Are humans naturally good or evil? In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, the idea that humanity is inherently evil is demonstrated through the characters’ treatment of each other. Likewise, the isolated example of the inherent evil nature displayed by stranded children on the island has played out in real human history over last 50 years. In the novel and in the past, the main source of evil is mankind’s egotistical nature, which is manifested through selfishness, cruelty, and disregard for the feelings of others.
The egotistical nature of humans is depicted in some characters, such as Jack. After Jack breaks away from the group, he yells at Piggy, telling him, “the conch doesn't count on top of the mountain, so you shut up” (Golding 42). Jack indirectly informs Piggy that he never says anything useful, and therefore, the

One example includes Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old, who claimed, “‘all of those beautiful girls I've desired so much in my life [and those men who had luck with women], … I will destroy’” (Yan). Elliot Rodger, a student at University of California Santa Barbara, killed several college students, since he was never able to get a girlfriend. His selfish actions, along with the immorality of human nature, made him kill 6 innocent people and injure 14 others. Another example includes Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old who “was motivated partly by self-hatred or repressed sexuality has been used to divert attention from the problem of Islamic extremism” (Brinkmann). Omar Mateen killed 9 people and wounded 53 others in Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. His self-hatred and belief in the Islamic fundamentalism antipathy towards gay people led him to selfishly commit this mass murder. Both Elliot Rodger and Omar Mateen further prove the point that humans are essentially evil through their immoral
‘You let me speak!,’ ‘The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,’ said Jack, ‘So you shut up.’ ” (Golding, 42). Although Piggy is holding the conch, he is shut up by Jack because even with the conch he doesn’t have any power or respect from everyone else. Which shows who really maintains since no one tries to defend Piggy or stop Jack. After the conch is taken from Piggy, Ralph starts to declare, “ ‘And another thing.
He often compares Piggy to pigs and tells everyone how irrelevant and silly he is. When Piggy gets the conch and tells how he has a right to speak just like everyone, Jack shuts him up with rude comments about his intelligence and appearance. As a result, he punches Piggy leading to the fall and break of his glasses. ‘You would, would you? Fatty! … He went crouching and feeling over the rocks but Simon, who got there first, found them for him. Passions beat about Simon on the mountaintop with awful wings.” [Page: 75] Jack snatches the conch from Piggy and starts to talk about his own ideas and opinions to the assembly. When Piggy finds Ralph alone, he explains how he thinks Jack doesn’t like him. He says how he spends most of his time thinking about it. As Jack respects Ralph and his ideas as a chief, he won’t hurt him. They also understand each other and appreciate their ideas and help. However, certain times, Jack hates Ralph too when he listens to Piggy’s ideas and try to follow according to it. Once if Ralph is out of Jack’s way, the next person he will want to kill is Piggy. “He [Jack] hates me. I dunno why. If he could do what he wanted-you’re all right, he respects you. Besides-you’d hit him…. ‘I been in bed so much I
The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding questions individuals whether humans are naturally good or evil. Throughout the novel, there are certain events and people that show humans are good. Not only is it shown in books but in real life too. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great example of this because what he did changed millions of lives and not in a bad way. As of the book, there are two characters that support the idea of humans being good. One of them is Simon and the other is Samneric. These two characters in Lord of the Flies help shape the answer of this question because the island never changed them. Humans have the choice of whether they want to turn evil or remain good. As seen by Simon and Samneric in Lord of the Flies by William
‘The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,’ said Jack, ‘so you shut up’” (39). Revealing that Piggy tries to assert his ideas into the conversation but gets shot down by the others, this quote also shows that he is not respected by the group. Although he is not respected or heard, he comes up with some of the best ideas on the island that will help them survive. Piggy is rational. “We can use this to call the others.

Humans have empathy and some kind of loyalty to another, and this can be seen through Boxer in Animal Farm as well as Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird. Golding in Lord of the Flies portrays that humanity is naturally
What will people do when they are under circumstances that pressure them into doing something that is life threatening, will they go crazy and turn evil or will they stay the same and not turn evil. Humans Inherently Good or Evil Humans, naturally good or evil? I really want to say humans are inherently good but, I think their is too much evidence that humans are inherently evil in the book Lord Of The Flies. I chose inherently evil because Jack’s actions as a leader, the actions of Jack and his tribe, and the little evidence of humans being inherently good. Humans, being inherently evil in the book Lord Of The Flies.
Whenever Piggy wishes to say, express some of his thoughts on something or ever provide his opinion on anything, Jack tells him to shut up. Some of his actions represent evil and violence, and because of his ‘rebellious’ personality, this makes him a really brutal leader with an unfair way of leading. It's like the boys can't have a say in anything, Jack makes all the decisions.

Is man basically good or just pure evil? There are two sides of this argument, one being that all man is good or all man is evil. Throughout the story, man goes from good and has order to really evil with a lot of chaos. When the boys get to the island, they feel the need to make rules to prevent chaos.
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is tale of a group of young boys who become stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes. Intertwined in this classic novel are many themes, most that relate to the inherent evil that exists in all human beings and the malicious nature of mankind. In The Lord of the Flies, Golding shows the boys' gradual transformation from being civilized, well-mannered people to savage, ritualistic beasts.
Despite the progression of civilization and society's attempts to suppress man's darker side, moral depravity proves both indestructible and inescapable; contrary to culturally embraced views of humanistic tendencies towards goodness, each individual is susceptible to his base, innate instincts. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, seemingly innocent schoolboys evolve into bloodthirsty savages as the latent evil within them emerges. Their regression into savagery is ironically paralleled by an intensifying fear of evil, and it culminates in several brutal slays as well as a frenzied manhunt. The graphic consequence of the boys' unrestrained barbarity, emphasized by the
