How much longer will it take until our leaders take a stand to stop it? Since 2013 there have been 268 school shootings in the United States alone (Everytown for Gun Safety, 2017). School gun violence is becoming increasingly probable. It is imperative that our government and our citizens come together to create a solution and implement a plan to prevent and stop the occurrence of school gun violence. The solution, for some, is to bring more guns into the picture by arming teachers, principals, and other school officials, or place armed police officers at school sites (LaPierre, 2015). For others, the solution is to make even stricter laws regarding gun use or to get rid of these weapons altogether. These certainly are drastic options; I must say that I do believe the true solution is to increase the focus on mental health services and by extension, mental health awareness. There is simply not enough focus on the mental health of our youth and of our students. Mental health services are the most important step to making schools safer, because this solution touches the entire problem of violence at its root level.

School shootings, gang violence, drive by shootings, murder, and thousands of acts of violence are committed every day. Members of our society criticize their own people for this violence while they continue to sit back and do nothing about it. These acts of violence have many contributing factors. Violence in our country today is escalating because we don't control the distribution of the guns sold. There are not enough restrictions on guns sold legally. The illegal purchase of guns through the black market is out of control. There is not enough education on the usage and storage of guns.

Do you feel Gun violence has taken a bad effect on taxpayers? I do, because even if your family member hasn’t been shot or killed, it still hurt you in a way. When a person has been killed in a certain state, and the killer is a part of that state. The state happens to give away four Thousand dollars to help cover the funeral costs. If you didn’t know, that’s coming from our taxes. When a person have been shot and wounded, your taxes are being taking and helping paying for medication to keep that person out of pain. Even when the killer gets caught, your taxes will be still be a risk, because killers has to eat too.

In the past many schools have been victims of gun violence. Shootings, among other violent things are by far the most devastating. A few good ways to prevent gun violence, and violence in general, are timed locks throughout the school, metal detectors on the doors, gun safety programs at home and school, and more devices and policies to monitor students whereabouts. I; however, believe that the best way to prevent school violence, without violating the student’s privacy, is to install timed locks and metal detectors throughout the entire school.

The right as an American to own a firearm has always been apart of our history. However, recent events have put into the question the second amendment and whether or not it still holds any real purpose in our society. Gun violence has constantly occurred throughout our history and has always been a problem to end. On Friday, October 24th, things appeared normal, and in an instant, they changed. During the busy lunch hour, Jaylen Fryberg opened fire on his classmates, resulting in the death of one student, and the wounding of four others. After his actions, he committed suicide. His description fits into the template of a typical good kid - prince of his homecoming court, a volunteer in his community, an athlete. A good kid, yes, yet a good kid that decided to perform a mass shooting. After the incident, the hundreds of published articles discussed the underlying mental health problems that Fryberg apparently had, and blamed them for his act. However, little evidence links the two, since ninety six percent of gun violence have no connection to someone mentally ill. When gun violence occurs, mental illness should not serve as the main reason behind it.

Over the last years gun control has become a very widely debated topic. The city, county and state lawmakers seem to be having different stands about the public having easy access to guns. Adam Small states, “After centuries of relative obscurity, the Second Amendment has become the center of an intense academic and legal battle during the last twenty years” (1213). The supporters of gun control and its opponents both claim to have the best interest of this country’s citizens .However, there are private citizens who believe that there should be laws to limit the number of people who own a gun. People all across the world are debating about whether to require the start of reducing gun violence. Guns have always been a part of American culture, even before we became the America we know today. In colonial times and the days of the Wild West, guns were an essential part of survival. They were needed to kill animals for food and to protect against unwanted trespassers and predators. However, in these modern times, because we have conveniences such as Hannaford and organized police systems, guns have gone from tools of necessity to novelty toys. In 2015, 13,367 people lost their lives due to gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. The Archive also states that out of that number, 693 were children from ages 0-11. We can all agree that there is indeed a problem that we have to address. The solution to that problem, however, has been debated by many. I believe the solution to this problem exists in three parts: Mandatory training and licensing along with more heavily secure gun storage, stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm—disabilities and criminal records should be more deeply looked into before transaction—and finally, equipping teachers at highs schools with the right kind of weaponry to prevent mass shootings.

It is the year of 2017 almost 2018 and we have come a long way. Our nation is growing as one and sticking together the fight the hatred in the United States. Our American History was not so great. Several wars, violence, and attacks. Now today, while united as one, we have hope for the future of this nation.

In the African American community, 83 percent of homicides are due to gun violence. In black communities gun violence is commonly misunderstood as gang affiliation, which is false. Studies show over 50 percent of gun crimes committed were not related to a felony, but were due to some disagreement. The gun epidemic in predominantly black communities aren’t just disagreements, but race wars, police brutality, gang related, and even no reason at all.

Because of easy access to get a gun, gun violence has become an increasing problem in the southern states in America, so I plan to improve this issue by influencing my peers via sharing my thoughts, and advocating for stronger background checks when trying to purchase firearms and gun-related equipment.The plan is to bring the attention of this issue to adults who are capable of taking my ideas further to make a difference. Once there is a large group of supports, the importance of strengthening gun background checks will become evident. The targeted group to focus on for this situation are parents, teenagers (those allowed to vote, like seniors), and other people who could influence the government. Everyday 93 Americans are killed by guns. Whether it is due to homicide or suicide, it does not matter. At the end of the day gun violence is increasing exponentially. In numerous states, gun laws have been placed in the hopes of reducing gun violence. But now many people believe that gun violence should be treated as a public health problem. I for one feel that gun violence should be put in the category of public health. Every year more than 30,000 people are victims to gun related incidents. It has become such an issue that gun violence is causing more deaths than some life threatening diseases.
