We have all heard the infamous story of Rapunzel, the beautiful princess with long, flowing locks of hair that could extend down to the bottom of her tower from which she was forbidden to ever leave, and how the prince came to her, asked her to let down her hair, and he climbed up to her and saved her. However, this story is not entirely true; the Brother's Grimm modified the story slightly to save the poor prince some embarrassment. He was not the most intelligent gent--he deemed climbing up a tower via hair to be rational! (Perhaps he already had damage to his frontal lobes . . . ). Regardless, as he climbed up the golden locks, he became distracted by a bluebird and let go with one hand to reach out and touch it. Though Rapunzel warned him,
On Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at about while present at group 31 office, I reviewed the CCRB interview of Sgt. Joseph Grimm as it pertains to the above allegation of missing property. Sgt. Grimm stated the following;
In “Rapunzel,” the now blind prince miserably wanders the wilderness for years before happening upon the sound of Rapunzel’s voice. The prince follows the voice and finds Rapunzel, who has given birth to twins. When Rapunzel recognizes him, she embraces the prince. Rapunzel’s tears fall into the prince’s eyes, and he is able to see again. In Tangled, Rapunzel powerlessly watches Flynn die after he cuts her hair. She sobs while holding his dead body. The magic in Rapunzel’s hair remains in her tears, and when her tears hit Flynn’s body they heal him. He is brought back to life, and the two return to Corona, where Rapunzel is reunited with her family and she and Flynn get married and live happily ever after.
Sometimes one's rationality can be engulfed by rage, causing them to do unspeakable things. This situation can be found in the book The Sisters Grimm: The Council of Mirrors by Michael Buckley. In the book, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm are prophesied to save the world from an evil magic mirror. Although saving the world could only be achieved in creating a coven of the most powerful witches and leading an army of misfits into combat, the Grimm sisters' grandmother is possessed by Mirror, preventing them from killing him. Despite the tension and exhilaration in the story, an individual that reads the book may desire their life to me more like the character's.
Attention Getting Sentence: One of the most ancient and prominent character archetypes across literature and film, is the Trickster.
Through the many years the Grimm brothers were alive, an array of children's literature was produced. Actually, the correct term would be reproduced. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were masters at reproducing and even changing early children's stories so that they had more meaning for the children of the time. More times than not, they censored out sexual meanings and added violence to children's stories that had already been told for centuries. By doing so, the brothers got an effect out of the story that would change it from a story with a subtle theme or moral, to a vivid story of lessons to be learned and consequences to be dealt with. There was one thing about their' writing that was always
Everyone must go through different challenges and transformations in order to reach their full potential. In fairy tales, physical transformations are not uncommon: a pig turning into a handsome prince or a frog turning into a beautiful woman. However, in some tales, the physical transformation has nothing to do with a spell or curse. In these stories, physical transformation can be seen as representative of the psychological transformation the character is experiencing. The characters diminish themselves, becoming something other than human, to discover who they really are. The psychological changes they experience can be described by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This pyramid shows the progression by which individuals become self-actualized, or reach their full potential (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs). By transforming into an animal, like a sparrow in both Lin Lan Cinderella and the Grimm Brothers’ Juniper Tree, the characters are able to further move up the hierarchy, so that eventually they can return to their human form. In Lin Lan’s Cinderella, a girl named Beauty transforms a number of times on her path to self-actualization. She goes from a meek girl, to a woman standing up for her rightful place. By diminishing herself, she is able to more fully understand who she wants to become. She is able to move up Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs by taking ownership of her own life.
Children are led to believe that Hansel and Gretel, in the fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel” by the Grimm brothers, are the protagonists or “the good guys” of the story. Bettelheim believes that in fairy tales all characters are either good or bad and that they are not ambiguous. To be ambiguous is to have a double meaning or to be unclear about decisions that are made. After examining Hansel and Gretel’s actions more thoroughly it is discovered that there is ambiguity in the choices they make, therefore rejecting Bettelheim’s previous claim on how fairy tale characters are never ambiguous. Initially, I agreed with Bettelheim’s statement on non ambiguous fairy tale characters because in the beginning they were merely victims of the antagonist’s decisions, but then I started noticing Hansel and Gretel’s counteractions and how it did not comply under the category of “good” or benign. Although Hansel and Gretel may appear to be “good” in the eyes of the children, Hansel and Gretel’s ambiguous actions have led me to believe otherwise.
Although there are many versions of virtually every fairy-tale known to man, not all of the different adaptations are contrasting. The bases of stories tend to remain the same, due to the fact that the main plots are unvarying. Throughout history, these famous fairytales have been passed on by word of mouth. The two most well-known authors who wrote their interpretations of fairy-tales are French author Charles Perrault (1628-1703), and The Brothers Grimm / Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859). Although Perrault wrote down his thoughts much earlier than the Grimm Brothers, the brothers appear to have gained more credit and fame from their works. One of the darkest and most intriguing work of theirs is the story of Bluebeard. The
He discovered that shouting some specific words the sorceress climbed through a blond braid up to the tower’s top. The prince tried the same words; he was so impressed by Rapunzel’s beauty that he proposed marriage to her. Then, they devised an escape plan, but Rapunzel naively told the sorceress her intentions. Frau Gothel set a trap to the prince and caught him after he climbed the tower. He was so desperate when he didn’t see Rapunzel that he threw himself out the window, where some thorns left him blind. Years passed and while the prince wandered through the woods, he heard the voice of his beloved Rapunzel again. As she cried in his arms, her tears bathed his eyes with love, allowing him to see again. Finally, they returned to his kingdom and lived with their children happily ever
I chose to research the genre of fairy tales, specifically the ones written and told by the Grimm brothers. Fairy tales took shape in sixteenth century Italy as literature for adults. They are known to be children’s stories about magical and imaginary beings in wonderful lands. They can also be described as a fabricated story, especially one intended to deceive the mind. It typically features European fantasy characters. The characters may be distinguished from other folk tales such as legends. They can also be found in oral and literary forms. The term is also used to describe something happy, also known as a “fairy tale ending”. The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace.
Most people cannot imagine coveted childhood fairytale with pure sadistic characters, blood, death and neglect. Disney motion pictures have depicted their classic fairytales by painting picture of princess with a loving parent, a dead parent, and a wonderful outlook on life with just the hope of dreams coming true. Many people cannot fathom the idea of a beloved fairytale containing the dark acts of rape, torture, and cannibalism. After all, Snow White’s apple was just meant to put her to sleep; and Sleeping Beauty did find her prince right? Wrong. In the original Grimm Fairytales Snow Whites apple was meant to kill her for good and Sleeping Beauty’s prince was
Fairytales or imaginary stories were and are still told to children before they go to bed. In these stories, there were kings and queens that lived in kingdoms. With the king and queen, there would be a beautiful princess. The story will sometimes have an evil force that would cause terror in the kingdom. The evil force could be a number of things. An example of an evil figures can be a witch, warlock, troll, dwarf, stepfamilies, and even animals. Along with the evil figure, there are heroes that would save the day. The heroes were sometimes knights, princes, or sometimes even peasants. The hero would go up against any task that the evil figure throws at him. There would be some points in story where the hero feels like giving up and then
Jakob Grimm the older brother was born on January 4, 1785 and his younger brother Wilhelm Grimm was born February 24, 1786 both of them were born in Hanau Germany and were both the oldest surviving children out of 6 including them from Dorothea and Philip Grimm. As young kids they spent most of their time together beside from spending a long period of time apart they were together for the rest of their lives. Their low temper made it easy to cooperate and work together on projects. The primary difference between the two brothers was that Jakob the healthier had more of a drive for research and ihe was the one who worked on most of their theories of grammar and language. Wilhelm was physically weaker but he was a warmer
Fairy tales, they are my favorite type of stories. I know they have a moral lesson, I also know the tales contain some source of magic or mythical creatures. Fairy tales are known for their happy endings as well. My experiences with these tales were mainly associated around the friendlier, modern versions. As I began to notice that these modern tales were too happy for me, I came across a book with work from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. I immediately fell in love with their style of Fairy Tales, so I began to read those tales. I lost interest in the modern, happier tales. I honestly think their twisted tales should replace all of the modern tales this generation has grown up on.
The Grimm brothers lived in a factioned Germany with many different cultures that were struggling to connect with one another. In attempts to help unify Germany the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, traveled throughout the country; listening, collecting, and writing down oral stories and fables from various regions in Germany. They believed that preserving oral culture and stories from various places in Germany would nationalize Germany by having a collective culture rather than many different cultures. With seven total editions and a dictionary, preserving culture and unifying Germany was their life goal. Writing down these oral stories and collecting them assisted in the formation of Germany as a nation rather than multiple different imagined communities. Most nations have a shared common culture and an official language. The Grimm brothers helped usher in an age of oneness in Germany and in doing so, Germany became a more unified nation.
