Romeo and Juliet definitely believed that they were ready for much more than they were capable of handling. Now knowing when teen’s minds actually are developed we can see why Juliet made so many poor mistakes. One example of a poor choice by Juliet was actually agreeing to go along with the plan that Friar Lawrence concocted. ( Act 4. Scene 3. Line 58.) Another piece of evidence of being blind to love is when she falls for a young man, Romeo, that she has known for like a short amount of time. ( Act 1. Scene 5. Line 108.) The fact that Romeo’s brain was underdeveloped could show us why he was drawn to such a younger girl. Juliet acts like the 13-14-year-old she is presented as towards the beginning of the book. Juliet firstly is shown as being immature when her father tells Count Paris that Juliet is too young to be married and to wait till she is 14. It shows this in the passage, “ My child is yet a stranger in the world, she hath not seen the charge of fourteen years.” This sets the tone of the book for Juliet and how she will not be maturing throughout the novel. Juliet threatens death a lot in the novel, the first time she mentions death is when she is talking about marrying Count Paris, this scares the Nurse, her father, and mother making them upset that she will actually proceed in doing this.
These themes were represented by Romeo and Juliet’s devastating suicide, Mercutio’s unjust murder, and Romeo’s banishment from Verona. Romeo had just loved another girl, Rosaline, only moments before seeing Juliet and deciding that he had loved her instantly. According to the article, “Love at first sight is a phenomenon that 15% of people have reported experiencing it. They described it as a once in a lifetime situation.” It seems impossible that Romeo had experienced this with two girls within a few days. As for Juliet, she is only 13 years old. Many studies have found that children can not love somebody romantically until they have hit puberty. She shows her immaturity towards the beginning of the book, when the nurse is speaking to her and she gets extremely embarrassed. While she does mature throughout the play, her maturity level at when she first met Romeo was no where near where it would have to be to fall inlove.
