This weeks reading covered several areas first What is Criminal Justice, next The Crime Picture, and finally The Search for Causes. All three of these sections focused on crime and its impact in America. Setting the tone for the remainder of this course and building the initial foundation for the basic thought process and understanding in criminal justice.
The first chapter What is Criminal Justice starts with crime in America and describes it as an ebb and flow as if coming in waves. When I initially thought about crime in America I really only thought back to the prohibition era when there were gangsters trying to get alcohol into the country as well as bank robberies. Another time that stands out to me is the large influx of drugs into the United States during the 1980’s. Now in the late 2010’s it seems the criminals have moved from land into the cyber realm and there are many unknowns which I will get to later. One shift that has happened with crime in America is the Social Media aspect with a wider dissemination of information faster and further reaching.

In his book, Criminal Justice Today: An Introductory Text For The 21th Century, author Frank Schmalleger inform us that two social realities coexist in prison setting; the first, being the official structure of rules and procedures put in place by the wider society and enforced by prison staff, the second, being the more informal and intimate world of the inmate, namely the prison subculture (Schmalleger, 2001). Prison subculture, in its broad sense, refers to the customs, beliefs, attitudes, values and lifestyles of prison inmates (Dugger, 2017). Here, inmates develop their own myths, slang, customs, rewards, and sanctions; with their own values, roles, language and leadership structure (Clear, Cole, Petrosino, Reisig, 2015).
In chapters six through ten of The Collapse of American Criminal Justice, Stuntz talks about the changes that were being made in the criminal justice system, and the changes that can help fix the system. He goes in details when it comes changes in the system, from the courts putting limits on what the criminal procedure, for example, the “exclusionary rule”. Also the mention of the rise and fall of crime across the United States. Lastly, mentioning the famous landmark cases that helped sparked these changes.
Chapter one also discusses the importance of the need to have a system of justice in America. Crime was thought to have been previously been linked with poverty, however, this is not the case. The President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice was a group of 19 people appointed by former president Lyndon B. Johnson in order to study the criminal justice system in America. The Challenge of Crime in a Free Society is a report that summarized objectives that shaped the criminal justice system. The chapter also focusses on the models of criminal justice. The Due Process Model, associated mainly with the Warren Court, is a model that wants citizens to have equal fairness of the law. The Crime Control Model, however, suggests that the most important function is the suppression of crime. Overall, the main purpose of chapter one is to inform readers as to why the criminal justice system was created and the need for a justice system in

The U.S. criminal justice system is made up of different but equally important divisions to ensure proper criminal justice functions are performed. This system is broken up into three different segments: law enforcement, the courts, and corrections These segments work together to enforce justice to all when a crime has been committed (Schmalleger, 2013).
Specific characteristics that interlink these three agencies are discretion, resource dependence, sequential tasks, and filtering (Cole, 2008). All phases of the justice system reflect the freedom to make a decision according to the own judgment of the agent that is working with a case at the moment. The abuse of discretion leads to the most notable issue that affects the accuracy and effectiveness of the system, discrimination. Even thought discretion is one of the most important characteristic of the system because the American criminal justice does not have the tools to treat each individual case the same way, on the other hand the system can’t afford to have every single case leading to an investigation. American criminal justice to be effective needs accuracy due to the resource dependence of each agency has on another. Every decision made between all these agencies is sequential. To have a case seen in court, an arrest has to be made by a police officer, then and prosecutors and judges have the responsibility of adjudication, then correction implement the punishment according to the prior decisions makers. When discussing the process of implementing the law, the filtering process is very important; this is process in which cases are screened by law enforcement officials and the decision to handle it at the current level is made or the case is passed on to the next level. As you can see, all agencies are linked together and in theory should work
