A criminal justice system has been in place since the dawn of time, from the hue and cry era of policing to the advancement of the system there have been many laws, models, and theories set into place to protect the citizens but also to provide law enforcement officers with power to carry out their duties. A communities interest in the criminal justice system is to prevent and stop crime with law enforcements assistance. This paper will provide an overlook of how concepts from the criminal justice system are applicable in everyday activities.

Criminal justice practitioners are necessary for a civilized society. Without those who form boundaries to our freedom, and the ones that reinforce those laws, our community would be chaos. Some of the main social issues our society faces are drug abuse, gang violence, child abuse, and terrorism. The criminal justice practitioners face these types of issues daily. These professionals must act on the morals and laws stated by society rather than their own opinions, sometimes facing hard decisions. The criminal justice field is always active and busy, dealing with countless amount of criminal activity throughout the country.

In every community there is an element of crime. During my time as a Law Enforcement Officer, I had a front row seat to see the intricate and often violent interactions between the two. There were still many aspects I did not have a full grasp on. During my time in this class, I gained a more complete understanding of how the judicial and incarceration process worked. In this paper I will discuss what I found enlightening about the course materials. I will also discuss the information I gain from the guest speakers. Lastly I will make my recommendations for the class in the future.

As we all know – there are tons of social issues within the entire world that Criminal Justice Practitioners deal with, most likely, on a daily basis. One of the many social issues I’ve chosen is Prison Overcrowding.

This weeks reading covered several areas first What is Criminal Justice, next The Crime Picture, and finally The Search for Causes. All three of these sections focused on crime and its impact in America. Setting the tone for the remainder of this course and building the initial foundation for the basic thought process and understanding in criminal justice. The first chapter What is Criminal Justice starts with crime in America and describes it as an ebb and flow as if coming in waves.

The criminal justice system is tasked with the duality of balancing individual rights and public safety. The objectives of the criminal justice system include protection, justice, and a social responsibility. Past experiences have an impact upon the paths that are taken in life. Often, people search for meaning in life or for a calling. The majority of people have had an event prompt their calling in life (Loehlein, McKenna, Robie, Austin, & Ecker, 2015, p. 20).

Police, courts and corrections are part of criminal justice organizations. Each of these organizations face challenges every day and the leaders of these agencies must deal with these challenges (Duelin, 2010). The types of criminal justice leaders range from police chiefs and sheriffs to prison superintendents, and heads of government, state, or local task forces. Some of the challenges they confront are budget and staffing shortfalls, political perspectives on the roles of law enforcement personnel in society, and the changing nature of crime and the difficulties associated with keeping up with these trends (Bryant, 2010).

I believe that Criminal justice institution; it has a weak social control system for our safety, because they are some officers that abuse of their power against the civilians. This affect or impact our society in a large distance in a way that social control system don’t have a strong system to protect use as a United States citizen from some officers that don’t do their job in the right way.

This summary is dedicated to the response to crime by the criminal justice system. The police are the first to respond to crime, and in many cases “society’s last line of defense”, (Bohm & Haley, 2011, p 8). The police seldom involve themselves in peccadilloes, that is, infractions committed by a person that can be handled by the family, school, or possibly the church. Should these infractions become misdemeanors or felonies, then inevitably there will be police involvement. Sometimes cases are easily solved, while others require further investigation. Investigation into some cases may take days, weeks, months, and even years. Once the suspect is arrested and charged with a crime(s), the next process will be the court system.

Society relies on the criminal justice system to maintain order within communities and to maintain a safe environment for community members. Society expects the criminal justice system to provide justice by separating the guilty from the innocent, to incapacitate dangerous individuals, to promote deterrence to law-breaking individuals, and to rehabilitate offenders. An important expectation of the criminal justice system is to provide fair and just consequences to criminal offenders and assist the offenders with reintegrating into society.
