughts about books and literature chosen for high school students. When it comes to me, I think that this article in many ways is irrelevant and vague, when she talks about the types of novels or books chosen for high school students. In this era, high school curriculum has some of the best well-crafted and adulated works of writings. Moreover, these masterpieces are written by some of the most adroit writers. We cannot argue about the value of these writings, because these are
In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag is one man attempting to turn his society upside down. After discovering for himself the injustice of his society as it shuns all literature, Montag relentlessly fights to fix this corruption and endures large amounts of persecution in the process (Bradbury). Meanwhile, in his autobiography, Narrative in the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass recounts his past as a single slave doing his best to right the evils of southern slaveholders. Although one takes place in a fantasy and one during 19th century America, both works portray individuals going against the unjust grain of their societies, and persevering through extreme opposition in the process. After escaping the grip of slavery, Douglass recounts his life story to a curious, yet most-likely privileged audience in an intelligent and revealing manner. Throughout his narrative, Douglass praises the surprising resilience of the human spirit even in the midst of constant hardship.
Doughty, A. A. (2013). 'Throw the Book Away': Reading versus Experience in Children's Fantasy. Jefferson, NC: McFarland.
When in the correct audience, books, such as Fahrenheit 451, can utilize their unique perspective as a tool that can help the audience perceive the issues from new perspectives that may have not been considered before. Moreover, as the additional perspectives give the audience new insight about the topic, the audience will also gain the necessary experience that can be applied toward other issues. This
In a well-developed essay, analyze the character of Ruby Jean Sharp, the protagonist of Free As a Bird.
The early decades of the last century saw the loss of credibility of fantasy literature among the academic elite who ruled it a popular genre with little to no scholarly merit. Little that had had the misfortune of being dubbed fantasy had escaped the blacklist cast upon the field. Many critics had also labeled the fantasy genre as largely cliché, full of shallow characters, and as having no value beyond being purely escapist entertainment. These generic labels, applied wholesale to fantastic literature, had pushed it off the
In recent years, a major controversy in the NCAA has been whether or not student athletes in college should be paid for playing sports. There are different viewpoints from different people stating if they should or not. Many people believe that they are already being rewarded enough with their education being paid, but even with the school’s help with their tuition and school fees, many have trouble paying personal expenses. Even though some people believe they shouldn’t be compensated for their hard work and dedication, it is the right thing to do, due to their lack of time occupied by sports and schoolwork. Many famous athletes in college such as Johnny Manziel and Tim Tebow bring in millions of dollars into their universities due to
Many old books compose the classical literature, which still influence nowadays writers. Many people work studying books from classical literature and school also teach students how to interpret the classics. Some of the appreciated books are Don Quixote, The Odyssey, Animal Farm, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, The Hobbit and many others. When reading Don Quixote and The Odyssey, the reader notice that the books have many similarities developed throughout the stories, such as fighting for love, fighting monsters and being structured in non-linear plot; however, as the stories are developed, specific detail shows how one story differs from the other.
There is no doubt that certain books children read are made especially for boys or for girls. Like any developmental form of entertainment, from toys to movies, children's books are often littered with hints that dictate whether they were originally meant for male or female enjoyment. Sometimes these hints can be as simple as the specific gender of the main characters, for example Carolyn Keene's Nancy Drew series calls for a female audience while the extremely similar yet sexually opposite Hardy Boys mysteries fall into the hands of boys, yet other times more important factors decide who the book will best be suited for. Gary Paulsen's Hatchet and Katherine Patersons's The Great Gilly Hopkins are books for a boy and a
Different types of texts require different approaches. When I’m picking out a new book to read for pleasure, I like to read the description on the back or in the front cover. It gives me an idea of what the book is going to be about and whether or not I’ll be interested in it. If the description
In the past couple years, there has been a growing phenomenon in the world of children's literature, this phenomenon is Harry Potter. J.K. Rowlings series of novels about a young wizard and his years at "Hogwarts School of Wizarding and Witchcraft," has become one of the most successful children's book series of all time. Before reading any of the now four novels, one may find it hard to believe that a children's novel may be so entertaining. But once one starts reading any of the four books, it is plain to see why these books are so popular.
